PARK TUDOR PHOENIX FALL 2018

3

NEWS OF THE SCHOOL

From the Head’s Desk Looking back over my 35 years in the world of independent schools, I am used to the typical rhythm of school life and the feeling of optimism that accompanies the beginning of each new school year. However, this year that sense of optimism has far outstripped anything I have previously experienced. This fall I have felt a groundswell of commitment and enthusiasm, not only for the start of the school year, but also for the future of our wonderful school. The visit of our ISACS accreditation team helped remind me of how much Park Tudor has to offer and the bright future we have on the horizon. Seeing the school through the eyes of visitors helps reconnect us to the positive attributes of our community, and this certainly happened with the visit of the ISACS team. One aspect of Park Tudor that the team found remarkable was the sense of optimism and commitment to the school, which was discernible throughout the school community. As we move forward together, we will be guided not only by this optimism and commitment, but also by our reimagined strategic plan and the recommendations that will be forthcoming in our ISACS accreditation report. Our strategic plan, PT2020 Reimagined, has three main pillars. The first is educational excellence. One of the central elements of the Park Tudor academic program is the focus on an outstanding, well-rounded educational program for all our students. As we strive for academic excellence, it is critical that we incorporate the increasing body of educational research and brain science that informs us about how students learn. To that end, we are excited to be working with the Center for Transformative Teaching and Learning to refine and strengthen our strategies for achieving academic excellence.

The second pillar is our facilities. Our beautiful campus has a remarkable architectural signature that references our Indiana home through the use of local limestone. However, while many of our independent school peers have engaged in a veritable “arms race” of new building, we have comfortably lived with our present buildings. Our last major renovation was 18 years ago. Recent developments in educational architecture have focused on the importance of creating dynamic, flexible teaching spaces with natural light, access to fresh air, ergonomic furniture and brighter colors. Our wonderful academic program deserves the modern infrastructure that best supports our learning objectives, while respectfully echoing the existing Park Tudor architectural aesthetic. We are moving forward with a significant portion of this work, having engaged the architectural firms Lake Flato and CSO Architects to develop a campus Master Plan (please see page 6 for more information). Community engagement forms the third pillar of the strategic plan. One of the ways in which we can support our school, and the broader city of Indianapolis, is by engaging with the community to promote our values and commitment to education. We will continue to seek out ways to connect with teachers and students beyond our walls. Not only will this allow us to fulfill our promise as a responsible member of the community, but it will also provide enormous potential for learning for our students as they develop an understanding of a world beyond the gates of PT. I look forward to working with all of you as we take major steps toward securing our future while maintaining our traditional commitment to providing an excellent, well-rounded education for all of our students. .

Park Tudor Hires Lake Flato and CSO Architects to Complete Master Plan Park Tudor School has hired Lake Flato Architects, a Texas-based architecture firm with extensive secondary school and higher education experience, and Indianapolis-based CSO Architects to complete a Campus Master Plan. Lake Flato and CSO have worked together previously, teaming to design the Prindle Institute for Ethics at DePauw University. The Master Plan for Park Tudor’s campus is expected to be completed in early 2019. The team is developing a comprehensive approach to the campus that catalyzes Park Tudor School’s vision of delivering an excellent educational experience to all students and invigorating the Park Tudor community. The plan will include considerations for renovating existing buildings, as well as recommendations for new facilities and landscape improvements. The plan will include multiple construction phases, with the execution of phase one likely to begin soon after the approval of the Master Plan. “We are thrilled to have Lake Flato and CSO on-board to help us with this crucial project,” said Gareth Vaughan, Head of School. “Their expertise will be essential as our campus evolves to better meet the needs of education in the 21st century.”

Second Annual Trivia Night Attracts a Sold-Out Crowd The Park Tudor Booster Club hosted its 2nd annual Trivia Night on Saturday, November 10, attracting a sell-out crowd. More than $26,000 was raised to support PT Athletics, including $8,000 raised as part of a mission bid to “Jazz Up the Gym” with new decorative signage. The Basement Brainiacs team, including alumni Emily Hebert Groves '93, Jon Teller '89 and Cathy Yingling Chapelle '87, brought home the coveted trophy. Thank you to all of the volunteers who worked tirelessly to pull off a fantastic event!

Upper School Students Screen Heartland Film Festival Submissions

Adds Greg Papay, a partner with Lake Flato, “Park Tudor’s 56acre campus provides an idyllic setting for learning. Our team has an opportunity to catalyze and nurture the coming generations of Park Tudor students with enhanced buildings and landscapes that will be relevant in the future – we are truly honored to be partnering with Park Tudor School on this important endeavor.”

