From the Head’s Desk

There is no doubt that adaptability, flexibility, patience, navigating uncharted territory, resiliency, problem solving, and creative thinking have taken on new meanings in the past 2-3 years during the pandemic when we all had to adjust to very different lifestyles and circumstances. Our day-to-day lives were certainly thrown for a serious loop, to say the least.

In this issue of the Phoenix, we profile alumna Maya Liebman ’84 who has seen and managed her share of global crises and daunting challenges working for American Airlines. She argues convincingly that maybe rather than Charles Darwin’s “Survival of the Fittest,” a more appropriate concept might be “Survival of the Most Adaptable.” Maya certainly illustrates that resiliency and adaptability equate to having the ability to succeed even when a playbook has not yet been created.

In the article, you’ll read about how Maya has been able to help American Airlines overcome some of the most unthinkable and, initially, entirely impossible curve balls thrown their way. Not only has she demonstrated tremendous agility and leadership in crisis management, but has also helped reinvent, reshape, and reimagine aspects of the airline industry, shifting and changing focus, embracing new challenges, and identifying solutions.

In a constantly evolving and changing landscape, adapting, gaining breadth of experience, and embracing growth opportunities rather than letting your inner critic tell you, “This is too hard, I cannot do it” are essential. As Maya points out, we must nurture and bring to the surface our inner champion and not second guess ourselves.

Maya’s initial foundation of strong communication through literature and writing, speaking up, exploring the world, immersing herself in the arts, developing a growth mindset, and problem solving was laid and cultivated right here at Park Tudor. These skills and frame of mind were then further developed over time through education, experience, and the courage to take on increasing responsibility and new leadership roles.

While much has changed at Park Tudor since Maya was a student, the fundamental skills that our students develop have not. The lessons of resilience and adaptability are learned in the classroom, on the field, on the stage, and across the campus. Recently, our girls and boys soccer teams brought home State Champions thanks in no small part to their hard work, persistence, and “can do” attitudes. Two of our varsity football team members played key roles in the opening night of our fall play at 5:00 p.m., and then hit the field for kick-off of the Sectional Championship game at 7:30. Talk about adaptability.

The seeds to taking flight, spreading your wings, thriving for excellence, and being part of something larger than yourself continue to be planted right here at Park Tudor. Our students take risks, speak up, and engage themselves fully as scholars, athletes, artists, and ethical and caring citizens. Our current students and young alumni have been forced to be resilient, adaptable, flexible, and embrace the shifting landscape multiple times. Although the journey has not been easy, I know our alumni will continue to find their own unique spheres in which they will make positive differences contributing to the larger good for all.

Sincerely,

Dear Park Tudor Community,
FROM THE HEAD’S DESK

News of the School

Chris Front to be Park Tudor’s Next Head of School

The Search Committee and Park Tudor Board of Directors are pleased to announce Chris Front as Park Tudor’s next Head of School beginning July 1, 2023.

Chris is an exceptional educator with incredible leadership experience cultivated at a premiere midwestern independent school. Chris is currently Assistant Head of School at John Burroughs School in St. Louis. Burroughs is one of the top independent schools in the Midwest and has earned a stellar national reputation.

"While I was originally drawn to this opportunity by Park Tudor’s impressive academic reputation, it was during my visit to campus earlier this month that I knew this was the school community I wanted to join and lead,” said Chris. “As I met with teachers, parents, staff, trustees, and administrators, their passion for and commitment to Park Tudor was palpable. But it was my time with students—who spoke so enthusiastically about the deep and meaningful connections they have with their teachers, advisors, and coaches—that made clear to me that Park Tudor shares my deeply held belief that students grow intellectually and thrive personally when they feel known, supported, and valued. I am thrilled and honored to lead Park Tudor in its next chapter, as together we build upon its history of excellence."

Burroughs’ current Head of School attributes much of their success to his collaboration with Chris over the years. Throughout the interview process and in discussions with various references, Chris’s care for students, focus on academic excellence, intellect, empathy, and unique ability to lead came through loud and clear. Chris is a beloved educator and leader.

Park Tudor Board of Directors Vice President, Andrea Hailey, will lead the Head of School Transition Team to support Chris in his new role. Additionally, Andrea will update the community on opportunities to learn more about and engage with Chris as his start date approaches.

