Message from Our President The President’s Internship Program (PIP) is unlike any internship that you’ll have access to in Washington, D.C. Developed by interns for interns, PIP evolved from Partners’ 50-year legacy of cultivating youth and community leaders. I personally engage our President’s Interns in discovering their unique leadership styles, honing their professional skills and connecting with a wide range of professionals. With service at the heart of everything we do, we take a hands-on, collaborative approach to creating a learning rich experience. In the pages to follow you will meet our inaugural class of President’s Interns. In their own words, they’ll walk you through their journey with Partners. My hunch is that you’ll quickly see, at Partners you can be far more than just an intern!

Introduction The President’s Internship Program is a customized leadership and professional “skillsbuilding” experience in Washington D.C. for students and young professionals. Launched in 2013, PIP feeds into Partners’ network of over 200 alumni interns, builds institutional linkages with colleges and universities, and deploys graduates back into their communities to carry out projects of social change. With local chapters and PartnersCampuses as primary assets, PIP is positioned to strengthen and reinforce those partnerships. The standard program term is 10 to 15 weeks offered during the fall, spring, and summer. PIP is a fee-based program.

Two President’s Interns, Ruben Aguero and Danielle Martin, were awarded a scholarship to attend Partners’ 50th Anniversary Convention in Florianopólis, Brazil as winners of a proposal writing competition offered by the President’s Internship Program. They each designed a community project, submitted a written proposal for start-up funds, and defended their project concepts before a review panel. The proposal review panel consisted of former Partners’ staff, an International Board/ Chapter member, several local collaborators, and two alumni interns that now work at the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB/BID) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). Ruben Aguero’s proposal “e-Mbo’e: Internet for Education in Ciudad del Este” is designed to improve the academic performance of 15 high school students in the areas of math and science from Ciudad del Este, Paraguay through the creation of a pilot tutoring center in the local Municipal Library. Danielle Martin’s proposal “Empowering Others and Creating Partnerships through Resume and Cover Letter Writing and Mock Interviews” is a career development program designed to engage university students in leading mock interviews and resume/cover letter writing workshops to underserved Latino groups in their communities.