As part of our Visiting Artist Series and partnership with Heartland Film Festival, on October 12 freshmen, sophomores and juniors screened the documentary film, "Phil's Camino" in Ayres Auditorium. The students also heard a presentation by filmmaker/producer Annie O'Neil. Seniors traveled to AMC Castleton Theater to screen the Teen Shorts included in the Festival.

Alan Tucker, president of CSO Architects commented, “We look forward to collaborating with Park Tudor to develop a Master Plan that will provide strategies to enhance their educational environment and contribute to their legacy of academic excellence.”

"Phil's Camino" tells the story of free spirit Phil, a man living with stage 4 cancer and dreaming of walking the 500-mile spiritual pilgrimage Camino de Santiago across Spain. Unable to make the trip, he does the next best thing: he builds a camino in the forest behind his house on Vashon Island, starts to walk, and traces his progress on a map. This remarkable journey is one of hope, acceptance, and freedom, and is sure to inspire anyone who has ever dreamed of doing something that sounded impossible. The film has won awards at 20 out of 25 festivals.

Once the Master Plan is completed in early 2019, Lake Flato and CSO will begin developing the design for Phase 1. The school hopes to begin construction and renovation work in 2020.

Students Collect Ecological Data on Campus Research Plot Students in Fred Pinch’s and Kathy Madren’s 9th Grade Biology classes spent the fall working outside on our 20-meter by 20-meter campus research plot. The plot is located in the woods on the north side of the pond. The biology students have been performing a variety of field ecology activities such as measuring tree biodiversity, testing hypotheses regarding bird predation of caterpillars, documenting community succession and exploring the impact of invasive plant species on the native species growing in the plot. The data the students collect from these studies will be analyzed and saved each year. This will give present and future students the opportunity to work like field ecologists and contribute to a long-term research project that will identify, map and detect changes in the plot over time. These outdoor biology classes give Park Tudor students firsthand experiences with living things and the ecological processes that shape the natural world. The lessons learned will help students appreciate the interconnections that exist on earth so that informed decisions can be made. These experiences and lessons also generate curiosity and wonder.

Uruguayan Students and Teachers Visit Park Tudor The Lower School was pleased to once again welcome a group of students and their teacher chaperones from Montevideo. This long-standing exchange program offers students the extraordinary opportunity to meet friends from Uruguay and learn about their culture first-hand. As part of the exchange, Park Tudor students will travel to Uruguay, staying with families and attending school in Montevideo. During their time in Indianapolis, the Uruguayan visitors enjoyed several sightseeing field trips around the city, and attended classes at Park Tudor. Thank you to all of the families who graciously opened their homes to our guests.

NEWS OF THE SCHOOL

The 2018 season was a monumental one for the Park Tudor varsity volleyball team. With a 23-7 final mark and number 6 ranking in 2A, the Panthers exceeded all expectations. The season started off with seven straight wins over Shortridge, Irvington, University, Lutheran, Triton Central, Speedway, and Union County. The first ZRatings poll had Park Tudor ranked #1 in the state. With this momentum, PT continued the season with a championship tourney trophy, defeating North Central in their own invitational 29-27, & 25-16. It was Park Tudor’s first-ever victory over North Central in that tourney. The Panthers followed up that victory with a 3-1 defeat of Scecina and a 3-0 victory over 2017 Semi-State Finalist Covenant Christian.

The boys tennis team celebrates a Conference title. The team captured the Indiana Crossroads Conference Championship; the following players were named All Conference: Brett Liebross, Meyer Rothbaum, Isaac Hargett, Eli Anderson, Trace Held, Adam Katz and Cole Momcilovich. Outstanding Academic Achievement for a Junior/Senior earning a 3.76 GPA or higher went to Jake Baker, Aaron Chai, Matthew Fu, Aidan Harris, Trace Held, Ellis Lacy, Brett Liebross, Cole Momcilovich, Matthew Xie and Harry Zhou.

Cross Country

After a 3-1 loss at Guerin Catholic, the Panthers were victorious over Beech Grove, Indiana School for the Deaf, and Warren Central. Park Tudor also defeated Ritter High School to clinch the conference title. The Panthers then traveled to the Eastern Hancock invite and defeated Central Christian Academy, Eastern Hancock, Blackford, and a tough Frankton team in the finals by scores of 25-13, 25-20 to win another tournament championship. Park Tudor was eliminated in the second round of the Marion County tourney by Perry Meridian, but racked up 3 more victories over #9-ranked Lapel, Monrovia, and Pike on senior night to finish 23-6 and 7-0 in the Indiana Crossroads Conference. The team was defeated by Semi-State Champion Heritage Christian to finish off their season at 23-7.