“As Vice President of the Board and leader of the Transition Team, I’m excited to work closely with Chris, whose leadership, experience, and students-first approach will unite all of us who are deeply invested in Park Tudor’s success," said Andrea. "I’m looking forward to welcoming him and continuing our important work of preparing our students to be lifelong learners.”

Upper School Students Perform The Play That Goes Wrong

Upper School students took to the stage November 4-6, mounting a hilarious production of The Play That Goes Wrong

In The Play That Goes Wrong, “break a leg!” takes on a whole new meaning for a woefully misguided troupe of players at the Cornley University Society’s opening night performance of The Murder at Haversham Manor. An unconscious leading lady, a corpse who can’t play dead, a ruffled detective, and a wordmangling butler (among others) must battle against technical gaffes, forgotten lines, and sabotaging scenery in a quest to arrive all in one piece at the final curtain call.

Sold-out crowds were delighted to the play that has been dubbed “part Monty Python, part Sherlock Holmes, all mayhem.”

Upper School Partners with Heartland Film for Janet Flanner Visiting Artist Series

The Park Tudor Janet Flanner Visiting Artist Series is a vital component of connecting classroom, campus and community. The series is designed to provide students with exposure to working artists from a wide array of disciplines. This year marks the seventh year of our partnership with Heartland Film as we host screenings and a talk with filmmakers; past filmmakers in the program have included Tim Taylor, Milan Chakraborthy, Ted Green and Annie O’Neil.

On Friday, October 14 the senior class traveled to the Toby Theater at Newfields to screen a series of films created by teens from around the world who entered their work into the High School Film Competition in the Indy Shorts Film Festival this past summer. Freshmen, sophomores and juniors screened the documentary A Decent Home and met the filmmaker, Sara Terry.

A Decent Home examines urgent issues of inequity and affordable housing through the stories of the residents of Denver Meadows as well as residents of other mobile home parks across the country. Mobile homes have traditionally been the country’s biggest source of affordable housing. Some 20 million Americans live in manufactured homes, yet there is a stigma and stereotype of living in a mobile home community. Most mobile home park residents own their houses and rent the land underneath. In recent years, the affordability of mobile homes has been threatened with doubling or even tripling of rents across the country with the rise of corporate and private equity ownership of these parks.

We are grateful for the partnership with Heartland Film and the opportunity to expose students to the power of filmmaking and the way in which documentaries bring important topics to the table in a captivating way that sparks conversation. Our students have been invited to think critically about what community means to them, how they define home, and what is meant by the terms wealth gap and housing inequity.

Eighth Grade Boat Race Returns

The popular annual tradition of the 8th Grade Boat Race returned on September 2. In this 8th grade science projects, students form teams to solicit sponsors and build boats out of cardboard with the goal of paddling the length of the pool at the JCC. Congratulations to this year’s winning team, Poseidon’s Disciples.

PT Welcomes Students from Uruguay

Park Tudor was pleased to once again welcome students from the Scuola Italiana di Montevideo in Uruguay. The group spent a week at Park Tudor in September attending classes and visiting various sites in Indianapolis. In early November, a group of Park Tudor students headed to Uruguay as part of the same exchange program.

Remembering Bill Main

Retired Lower School Director, Bill Main, passed away on August 1, 2022. Bill spent the first 20 years of his career working in Washington Township and joined Park Tudor in 1982 as the Director of the Lower School until his retirement in 2005. Bill was a proud parent of Park Tudor alumni Billy Main ’87 and Julie Main Curry ’90, and grandfather of William Main ’19 and Oliver Main ’20.

“Bill ‘got’ kids,” said retired Park Tudor Upper School Director, Debbie Everett ’69. “He truly understood them and what they needed to grow. He had a softspoken approach that engaged kids and also helped them get on the right path when they needed guidance. I always enjoyed a good conversation with Bill (and his dry sense of humor). I truly enjoyed working with him.”

Park Tudor Lower School Director, Mary McGonagle, said, “I had the privilege of working with Bill for eight years before his retirement and appreciated his advice and mentorship when I moved into my current role. When faced with an important decision, he always asked the question, ‘What is in the best interest of the children?’ Bill always put the students first, and each time I have a difficult school decision to make this question guides my answer.”

