Universidad de Magallanes in Chile Institute for Ecology and Biodiversity
The University of North Texas is a leader in the sciences and sustainable development and promotes an innovative multi-disciplinary approach within the fields. UNT plans to expand their successful study abroad course in southwestern Chile, Tracing Darwin’s Path, to many more students, colleges, and universities. With its strategic partners, the Universidad de Magallanes in Chile and the Institute for Ecology and Biodiversity, this grant to UNT will enable approximately 30 undergraduate and 20 graduate U.S. students to participate each year in field courses, research experiences, and internships in Chile, including at the pristine UNESCO Cape Horn Biosphere Reserve at the southern end of the Americas. These resources will more than triple the number of students participating in the existing Tracing Darwin’s Path study abroad course.

Northampton Community College emphasizes the importance of an interdisciplinary style of learning that stresses the connection between study-abroad and service learning. Additionally, they hope that this style of studying abroad stimulates students who often overlook international education so they are more aware of the importance of their role in a global society. communities with renewable energy sources. The course will be titled “Implementing Sustainable Energy Systems in Developing Communities” and will be focused on engaging STEM students. Program participants will become well versed in technical skills, relevant economic and political background, and valuable knowledge about alternative and renewable energies.

The University of Arizona is a US Top-20 research university with strengths in natural resources and environmental science, allied fields of hydrology and water resources geology, and environmental science, which are ranked number one in the US. The university’s mining program is one of the best in the world and the largest in the US. Seeking to create a sustainable umbrella organization for STEMfocused student exchanges related to sustainable resource development, the University of Arizona and its strategic partners Pontificia Universidad Católica de Perú in Lima and the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile in Santiago will create the new “Latin America Natural Resources Academy” and a new “Certificate in International Sustainable Resources Development” to increase the number of bilingual students trained in key STEM disciplines.
