Growing Importance of

BY: GOUR KANJILAL Now a days, everyone has positive thinking about the importance of Religious Tourism which allows us to safeguard our heritage and contribute to the social and economic development of the area and to the maintenance of the cultural heritage of the people. In India, every region have World Heritage monuments and religious centers of which some of them attract tourists from overseas also like Golden Temple, Amritsar, Tirupati Balaji in Tirumala, Char Dham in Garhwal Hills Varanasi –Rameshwaram –Badrinath- Puri of Char Dham of Shankaracharya, Ajmer Garib Nawaz Sharif and many more. These destinations can also organized through cultural looks with a great tourist attraction specially Hindu Circuits, Sikh

Circuits, Jain Circuits, Sufi Circuits, Islamic Heritage Circuits, Christian pilgrimage Circuits, Buddhist Circuits, Vedic routes, Shiva Circuits (Jyotirlinga visits) Ganpati circuits etc… This wide range of activities with religious content, are based at sometime on the different festive events which generate hundreds of thousands of trip every year like Kumbh Mela, Dussehra, Holi, Gurpurab, Pushkar fair, Budh Purnima so on. All these festivals are sufficiently attractive by themselves and give the visitors the chance of seeing colorful events and religious ceremonies as also enjoying beautiful landscapes at the same time. The existing resources that belong to our history and culture are without a doubt, innumerable and we must exploit them out by looking necessary

measures in order to raise awareness of their existence and to protect them. Already J&K Tourism is doing a big pilgrimage tourism boost at Vaishno Devi with over (4 million devotes per year). Tirupati Balaji visit in Andhra Pradesh (over 7 crore visitors) Sai Shirdi at Nashik over 2 million tourists, Uttarakhand visit to four Himalayan Shrines in Garhwal Hills (over 1.50 million) and states of Gujarat, Rajasthan, West Bengal, Odisha, Karnataka, Tamilnadu have a large volume of domestic and international tourists to pilgrimage centers, Bihar has good volume of Buddhist traffic. We need aggressive publicity to get increased volumes. Thus in Indian Tourism, a special focus is there on Cultural Tourism with link to Pilgrimage/Religious tourism for touristic purpose and boost festivals

A Bullish 2016 For Indian Tourism

Madhya Pradesh Tourism all set for 'Simhastha 2016'

By Gour Kanjilal India is poised to benefit from the surge in foreign tourist inflow through etourist visa and better infrastructure. The year 2016 is expected to have a good beginning and there is a positive growth trend in the International tourist arrivals. As per the international tourist arrival figures circulated by the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India (Market Research Division) upto November 71.3 lakh international tourists came to India. There is a growth of 4.5% with international tourist arrivals as compared to the foreign tourist arrivals of 67.94 lakh over the corresponding period of 2014. However, November arrivals were quite significant when international arrivals reached 8.15 lakhs as compared to foreign arrivals of 7.65 lakh during the month of November in 2014. Even the

global growth is around 3 to 4% as per WTO indication. But with e-tourist visa, 2016 may see a landmark difference in India’s International tourist arrivals. The percentage share of FTA's in India during November 2015 among the top 15 source countries was highest from USA (15.76%) followed by Bangladesh (12.27%), UK (11.00%), Canada (4.52%), Australia (4.22%), Malaysia (3.43%), Russian Fed (3.42%), Germany (3.34%), France (2.93%). Sri Lanka (2.89%), China (2.83%), Japan (2.51%), Singapore (2.19%), Nepal (1.77%) and Thailand (1.58%). These top 15 countries account for 74.66% of total FTAs during November 2015. It indicates how new markets have taken over the traditional markets. Unfortunately Foreign Exchange Earnings from tourism in rupee terms during January – November were 1, 12,958 crore compared to the Foreign Exchange Earning of Rs 1,12,958 crore with a growth of 1% during January – November 2015 over the corresponding period of 2014. Foreign Exchange Earnings from tourism in terms of US$ during January – November 2015 were US$ 17.685 billion with a growth of as compared to US$ $ 18,383 billion with a negative growth of 3.8% over January 2014 period. The marginal growth is FEE is really worrying us. Undoubtedly the positive trend in international arrivals is mainly due to the aggressive initiatives by the tourism government of India along with all the stakeholders in the industry since 2013.