During his tenure at Park Tudor, Bill became a tremendous advocate for the arts at Park Tudor,” said Melanie Marshall, retired fine arts faculty member Melanie Marshall. “He understood the role and importance the arts had in the education and development of the child. Bill was also a strong advocate for learning outside of the classroom. Students learned about history, language and cultures, and, most importantly, about themselves on these trips. Bill was the consummate chaperone, and I was privileged to accompany many fourth grade class trips to Williamsburg.”

A celebration of Bill’s life was held at Park Tudor on August 20.

Sophia Kennedy, Lulu Holden, Avi Holden, Abby Moyers, and Charlie Hirschman earned All-Conference Honors for the girls. Spencer Hughes, Daniel Mukhin, and Sam Mulvey earned All-Conference Honors for the boys. Sophia Kennedy was the girls conference individual champion for the second time, having won it previously in 2019.

The boys team finished their season at the Sectional Meet, placing 8th. They were led by Dan Mukhin in 21st place and Nik Mukhin in 39th. Dan and Nik qualified individually for the Regional Meet, going on to place 47th and 70th. At the Regional Meet they went on to finish 9th as a team. Seniors Sophia Kennedy and Gretchen Farley advanced individually to the Semi-State Meet, where they placed 2nd and 3rd respectively and qualified for the State Meet. This was Sophia’s second 3rd place finish in SemiState, earning her All-State honors for the fourth year in a row. Sophia also became the first girl in the 5k era (the girls raced 4k until 2007) to place in the top five at the IHSAA State Meet in all four years of her high school career. Gretchen Farley placed 5th at the State Meet, also earning All-State honors for the third year in a row. Her previous finishes were 12th in 2020, and 4th in 2021.

Boys Soccer

Sophia’s season and personal best of 17:10.3 is a new school record that is unlikely to ever be broken. Gretchen’s season and personal best of 17:27.4 is the second fastest time in school history, a mark that is also unlikely to be broken. Sophia and Gretchen go down as the fastest duo from the same school in state history.

Charlie Hirschman, Sophia Kennedy, Abby Moyers, Alexander Boeckmann, Dan Mukhin, Nik Mukhin, and Sam Mulvey earned Academic All-State honors. Both the girls and boys teams look to build on the success of 2022 in the fall of 2023.

The boys soccer team finished off a fantastic season by bringing home the IHSAA Boys IA State Soccer Championship, with a season record of 20-2-1. The started off the season ranked #1 in the state in 1A, hosting the Tigers from Northwestern High School for their season opener. After falling behind early 1-0, the team rallied off 5 unanswered goals and won 5-2. The team quickly shot to 4-0 for the regular season. They competed in the Lebanon Invitational, defeating the Bisons from Benton Central in game one and the Tigers from Lebanon 4-2 in the championship match. Congratulations to the Panthers on a great season!

Central and Muncie Burris in the Covenant Christian Invite to move to 6-0 for the season.

In the heart of the season, the Panthers posted a string of 3-0 wins over Indianapolis Lutheran, Greenwood Christian Academy, Speedway and Union County, followed by a 3-1 loss at Western Boone to move to 10-1 and a #8 ranking in 2A. A string of wins over teams including Scecina, Shortridge, Pike, Warren Central and Guerin Catholic brought the team to a record of 20-3 and a #5 ranking in 2A. The team placed second in the PAAC Conference Tournament, losing in the championship match to Muncie Burris 2-1. They finished off the regular season with wins over University High School and Lapel, and losses to North Central and Hamilton Heights. The Panthers hosted the IHSAA Sectional over Fall Break. They were victorious in opening round action vs. the Warriors from Covenant Christian 3-0. They then took on the Cadets from Cascade High School in the championship match, winning 4-1. This was the first Sectional won by a PT volleyball team since 2011. The team then advanced to the Cascade Regional, but unfortunately were defeated by the Crusaders from Scecina Memorial in 5 sets. Congratulations to the volleyball team on an outstanding season!

Girls Golf

The girls golf team started off the season competing in the Lapel Bulldog Classic at The Edge Golf Course. The team tied for 7th out of 15 teams and shot 380. The Panthers were led by senior Sia Patel, who shot 74 to place 6th overall. They followed that performance up with back-to-back wins over Perry Meridian, Beech Grove and Speedway. Next, the team headed to Hickory Stick Golf Course to compete in the Trojan Classic hosted by Center Grove High School, finishing 12th out of 19 teams with a 380.