The Park Tudor boys and girls cross country teams finished out a strong, but weather-shortened, 2018 campaign, laying the foundation for a season in 2019 that could be their most successful in years. Both teams placed third in their final Indiana Crossroads Conference meet, with sophomore Gretchen Betz earning All Conference honors in the girls' race. The boys finished 8th and girls 7th at the Brebeuf Sectional. The boys advanced two individuals, juniors Will Knitter and Jaden Seymour, to the regional meet in Noblesville, while the girls advanced sophomore Gretchen Betz who set a personal best by 33 seconds. Academically, Varun Chheda, Ben Clifford, and Ethan Piper earned Academic All State honors. ICC Academic All Conference included Emily Fisher, Freddie Hoskins, Varn Chheda, Trevor Sullivan, Ethan Piper, Ben Clifford, and Vahin Vuppahlanchi.

The volleyball team celebrates a great season. Many players earned individual recognition. Ayesha Chou and Dia Moore-Freeman were named Academic All State; Kara Clouse earned Academic All Conference; Lily Sumner was named All Marion County; All Conference honors went to Lily Sumner (Player of the Year), Dia Moore-Freeman and Zoe Franz; these three girls were also nominated for All State honors.

NEWS OF THE SCHOOL

Football The 2018 football season for the Panthers was a very challenging one. While the team did not win any games, they are showing promise for the future. With just seven seniors on a 22-player roster, our Panthers were often out-numbered and out-gunned, but they fought hard in every contest. Senior co-captains Gabe Jones, Gabe Perry, and Caleb Thomas showed great leadership as we navigated the always tough Indiana Crossroads Conference games. Gabe Jones was recognized with All Conference honors. The future is bright for PT football, since many of our young players gained an enormous amount of varsity experience. We thank our seniors for their years of dedication and look forward to the continued development of our younger classes.

Crew PT soccer drives down the field.

Boys Soccer Park Tudor boys soccer team had a successful season, finishing with an overall record of 9-7-0, with a record of 4-2-0 in conference play. Season highlights included a win over Heritage Christian at home, and a victory at Scecina after being down 3-1 at halftime.

The Indianapolis Rowing Center, which includes several PT rowers, had a very strong fall season this year. The team had boats place in every regatta they have attended so far. Both girls and boys crews look very promising to take boats to Nationals next spring. The season ended the weekend of Nov. 3-4 in Tennessee, where the team competed against boats from all across the nation and from overseas as well.

In Sectional play, the Panthers were led by two goals from Jake Perine in the first round game, but eventually ended their season with a loss in the Sectional final. The team has a talented squad returning next season and hopes to bring home a Sectional Championship.

Girls Golf The girls golf team had a fun and exciting season. The team consisted of five seniors and four freshmen. The team got off to a slow start, missing a couple of key players for the start of the season, before the start of school. However, the team soon got into full swing, led by number-one senior Alissa Honigford and number-two senior Rachel Maier. The number-three player was freshman Mary Kate Tanselle, followed by seniors Alexa Coble and Olivia Murphy. The team finished with a .500 record and placed second at the Conference tournament, where Alissa was the individual low medalist for the fourth year in a row. The team was shooting their best scores leading up to Sectionals. The Sectional venue changed this season from South Grove to Old Oakland; the new course proved to be a very difficult challenge for the girls and the team was unable to advance as a team, placing fifth. However, Alissa Honigford was able to advance as an individual. The Regional tournament was played in Anderson at the Edge Wood Golf course. Alissa started off the round very well, but missed advancing to State by three strokes. Overall, the team had a great season and always gave it 100%. The seniors were able to provide leadership to the freshmen, so even though we are losing some great players, PT has some great young players to continue next season.

The PT football team takes the field.

Andrew Wu (fourth from left) with fellow team memebers at the Chemistry Olympiad.

Senior Andrew Wu Helps U.S. Take Gold in International Chemistry Olympiad In July, senior Andrew Wu was part of the team that represented the United States at the International Chemistry Olympiad in Slovakia and the Czech Republic, helping the U.S. team achieve its best-ever results - four gold medals.

meeting so many people across the state, country and internationally,” said Andrew. “It’s amazing that science can connect people in this way; I think that’s especially important in a globalized world.”

Getting to the International Chemistry Olympiad is a long process, beginning with local competitions and testing at the school level. In April the top two scorers from each school took a national exam, and from those results the top 20 students were chosen to attend a chemistry camp at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs in June. Those 20 students competed for two weeks, and then six students were chosen to compete for another three days. Finally, the team was narrowed to the four members who represented the United States at the Olympiad in July.