These timely actions helped to contain the negative impact of the global economic slowdown. Tour Operators did their bit to regain the lost ground by holding road shows, workshops, seminars and enhanced participation in international travel exhibitions, which helped send the message that India means business and tour operators are ready to develop long terms business relations. Most of the tour operators and other stakeholders have strengthened their manpower by having special training programs and educational tours within the country to launch new packages taking advantage of the lean period. Tourist Visa-on-Arrival facilities now extended to 113 countries. The visa relaxation coupled with better air connectivity also have ensured steady inflow and this trend will continue all through 2016. With better infrastructure in place India is now perceived as the right holiday destination. There has also been a surge in cruise tourism as well since last year with improved cruise terminal facilities in Mumbai, Kochi, Goa and Visakhapatnam. Many leading cruise liners have included India as Port of Call in their global cruise packages. There have been sincere efforts from the tourism ministry to project India as an important MICE destination. With new convention centers in Hyderabad, Bangalore, Pune, Chennai etc, better international air connectivity improved

support services, hotels, rail services, etc. India started attracting big c o n v e n t i o n , P o s i t i v e l y, I n d i a n Convention and Promotion Bureau (ICPB) has taken the lead in MICE operations in a very professional manner. It is estimated that about 25% of the overall traffic to India could be for MICE purpose. Adventure Tourism is also gaining momentum with its season beginning in August. Tremendous growth can be expected in this sector with a series of n e w t re k k i n g ro u t s i n S i k k i m , Uttarakhand and Himachal, Pradesh attracting youngsters interested in ecofriendly tourism. Overall, India is being projected beyond the cultural monuments to more activity-oriented tourism as per the global trends to attract the youth. Sports Tourism potential in India has been well publicized specially golfing holidays. Focus has also shifted to rural tourism, spiritual tourism, medical health and wellness tourism. Our internationally recognized hospitals coupled with various Ayurvedic treatments available in Kerala, Goa, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu are added advantages. As the recovery pick up in major traffic generating countries, holiday spending will also be up in these countries and India is ready to take its due share. We can look forward to a good season in 2016 (unless no untoward events take place.) We mean business and we are ready to welcome guests.

COVER STORY Growing Importance of Religious Tourism Contd. Pg 1

linked to religious flavor. There are many semi – divine beings who have attained power through meditation and have a s h ra m s i n p l a c e s a n d attract devotees to their Mutts. Our renewed thrust to promote domestic tourism has special emphasis on promotion of “Spiritual” tourism. This is the segment which is very essential to balance the seasonality of inbound tourism as pilgrims move round the year. As the pilgrimage centres are often l o c a t e d a t re m o t e a re a s , t h e development of tourism to these centres lead to all round progress of the under developed areas and prosperity of the economy as a whole. Thus pilgrimage tourism contributes for socio-economic development. Since time immemorial India had been attracting pilgrims from all over the world on its divine trail. The range varies from the holiest of Hindu temples to the Buddhist, Jains, Sikh, Jewish, Bahais, Christians, Parasis, Islam, Sufis, Satnamis, Radhaswamis. All these religious sects co-exist in India with perfect harmony and present an unified symbol of the spirit of secularism. All these religions have their own pilgrimage centres located in cities, mountains, besides rivers, seas, on hill-tops; whatever be their size, wealth and all of them share one thing common and that is the intense faith of the devotees. Some of these places need strenuous efforts to reach at pilgrimage point. Similarly some are known for their architectural splendour. Many of these places have been sanctified by visit of their religious heads. Thus, India is rich spiritual centre for all faith, a Potpourri of varied culture. Each state has some religious place to offer. But the states of Tamilnadu, Karnataka, Kerala, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Orissa, Punjab, Bihar, Rajasthan, West Bengal, have houses of Gods and Goddess, Buddhist Monasteries, Sikh shrines, Jain Temples, which attract millions of devotees every year. Infact our d o m e st i c to u r i s m i s b a sed on pilgrimage tourism. Some of the temples attract devotees like Tirupati in Andhra Pradesh, Jaimatadi Temple at Vaishnodevi, Chardham Temples in Uttaranchal and Dwarka-Somnath in Gujarat to name a few Jyotirlingas – (An aspect of Shiva & there are 12 Jyotirlings) attract good number of devotees. The plan outlay for tourism is now increased for infrastructural development and State

Governments are being providing support for putting up facilities in the form of Yatri Nivas/ Yatrikas at major pilgrim site with central financial grant. Pilgrimage tourism is being developed on a circuit concept and each state has finalized one circuit for integrated

development. General feeling of the Government is that if we expect a substantially larger number of Buddhist traffic to come to these India from overseas, there should be sufficient air capacity to travel to India without hassle and there should be comfortable and clean accommodation. This implies that pilgrim tourism will be successful, if Quality of services can be offered as much as the quantity of products. This beings the need of the hour, Govt. have allowed under

its open-sky policy to run Charters to Gaya Airport so that Buddhist traffic can reach Bodhgaya hassle free. Even facilitation arrangement at airport have been improved. Facilities at Buddhist sites improved and major developmental activities are in progress at all Buddhist sites. This segment of tourism is now being packaged in overseas as “Spiritual Tourism” and tourists from overseas are also coming in numbers specially NRIs are coming for pilgrims to Shirdi, Tirupathi, Dwarka, Srilanka and Swami Narayan Temple, Christians Pilgirmage at Goa/ Kerla, Muslim Pilgrimage at Ajmer Dargah. In India Pilgrim Tourism is booming and is round the year affair now. INDIA: IT IS SPIRITUALLY YOURS.

linked to religious flavor.