A highlight of the season was the Marion County Girls Golf Tournament at Smock Golf Course. The team of Sia Patel, Anastasia Ebersole, Lilianna Spartz, Mischa Mallbris, and Ingrid Spartz shot 366, which earned them 2nd place out of 16 teams. Sia and Anastasia also made the All Marion County Team, finishing 2nd and 8th overall. During that match, Sia set another PT girls golf record by shooting 73, which broke the previous record she set in August.

The Panthers also brought home the PAAC conference title with a 168 at Woodwind Golf Course. Sia Patel and Liliana Spartz were co-medalists; each shot a 37 and Liliana also made her

first eagle during the match. The team capped off their very successful season with a Sectional Championship at Maple Creek Golf Course.

Football

Last year’s senior class set a trajectory of excellence and this year the goal was to prove it was not a one-time thing. The 2022 Panthers met the challenge, going 9-4 on the year, and won the school’s third-ever Sectional Championship.

Offensive MOP: Charlie Perine

Charlie Perine will graduate as the school’s new leader for single-season receiving yards and touchdowns. His 56 catches for 1196 yards and 14 TD were instrumental in earning the Panthers 41.2 points per game. Junior QB, DJ Gordon, led the team in both passing and rushing this year.

Defensive MOP: Will Harris

Will Harris set a new school record for tackles in a season (152). His efforts alongside seniors Tommy Crossin and Bryson Hobbs helped Park Tudor to 27 turnovers and 31 3/outs in the 13-game season. All three were Honorable Mentions for the All-Marion County team.

Newcomer of the Year: Rod Wheeler

Rod, a senior in his first season with Park Tudor, gave major contributions in all three phases of the game. Additionally, freshmen Landon Guerra and Thomas Lillo provided muchneeded minutes on the defensive side of the ball. Contributions from newcomers like these promise a bright future. Overall it has been a great year, full of things to celebrate. The team is proud, not yet satisfied. We’ll be back for more next year!

Annual Report

2021-2022

Dear Friends of Park Tudor,

The following Annual Report honors and recognizes gifts made from July 1, 2021 to June 30, 2022 by approximately 1,000 donors to Park Tudor, including current and past parents, alumni, grandparents, faculty and staff. We are pleased to recognize the generosity of our community on the following pages.

We were thrilled to complete two exciting capital projects that opened last year. First, we completed the third phase of renovations to the Frederic M. Ayres, Jr. Auditorium; as part of this project we expanded the lobby to provide more space for events and performances, upgraded the restrooms, and created a more inspiring entrance. The expanded lobby also provides additional gallery space to display student work and to host visiting artists. Many donors made this project possible, but I’d like to offer special thanks to the Allen Whitehill Clowes Charitable Foundation, the Ayres Foundation, Marianne Williams Tobias, and Fritz and Shele French.

Thanks to the more than 120 donors to the Build Possibility capital campaign, we opened the Irsay Family Sports Center for Health and Wellness in late November 2021. This building serves students throughout the day with a balanced program that supports physical and emotional fitness. In addition to traditional physical education classes, we also offer yoga and weight training. Upper School students have the chance to exercise during free periods in the cardio room and in the Murphy Family Fieldhouse, and to grab a healthy breakfast at the beginning of the day. The lobby and “social staircase” have become popular spaces for students to gather to study during the day and after school. This was the largest capital project that the school has undertaken, and we are grateful to all the Build Possibility donors who made the dream of this transformational space a reality for our students.

Throughout the year, the development office worked with parent volunteers, alumni and faculty to find creative ways to engage our community. With the Booster Club we continued to host popular all-school spirit nights prior to home football games. Our office also partnered with the Booster Club to host the fifth annual Trivia Night. In April, we were thrilled to work with the Fine Arts Department to bring the popular “Cabaret” event back in person; more than 120 guests enjoyed performances by Lamonte Kuskye’s Upper School students on the stage of The Cabaret in downtown Indianapolis. The Trivia Night and Cabaret events raised more than $40,000 for the athletics and fine arts programs.

