pon their deliverance from Egypt, the children of Israel make camp at the foot of Mount Sinai. There, they set up twelve altars (one for each of the Twelve Tribes of Israel), and the people make sacrifices in celebration of their newfound freedom. God summons Moses to the top of the mountain, where he stays for forty days and forty nights as God dictates new rules for His people to live by. Unfortunately, the people have no idea why Moses has vanished. Left below, without

Numerical patterns appear throughout the Bible, lending structure and symbolism to some of the text’s most important themes. NUMBERS DO NOT appear randomly in the Bible, but rather stand for a deeper spiritual meaning. Scholars continue to explore the hidden numerical
messages in these sacred texts. Here, as an introduction, are some of the numbers that appear frequently, along with their biblical significance.

Throughout the 19th century, millions of Irish and Germans began to inhabit these new districts, followed in 1890 by the Italians and Eastern Europeans who flooded Ellis Island, a small island in the Bay set up as a customs office to control immigration. During the first decades of the 20th century, New York also became one of the principal destinations for what was called the Great Migration. This was the displacement of hundreds of thousands of AfricanAmericans from the slavery states of the south to the industrialised areas of the east as well as hundreds of thousands of Puerto Rican’s who took advantage of the new status as American citizens from 1917. This migratory phenomenon transformed the Big Apple into a model of diversity and a society with an independent dynamism little related to the rest of the United States both in material and ideological terms. Currently, six out of every 10 residents have descendants from multiple countries from all corners of Europe, with 16% having African-American roots, 15% Hispanic and

the remainder mainly Asian. This constant shift generated an incessant need for space which quickly overflowed Manhattan’s capacity and caused a gradual rise in the price of land which obliged builders to build upwards.
Growing up...
The Statue of Liberty 5 Since its opening in 1886 it has remained the single most iconic image of New York.
In just a few decades, and despite the Great Depression, Manhattan was transformed into a dizzyingly high paradise. The skyscrapers became the principal symbol of the city’s identity. These enormous structures adorned with art in the style of the admired European aesthetic fashions, represented huge engineering challenges; the Woolworth building (1913) was created in a neo-Gothic style in the manner of the great Medieval cathedrals; the Chrysler building (1930), with its silvery crown and spectacular lobby became a paradigm of Art Deco. In 1931, the Empire State Building became the tallest building on the planet, a title it held for more than forty years. It became a universal icon thanks to the gorilla King Kong in the 1933 film which served as a particular example of the culture concept exported successfully by New York to the rest of the world, based on originality, professionalism and popularisation and expressed in forms as distinct as Broadway musicals, the films of Woody Allen, the literature of Truman Capote, Tom Wolfe and Paul Auster, the music of Gershwin, Charlie Parker, Pete Seeger and Lou Reed, and the art of Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein, interpreted or exhibited in contemporary cultural venues such as the Lincoln Centre, Carnegie Hall, the MOMA and the Metropolitan Museum.