Andrew also says that competing in the International Chemistry Olympiad has fueled his love for the subject. “I love the scientific process and being able to explore what’s in front of you to understand what’s happening in the world,” he says. “Chemistry in particular also has a lot of applications to everyday life - cooking, for example. If your bread comes out too thick or too dry, chemistry can help you understand what to do to fix it.”

At the International Chemistry Olympiad, Andrew and his fellow team members competed in both chemistry lab and theory. All four U.S. team members placed in the top 15, which was the best result the U.S. team has ever achieved. It wasn’t all work, however; Andrew had plenty of time to tour Slovakia and the Czech Republic, and experience the culture. He was also able to connect with fellow chemistry students from around the world. “The best part of going to the Olympiad was

Andrew will likely continue to study chemistry and science in college and beyond. “Chemistry intersects with lots of fields medicine and engineering, for example. I’m also considering material science and working with superconductors,” Andrew says. One thing that isn’t in Andrew’s future is a return trip to the International Chemistry Olympiad; according to competition rules, once you’ve won a gold medal, you aren’t allowed to compete again.

ANNUAL NEWS OFREPORT THE SCHOOL

Dear Park Tudor Friends, I am pleased to share the 2017-18 Annual Report which recognizes the generous gifts of more than 1,200 donors to Park Tudor. These donors are connected to the school in myriad ways – parents (current and past), alumni, grandparents, faculty, staff, and friends – yet, all of these donors share a common passion for and belief in the mission of Park Tudor to provide an exceptional education and extraordinary opportunities to all our students. Your gifts provide tangible support for this mission throughout the school year, and we are pleased to highlight this generosity on the following pages. Many of you also dedicate countless volunteer hours to support Park Tudor. The following events and fundraisers were made possible by parent volunteers. We are so grateful to our incredible community members who work tirelessly throughout the year to support our students. Following is a small sample of these efforts: • The Park Tudor Parent Association used funds raised throughout the year at events like the Fall Family Festival to offer grants to teachers; the new “Wonderlab” in the Lower School is the result of one such grant. The Wonderlab offers a creative space for students to imagine and build. • In October, the PT Booster Club hosted its first annual Trivia Night. This sold-out event raised more than $13,000 for the Park Tudor athletics program. • The Fine Arts Guild hosted its annual Dinner Theater in March prior to the spring musical, Peter Pan. This annual event raised more than $42,000, part of which was used to develop and build the new “Fab Lab” in the Fine Arts building. The Fab Lab is a space for students to experiment with creative tools like 3-D printers and laser cutters to bring their ideas to fruition. Finally, I’d like to recognize the ongoing efforts of the Park Tudor Alumni Board. In addition to helping raise funds for the school through the “March Madness” and “Race to the Derby” campaigns, this creative and energetic group of alums also planned and hosted social and networking events throughout the year including: pumpkin carving at Lilly Orchard, professional networking at Gershman Partners on the rooftop of “Marietta on Mass Ave” overlooking downtown Indianapolis, and a social night at Top Golf. These events provide wonderful opportunities for alumni of all ages to gather socially and share their Park Tudor and professional experiences. On behalf of a grateful school community, I extend my thanks to all of you for your generous gifts of time, creativity, and financial support in support of the mission of Park Tudor. With gratitude, Kelly Lamm Teller ’87 Director of Development

Alumni Feature: Jay Ferguson ’91 Honors Friendship with Fundraising for ALS By Cathy Yingling Chapelle ’87 26

PARK TUDOR PHOENIX FALL2018

Jay Ferguson ’91 and Michael “Boomer” Wallace ’91 immediately connected on the first day of kindergarten at Park Tudor in 1978. Forty years later, Jay is honoring his lifelong friend by raising money for ALSTDI, as Boomer battles the disease. “I remember when Boomer got his nickname,” said Jay. “There were two Michaels in our kindergarten class, and the teacher said one could be Mike and one could be Michael. Boomer said, ‘I can be Boomer - that’s what my family calls me’ - and that was it.”

NEWS OF THE SCHOOL FEATURE

Jay and Boomer became even closer in high school, and though they went to different colleges, they visited each other. They drifted apart a bit after college when they found themselves living on opposite coasts, but every time their paths crossed, they reconnected and found themselves picking up their friendship where they left off. Like all of Boomer’s friends and family, Jay was shocked and devastated when Boomer was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) in 2016; only about one in 10,000,000 people are diagnosed with the disease. ALS is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord; unfortunately, there is no cure for ALS and currently no treatment that can slow its progression.