We were delighted to welcome alumni back to campus last year. We hosted reunion weekends in November and April to make up for the reunions that we had to cancel in 2020. For the first time we also hosted a “cluster reunion” for the classes of 2010, 2011 and 2012, giving alumni the chance to reconnect with friends from other classes. Finally, we went back on the road to visit graduates studying at Indiana and Purdue Universities. In the spring, we hosted many cherished end-of-year events and traditions including the Senior Breakfast, Senior Serenade, and the fifth and eighth grade celebrations.

On behalf of the entire school community, my heartfelt thanks to all of you for your generous financial contributions and for everything you do to make Park Tudor such a special place for all our students.

With gratitude, Kelly Lamm Teller ’87

Make payments that are convenient for you. Pledge your gift to the Annual Fund indicating the amount of your contribution at www.parktudor.org/give. Whether you wish to make monthly payments or one payment at a later date, all pledges must be fulfilled by the end of our fiscal year, June 30.

SECURITIES

You can make your Annual Fund donation with a gift of stock. A gift of appreciated securities may allow you to avoid capital gains on the increased value of the stock as well as a charitable deduction for the full market value when the gift is made. Check with your financial advisor for more details. Please contact the Development Office for assistance in this process.

MEMORIAL AND HONORARIUM GIFTS

Your gift may be made in memory or in honor of a colleague, student, teacher, classmate or family member who is special to you. Please include this information in the appropriate area on the gift/pledge envelope or the notes section of the online donation form. The Development Office will notify the individual(s) or family of your tribute.

Park Tudor greatly appreciates every gift to the school and proudly acknowledges each donor in the Annual Report. If you wish your gift to be anonymous, please indicate so in the appropriate area on the gift/pledge envelope or online donation form.

Each year, Park Tudor School offers a variety of opportunities to support the school, both financially and through in-kind donations. Listed in these pages are the names of those who have made donations to one or more of the following: Annual Fund, capital campaign, endowed funds, estate gifts realized and restricted funds. We extend a warm thank you for their commitment to our students and our school.

15 PARK TUDOR PHOENIX FALL 2022 ANNUAL REPORT

Programs and Initiatives Supported by the 2021-2022 Annual Fund

The Park Tudor Annual Fund helped make many programs and initiatives across the school possible. Following are just some examples.

• Another successful season for Panther Robotics - both Upper School and Middle School teams - culminating in two State Championships and five invitations to VEX World Championships in May.

after a third-place finish in the Sectional tournament.

• A rousing performance of Chicago: Teen Edition as our Upper School musical in the spring.

• A full season for our Upper School Debate team, highlighted by three entries breaking into the Sweet-Sixteen single-elimination bracket at the State Tournament.

• A Middle School performance of Disney’s Moana, Jr.

• A presentation by Micah Johnson ’09, who returned to campus to speak to Upper School students during an assembly. He shared his experiences transitioning from Major League Baseball player to successful artist, and also talked about creating and selling NFTs of his popular character, Aku.

• Entries to the Sertoma Club of Broad Ripple’s Freedom Essay Contest; five sixth-graders brought home awards for their essays addressing “What does freedom mean to me?”

• A fantastic weekend of performances of She Kills Monsters, as Upper School students returned to the stage for the annual fall play.

• A successful year of sports. Some highlights:

The varsity boys soccer team competed in the Semi-State Championship game.

A Sectional win by our football team.

Third- and fourth-place finishes in the State Cross Country meet by Sophia Kennedy and Gretchen Farley

The girls golf team advanced to Regionals.

A trip to the Sectional Championship game for the girls basketball team.

In the girls State Track and Field meet, Gretchen Farley placed 2nd in the 800-meter run and 3rd in the 1600, Sophia Kennedy placed 2nd in the 3200, and Kate Weigand placed 14th in pole vault.

We qualified our first 4x100 relay team in the boys State Track and Field meet; they placed 16th.

The boys golf team advanced to Regionals

• Thirty-four awards for 11 talented Upper School writers in the 2022 Scholastic Art and Writing Awards competition. Nine PT visual artists received recognition in the competition.

• A thriving DECA team, with students bringing home awards at district, state, and international business competitions.