As part of the worldwide introduction of the Visa Information System (VIS)1 , the Schengen States launched the VIS in India (and in the neighbouring countries2 ) on 2 November 2015. The purpose of this global VIS introduction process is to better protect applicants against identity theft and to prevent document fraud and socalled "visa shopping". Fingerprints are widely used within the EU as a more secure means of identification. The use of biometric data for identification purposes of a visa holder is a faster and more accurate way to identify a visa holder by border police. From 2 November 2015, Indian citizens requesting a Schengen visa will have to appear in person in order to provide biometric data (fingerprints and digital photography). This concerns the applications for the short-term Schengen visas (max. 90 days in 180 days). For subsequent applications

within next 5 years the biometric data will be copied from the previous visa application included in the VIS4. Apart from that, there will be no change in current procedures such as visa fee or forms. However, the applicants should be aware that due to provisions of biometric data, which might cause at the beginning some disruptions, the first visit to their respective Schengen State Consulate after 2 November 2015 might take a little bit longer. Exemptions from the obligation of fingerprinting are provided for the following - • categories of applicants only: Children under 12 • Persons for whom the collection of fingerprints is physically impossible; • Sovereigns and other senior members of a royal family, Heads of State and members of the national Governments (with their official delegations and spouses) if they travel for official purposes. Amazing Wildlife Experience @ The MasaMarai

There are only certain places on the planet that allow you to get as close to wildlife as possible. These areas are considered to be treasure troves for those who love exploring different varieties of wildlife and their habitats. And if you are one of those individuals who absolutely love the idea of traveling to exotic locales just to view the wildlife, then here are some must visit destinations for you!

in Kenya

The Galapagos Islands in Ecuador

Located about 600 miles off the Ecuador coastline are the Galapagos Islands that have been practically left out from the rest of the world for years now. Extremely sheltered and secluded, thanks to the very few visitors they get, the islands have actually become homes to some really unique species of animals that cannot anywhere else in this part of the world. Think we are kidding? Visit the island to know we are not. You will be awestruck to see giant tortoises, tiny finches, swimming iguanas and even penguins. What’s more, the Galapagos Islands are home to these creatures who consider humans as visitors. So don’t be surprised if the animals don’t scurry away in fear upon seeing you. They will continue with their work, giving you plenty of scope to take some amazing pictures. And if you are lucky enough, you can pose alongside them (at your own risk of course)!

The KhaoSok National Park in Thailand

Opened in 1980, the KhaoSak National Park is considered to house the largest area of protected wildlife in the region and is home to one of the oldest rainforests in the world (dating back to millions of years ago). The park borders the KhaoSok River and contains several species of flora, fauna and wildlife. The best way to explore the park would be via a canoe ride that would take you along the KhaoSok River. And in addition to witnessing the amazing varieties of flora and fauna adorning the banks of the river, you can catch glimpses of some exotic tigers, leopards, elephants and bears if you are lucky enough.

Vancouver in Canada If you have a fascination for giant marine animals, namely killer whales, then Vancouver is the best places to catch up close and personal glimpses of these magnificent mammals. Each year, between the months of April and August, Vancouver is visited with several varieties of whales on their way back to the sea. The most popular visitors are Orcas, and it would be possible to spot at least one Orca pod during your visit which would most probably be a boat ride spanning from 35 hours. Expect to see at least one expert naturalist on board who would offer you tips on where to look and when. You can also opt for repeat trips until you spot these beautiful creatures.

Visit the MasaMarai to witness what can only be considered as one of the greatest spectacles in the world; the annual migration of millions of wildebeest across the MasaMarai and Serengeti plains. Watch as these creatures battle all odds to complete this journey that spans over thousands of kilometers, including rough weather, hungry lions and the last lap through crocodile infested waters! Apart from this, the Masai Mara Game Reserve is also home to the ‘Big Five’, considered to be the elephant, lion, buffalo, rhinoceros and the leopard. You can also catch glimpses of plenty of zebras, hippos, giraffes and several species of birds on the vast open plains and green hills.