Soon after Boomer’s diagnosis, Jay and fellow PT alum Jen Johansen ‘91, her husband Rob Johansen, and Boomer’s cousin Scott Linsmith participated in a walk to raise money for the ALS Association. They raised $7,000 through online fundraising efforts. Since then, Jay has focused his fundraising efforts on ALS-Therapy Development Institute (ALS-TDI), an organization that is focused solely on finding a cure for ALS. “I was impressed by ALSTDI when I learned that $.87 of every dollar they raise goes to ALS research,” said Jay. “This is an organization that helps to give ALS patients hope,” he continued. “They are constantly looking out for promising drugs and starting new trials.” In July of 2017, Jay decided to do a birthday fundraiser on Facebook to benefit ALS-TDI. He received great support from his network of PT alums. “I had one alum reach out to me and offer to match the next $1,000 donated by Park Tudor alumni, and then a second alum did another matching gift,” said Jay. Jay’s efforts on Facebook raised $12,000 in 2017, far surpassing his expectations.

olis, Jay raised approximately $44,000 to support ALS-TDI. Jay estimates that about 70% of the donations came from his Park Tudor network. “It was amazing towards the end,” he said. “At one point, we were at $27,000 and I put a message out challenging people to get to $30,000; we made it in three hours.” Said Boomer, “Jay’s efforts have been off the charts. He’s been relentless in raising money for ALS-TDI. I am most grateful to him for all he has done, and continues to do, for me, my family and ALS-TDI.” Boomer added, “The support I have received from the PT community has been overwhelming, and the kindness of my oldest and dearest PT friends is extraordinary. I have laughed more in the last two years than in the last 20 years combined thanks to them.” Michael “Boomer” Wallace ‘91 will be honored as a Park Tudor Distinguished Alumni during Alumni Weekend, April 26-27, 2019. More information about Alumni Weekend and the Distinguished Alumni Award Dinner is available on page 32 of this magazine. If you would like to support ALS-TDI, you can find more information at www.als.net.

ple are still debating all of the issues that led to the Civil War and its tremendous aftermath,” he says. “There are also fascinating personalities involved - generals from both sides went to West Point together and then ended up fighting against each other. I am also very interested in the Constitutional and government changes that happened as a result.” Over the summer Trace was able to explore the Civil War in greater depth by attending the Civil War Institute’s Summer Conference in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. This premier conference for Civil War historians draws 400-500 participants for five days of tours and lectures with top experts in the field. Trace was awarded a full scholarship to attend the conference; he was one of 10 students to receive a scholarship from a field of 78 applicants. According to Trace, the best experience attending the conference was being able to meet authors and historians that he admires in-person. “I’ve read their books and seen them interviewed in documentaries, so it was great to meet them one-on-one,” Trace says. He adds that he’s been able to forge relationships with some of the historians he met at the conference, and he continues to correspond with them and get advice about his own research. Through his experiences in Mrs. Kathryn Lerch’s military history courses at Park Tudor and working on the Legacy Project, Trace developed original research using primary sources. During the summer of 2017, Trace traveled to Washington, D.C. with Mrs. Lerch and other Park Tudor students to conduct research in the National Archives. “Mrs. Lerch showed me how to move beyond simply reading other people’s research to draw my own conclusions and develop my own theories from looking at primary sources,” he says.

Trace in Gettysburg. For junior Trace Held, an interest in military history and the Civil War started at a very young age. Photos and videos show a fouryear-old Trace playing with plastic toy army men, lining them up and designating each soldier by rank. “I’ve been interested in military history for as long as I can remember,” Trace says. “In particular, I’m fascinated by Napoleonic tactics as well as American military history - which has led me to study the Civil War.” Trace adds that the scale and complex issues surrounding the Civil War make it a focus of continued study and research. “Peo-

In Mrs. Lerch’s Civil War history class, Trace wrote a research paper about General Robert E. Lee’s views of African Americans and slavery for the Gilder Lehrman Civil War essay contest. Originally limited to 1800 words, Trace is working on expanding the paper with the goal of submitting it for publication in a Civil War magazine. He has been able to seek advice about the paper from some of the professors he met during his time in Gettysburg. Trace is planning to continue studying history, and believes it is essential to understand current events. “One reason I enjoy studying primary sources is that I can ‘fact check’ modern media and politicians when they cite certain events. I can look back at accounts from the time and determine if things really happened that way. It’s rarely so black and white as our culture has defined many historical events.”