• Second-place finishes for Park Tudor’s Chemistry Olympiad teams in both the first-year and advanced Indiana Section ACS USNCO competitions.

• Participation by nine Upper School students in the inaugural Electric Vehicle World Grand Prix hosted by Purdue University School of Engineering and sanctioned by the World Karting Association.

• A virtual return to campus for six PT alums to talk to juniors and seniors as part of our annual alumni panel, in which current Upper School students get a taste of college life.

• The return of the annual Living History Museum, during which third-graders present biographies of different “Change Makers of the World.”

• The annual Patriot Run, back after a two-year hiatus. Fourth- and fifthgraders donned their patriotic finery and braved the cold to complete a two-mile run around campus. Students trained for the run for several weeks during Health and Wellness classes.

The Park Tudor Janet Flanner Visiting Artist Series was thrilled to welcome award-winning, bestselling author and Pulitzer Prize Fiction Finalist Tim O’Brien to campus on November 11 for a reading and Q&A with our Upper School students. Mr. O’Brien read an excerpt from his collection of short stories, "The Things They Carried," and answered a series of questions moderated by Upper School English Teacher Mrs. Laura Gellin.

It was an inspiring and memorable way to spend Veterans Day.

25 PARK TUDOR PHOENIX FALL 2022 ANNUAL REPORT

Alumni Feature: Maya Leibman ’84 Takes Flight

Until September, Maya Leibman ’84 was executive vice president and chief information officer for American Airlines, a position she held since 2012. As CIO, Maya oversaw all technology efforts for the airline, including software development, infrastructure, operations, and cybersecurity. During her 28-year career at American Airlines, Maya has served in a variety of roles and has overcome many challenges, including economic downturns, 9/11, bankruptcy, a merger with US Airways, and most recently the COVID-19 pandemic. I recently sat down with Maya to review her successful career and learn more about her recent move to London with her family.

You earned your Bachelor’s Degree in English Literature from the University of Chicago. How did you transition from a liberal arts background to IT?

It was really a bit of a fluke. At the University of Chicago, I gravitated towards English lit classes and always enjoyed them a lot. I credit Mr. Foxlow (longtime Park Tudor English teacher) for instilling in me a love of reading and books which carried on into college and beyond. I spent my junior year in Italy and when I came back, English was the only area where I had enough credits to graduate in four years, so that became my major. Perhaps that’s not the best way to choose one’s major! After college I moved to Los Angeles and worked at an ad agency which was a lot of fun, but I knew it wasn’t forever and soon I went back to school to get my M.B.A at U.C. Berkeley. American Airlines was recruiting at Berkeley for a role in the pricing and yield management area which I thought I’d go do for a year or maybe two at the most. I ended up staying for 28 years. American has been a great company for me and one that encouraged moving around a lot which is ultimately how I ended up in tech. I have held lots of different jobs during my time here, including the launch of AA.com in 1998, working in Argentina for our partner Aerolineas Argentinas, being President of the world’s largest loyalty program - AAdvantage and ultimately, leading the technology organization as the CIO. I’m really fortunate to have made my career at a company that encouraged gaining a breadth of experience.

So much has happened during your tenure at American Airlines. What are the biggest challenges you’ve faced?

If you had asked me this a couple years ago I would have rattled off impactful events like 9/11, the financial crisis of 2007/2008, the bankruptcy, the merger with US Airways, the grounding of the Boeing 737 MAX and other events like those. But now I’d have to say the biggest challenge was surviving COVID when overnight we lost virtually all customers and revenue. There is no playbook for something like that. We immediately grounded hundreds of aircraft and I can assure you there are no systems, no processes, to manage that since, of course, the aircraft aren’t meant to sit on the ground. Layer all this with the changes in how we work, the constantly changing regulatory environment, and the need to keep our customers and team members safe. For sure, this industry never gets boring.

You not only survived the merger between American and US Airways, but thrived and continued moving up in the company. How were you able to successfully navigate that period?

The merger was a fascinating learning experience for me. It was largely the team from US Airways that came in to run American, and so almost overnight all of my colleagues changed. Luckily I found the team from US Airways very welcoming and open. They made time for me and cared about what I thought. Most of all, I think I’ve been adaptable. Many people misinterpret Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution as survival of the fittest or strongest, when really what he talked about is survival of the most adaptable. Success in business, and in life for that matter,

requires a lot of adaptability. That’s true especially in tech which as we all know is constantly changing and evolving.