Borneo Island in Malaysia

Borneo is the third largest island in the entire world and enjoys a common boundary between Indonesia, Malaysia and Brunei. The island is also a part of the famed Malay Peninsula, and is a natural home to the largest population of the nearly extinct species of orangutans. The island also houses over 400 different species of birds, with the list growing bigger every year as new species continue to arrive here every year and make the island their home. You can also catch glimpses of the famous Sumatran rhinoceros and plenty of Asian elephants. Sabah, a Malaysian state is located on the north end of the island and houses Mount Kinabalu which is open for climbers. The seas surrounding the mountain are treasure troves for avid snorkelers and scuba divers, and house countless varieties of marine life. A short boat ride would also take you to the nearby Selingan Island where you can actually witness sea turtles lay eggs on the beach, unmindful of visitors. The Sepilok Orang Utan Rehabilitation Center on the island also warrants a visit for the wildlife lover.

The Sea of Cortez in Mexico

Another place where you can catch some exotic marine life is the Sea of Cortez in Mexico which is located between the Mexican mainland and the Baja California peninsula. Considered to be a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the sea attracts several species of marine animals, including over 10 different whale species, dolphins, sea turtles, manta rays, whale sharks, sea lions and plenty of shorebirds. You can opt for boating, kayaking or snorkeling tours that would take you as near these animals as possible. TRADE PLUS InTALK with H.E. Ramon R. Jimenez, J.R. Philippines Secretary of Tourism, WHAT ARE THE KEY POINTS IN PROMOTING THE PHILIPPINES FOR ATF 2016? Playing host to the ASEAN Tourism Forum (ATF) for the fourth time is the perfect opportunity to show the new Philippines, which the international community alternatively calls, 'Asia's New Tiger', 'Asia's Bright Spot', and 'The Next Asian Miracle'. The Philippines that first played host to ATF in 1987 and subsequently in 1998 and 2006 has gone far, and has now entered a new era marked by strong growth and potential. Getting tourism recognized as one of the sectors at the top of the national economic agenda is certainly a huge feat. Today, Philippines' tourism industry is the 5th growth driver of the country's economy. Since the entry of a national leadership that believes in tourism as key to inclusive growth, it has become an

important pillar of this government administration's core objective of good governance. WHAT CAN THE BUYERS EXPECT DURING ATF 2016? AND HOW MANY BUYERS ARE YOU EXPECTING TO BE ATTENDING ATF 2016? The ATF 2016 is a major turning point for Philippine tourism by bringing focus on several 'treasure product' innovations to suit newer markets and target groups. The buyers are expected to participate in two full days of one-to-one appointments with industry international and local buyers, conduct business, and provide networking opportunities based on their specific business objectives. 400 international buyers from different parts of the world and 50 domestic buyers are expected to participate in this much awaited event in 2016.

H OW C O U L D T H E P H I L I P P I N ES CAPTURE MORE OF THE CRUISING MARKET, AS THIS MARKET HAS THE STRONGEST GROWTH? The Philippine Department of Tourism (PDOT) has geared up its promotion of the country as a destination for the once Europe-and-US-dominated lucrative cruise ship market, seeing strong interest from international cruise lines increasing their ports of call and expanding visits to more islands in the country. Our country's proximity to major cruise source markets like China, Japan and Hong Kong positions us at a competitive and comparative advantage in the AsiaPacific region. It is interesting to note that the number of cruise calls has increased dramatically from only 10 vessel calls in 2011 to a total of 54 recorded in 2014. And this year, there

H.E. Ramon R. Jimenez, J.R. are already 66 cruise calls scheduled. The ongoing development of the Cruise Tourism Development Strategy seeks to provide a blueprint for positioning the Philippines as a major cruise destination in Asia and the Pacific. HOW IS THE PHILIPPINES ABLE TO COLLABORATE BETTER WITH ASEAN TO CAPTURE MORE VISITORS? In addition to the Philippine participation in travel fairs in the ASEAN region, the Philippines continues its collaboration with ASEAN-related marketing programs and activities as well as product development and implementation of ASEAN programs geared towards a strengthened regional tourism industr y. Our lines of communication with other countries from ASEAN are always open for c o o p e ra t i o n a n d s h a r i n g v i t a l information for mutual growth. In the end, it is the common goal of achieving sustainable tourism development through a responsible ASEAN economic community. The Philippines has also initiated joint promotion of a particular local destination plus an ASEAN tourist attraction, as part of the larger goal of making ASEAN a single tourism destination. The country has likewise been actively involved in initiatives of the ASEAN Promotional Chapter on Tourism (APCT) in Australia and India. Among the continuing projects of APCT Australia are the production of a mini magazine on food, the management of Webjet, a digital platform to promote ASEAN destinations, the Intrepid project that invites bloggers to write about the adventure travel opportunities in the region and the National Tourism Industry Awards Night which gives distinction to National Tourism Organizations (NTOs).