What has been your experience as a woman in IT and the C-suite - both male-dominated environments - and what is your advice for other women as they pursue careers in fields that might be dominated by men?

When I first became CIO I laughed when I went to tech conferences, because there was never a line for the women’s restroom, but the line for the men’s room was out the door! There have been many times when I was the only woman in the room. I realized early on that I needed to speak up and make my voice heard. I’ve been lucky to work with a lot of great men who were both mentors and allies for me.

My advice is not to let your inner critic get the best of you - let your inner champion speak more. Sometimes women start second-guessing themselves: “I’m not good/smart/ accomplished/whatever enough.” We need to understand that we deserve to be where we are and we have value to add. We need to speak up and share our opinions. Fortunately times are changing, and I’m now in a text/networking group with about 200 women CIOs and CXOs in technology. There are more women taking on these roles than ever before and the line for the women’s room has gotten a lot longer!

You’ve had such a demanding career, and have also raised a family. How have you been able to achieve work-life balance?

When I was younger I thought that if I just worked really hard and focused only on that, I would get ahead. Makes sense right? What I found is that when you sacrifice other parts of your life and what makes you a whole and complete human being for your work, you start to resent your job and end up doing it poorly. It has the opposite effect from what you intended. I realized that in order to be my best at work, I needed to not short-change my family and the other things I enjoy doing. I heard a great quote from organizational psychologist Adam

27 ALUMNI FEATURE PARK TUDOR PHOENIX FALL 2022

Grant that went something like “to get quality of work you need to have quality of life.” The reality is that no one is going to tell you to take time off; you need to take it yourself so that you can spend time pursuing your passions outside of work. You need to make your quality of life happen.

How did your Park Tudor education help prepare you for your future?

Mr. Foxlow (longtime Park Tudor English teacher) was a big influence on me. He set me on a path of reading literature, instilled a passion for books, and also taught me to write well. Writing is critically important; I think that no matter what career path you choose, if you aren’t able to clearly and artfully express your views to the world you will struggle.

I was also heavily involved in the band with Mr. Staubach (longtime Park Tudor band and orchestra teacher) and theater with Ms. Ulen (longtime Park Tudor drama teacher). I loved being involved in the plays and musicals and those experiences gave me the ability to stand up in front of a group of people and perform without being nervous or shy. I think that the performing arts are underappreciated as a contributor to success in business; part of the reason I think I’ve excelled

is because of the path that Park Tudor put me on. I’ve stayed involved in the theater; I worked in a professional theater company while I was at the University of Chicago and I serve on the Board of Directors of the Dallas Theater Center and have continued to be a patron.

What is next for you in your career?

American Airlines has a new CIO on board, so I’ve been helping with his transition; that will continue through the end of the year. Following that, I’ll be transitioning to an ad hoc consulting role in London. American has a large operation in the U.K. and throughout Europe, along with strong partnerships in this area with carriers like British Airways so there are many projects I will tackle. I’m really enjoying living in London and am getting properly schooled on how to make a cup of tea, how to mind the gap, and which football club to root for.

Senior Kelsey Clouse Reports on a Summer in Taiwan

29 STUDENT FEATURE PARK TUDOR PHOENIX FALL 2022

I applied for the National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI-Y) Summer Chinese Mandarin program in October 2021. I went through a series of applications and different processes simply because I thought I would throw my hat in the ring. The application was free and fairly short and so after I finished it I forgot about it for a few months. I got my acceptance to receive the scholarship at the end of April and completed all the preprogram work by the beginning of June. My cohort was going to be in Kaohsiung City in Southern Taiwan where we would take classes at Wenzao Ursuline University.

In June we were flown to San Francisco, the pre-program orientation location for those going to Taiwan, and I got to meet everyone in my cohort. Over those three days, we had the liberty to explore the city in our free time and then participated in group activities together. This was my first time traveling alone and traveling across the country, so I was very anxious and scared I wouldn’t have any friends, but San Francisco was a great time to meet everyone and get to know the strangers you were going to be spending the next seven weeks with. We all traveled across the city and I got to go to In-and-Out Burger for the first time, play with children in the park, and be amazed by the massive grocery stores with my new friends. After those few days, we prepared for the 13-hour flight to Taiwan.

Due to Taiwan’s COVID regulations, we had to be in quarantine for a week upon our arrival, take a series of COVID tests, and update the Taiwan Disease Control every day on our health. During quarantine, we had class for three hours a day on Zoom, where we went over vocabulary and language patterns. Other than that we were could whatever we wanted; often some of us would go on Zoom and play video games and just get to know each other. The hotel we stayed at gave us so much food - we got three bento boxes a day along with the occasional local treat and snacks. When we first arrived at the hotel they had given

us many local snacks and drinks that I had never even heard of before. Along with every snack, our resident directors would describe to us what the snack was along with any cultural significance that it held. It was a great way to get to experience the culture while confined to a hotel room. My friends and I would often order UberEats from local restaurants to our rooms and indulge in all our free time.

Once released from quarantine we were able to explore the city of Kaohsiung, and within the first week, we visited several museums, restaurants, malls, temples, and night markets. Within the night markets there was a large array of many different international foods from all over the world, but the most common thing that I found at every night market we traveled to all across Taiwan were mango smoothies (芒果冰 沙). They were a staple along with scallion pancakes, soup dumplings, and other hand-held foods. The night markets were an amazing place to experience the average life of locals and students on weekends. My friends and I went out for hotpot (火 锅) almost three times a week.

The cultural excursions were my favorite part of the trip because we got to all travel together on a long bus (almost resembling a party bus because it had karaoke mics), sharing our funny stories and getting to know each other. We traveled to Qishan District (旗山車站), known for its old street markets, Nantou County (南投縣), which has the Sun and Moon Lake and beautiful mountains, Taitung City (臺東市), where we got to go to the beach, Hualien County (花锅市), where we went hiking in the mountain caves, and Taipei City (臺北), where we went to Taipei 101. Within two months I was able to travel all across Taiwan and catch a glimpse of the beautiful nature and rich cultural history that still encompasses the country today. All along these cultural excursions, we had several teachers from those regions help us experience the culture firsthand,

30 PARK TUDOR PHOENIX FALL 2022 STUDENT FEATURE
Kelsey Clouse and friends in Taiwan

through learning the native dances, and rituals, and learning how to cook special dishes, I was able to fully appreciate all the diversity between the native cultures across the country.

My language classes were three hours a day on school days, where we went over the new words and language patterns that we reviewed the night before. In Taiwan, students selfteach themselves the lessons the night before, allowing us to go straight into using those new words the next day. In class, we worked through passages, listened to conversations, and answered questions all with the new vocabulary. As I traveled around the country I slowly became more and more aware of these new words as I overheard locals during conversation or even when talking to the people in my cohort; slowly there were more and more words that I easily recognized. My language learning experience in Taiwan was a gradual one that allowed me to learn the words in class and then practice them in the real world, allowing me to not only practice with a textbook but also with people on the street. Our class also had field trips to the mall where we got to interview strangers using all the new things we learned. It gave us every opportunity to try and truly understand these new concepts. Every day, wherever I went I was practicing my conversational Chinese and reading all the local signs. Being surrounded by Chinese and having very limited access to English exponentially increased my language abilities as it pushed me to apply what I learned to get around and navigate my everyday life.

We were also given the opportunity to stay with host families for two weekends, where they could take us on trips as well and show us family life in Taiwan. With my host family, I was able to travel to art museums and climb a mountain. We also made visits to their grandparents’ houses where we baked together and learned how to play mahjong.

The people were what made a difference during the whole trip. Everyone in the cohort was assigned a Language Partner (锅伴) which was a student from Wenzao who would take us on trips around the city and help us with our conversational Chinese. My language partner - Wednesday was her English namebecame one of my closest friends and we still keep in touch today. Within my cohort, I was also able to make lifelong friends who really helped me survive the trip. It was my first time traveling abroad and my first time traveling alone, therefore I was very anxious about feeling alone and homesick; however, the close friends I made on this trip are some of the best people I know. We would go everywhere together, hang out in the dorm rooms, eat lunch in the cafeteria, and support each other through the tougher parts of the trip. I am so lucky to have been chosen for this opportunity, and I am always going to remember the best summer of my life.
