Why less tourists to India

There is no reason to be fully optimistic at this point as visa problems still continues. Airline tickets are also very high. It seems tourists prefer to take tours within the region due to high ticket costs and economic recession in their respective countries. Even tourists are a bit worried about security and potential terror attacks in Metro cities as reported in our National Press by Media repeatedly. Our tax part is also very high and that is negatively impacting the business. This makes our tour operators “not ready” as GST is yet to be announced and what will be tax component is not known to our tour operators. So they are not in a position to give a definitive Quote. They need to give quotes 3 to 5 months in advance. Even guide problem has further complicated the package part. In the civic governance, blame game continues and basic facilities have gone

down. Roads are bumpy, badly illuminated, road rage is common scene, congested roads this gives a very bad experience to tourists they go back and talk about it. It is the time that industry and government come together and find step by step solutions. Only working together we can bring out solutions. Lack of proper sanitation is one of India’s biggest problems and tourists often talk about it specially when they see at world heritage sites. Ministry of Tourism is doing its best but final outcome is not very impact oriented. Charter operation has become costly with high landing and handling charges. So the numbers have gone down. Cruise liners are coming to India now in more numbers but has visa problem (e-visa is not applicably for them). So we need to streamline our visa system first.

Tourism Scene in 2016 We should not be blindly optimistic about the outlook for India’s foreign tourist arrivals. We must talk about weak performance in tourist arrivals from our main source markets like Germany, Italy, France, Japan rather than Nepal, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Srilanka etc where positive growth is visible. Government’s statistical data till August suggest an improving trend but tour operators have not been benefited.

November - December, 2016

The tourists from neighboring countries hardly take the services of the tour operators or use 5 star property. The priority is to increase more up market traffic from USA, Canada, Japan, South Korea and Middle East. The consistent support provided by the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India to enhance investment in tourism sector is truly commendable. At least investors will visit India round the year and keep tourism growth continued. Integration of all states promoting tourism into the investment policy can bring infrastructure development all over the country. This is a very positive step. Such initiatives shows commitment to promote and develop cooperation among various overseas countries. It arises to encourage investments and sound economic development, boost exchanges and cooperation in culture, technology and tourism. The contemporary economic climate has varying effects on our main traffic generating markets including BRIC countries including Russia and South Africa. Also emerging markets highly reliant on financial position like Brazil, Mexico, Vietnam, Indonesia and Argentina which have not been doing well in economic arena. China is a good potential market but latest political developments will not increase

demand. The Media is usually the first channel for people to know about destination our India media has damaged the image. We need balanced reporting of events in India. Even elections to be held in states generate uncertainty. Agra the city of Taj specially Taj Mahal will have Mud cover gives a wrong signal. We need to issue an assurance on that Taj will be partially visible and not all covered. All these do not augur well. We lack professionalism. Even Safety and Cleanliness part people take with a pinch of salt and talk about it at all forums. Our media is mainly responsible for that. Air ticket cost have gone up and this has dampen the spirit for tourists who like to take long haul holiday destinations. Things are not coming the way we want. One or the other problems crop up and damage tourism interest. Natural Calamities, Terror threats, Bird Flu phobia and Dengue all these have put a blow on our image or as a holiday destination. An Escape to A story of love for nature

To subdue my inquisitive hunger of exploring places, this year in the month of April I travelled to one of the most untouched beauty on earth - The Spiti Valley. As one of my long cherished destination, Spiti turned out to be a virgin beauty with its post-card perfect backdrop. As our Delhi-Kalka mail from the Old Delhi railway station geared up its engine, my heart throbbed with excitement to cover the places of Himachal. Kalka in Haryana serves as the northern terminus to move passengers to Simla. So we boarded the famous toy train from Kalka station which through many twists and turns along the lush green laps of the mountains headed towards Simla. Other than Spiti we also covered Simla, Manali and Kullu; and Sangla and Kalpa which are some magnificent parts of the Kinnaur district. As the clock struck 6:30 in the morning, we started our journey towards Spiti from Kalpa by car which is a distance of about 197km. We loaded our car with enough food and water and packed ourselves with heavy woolens to head off towards Lahaul and Spiti - the land of

www.safariplus.co.in

chilled breeze. The roads towards Spiti are very undulating and our car was taking narrow turns through the laps of the mountains surrounded by scenic landscapes and wobbling terrains. Sometimes amidst the clouds we could see the snow clad top of the mountains from where Spiti was calling us. As we were moving towards Spiti, the texture of the mountains was changing and the high risers were becoming more dry and rocky. The breeze became spine chilling that we were bound to close all the windows of the car. This part of the earth did uphold to us a different story with less greenery and few plantations. The barren mountains with white snow strips, the valleys with apple tress blossoming with pink flowers under the pastel blue sky with splash of white clouds where creating a magical scenario. Lahaul and Spiti district popularly known as Spiti valley is a chilled desert of Himachal Pradesh cradling between India and Tibet located high in the Himalayas. As we planned to

SPITI

stay in Kaza, the capital of Spiti, so we crossed passes by Nako and Tabo. After entering Tabo, we could see the glimpse of Buddhist culture everywhere. The Tibetan flags waving with the chilled breeze and the Tibetan scribbling on the rocks where relaying the huge influence of the Tibetan culture on Spiti because of its proximity towards Tibet. With zero pollution, utmost peaceful surrounding, few houses, less population and innocence of the people there, Spiti is an untouched beauty far away from the strenuous city life. Finally we reached Kaza and our car halted in front of a petrol pump which is the last petrol pump of India from the north-eastern side just a few kilometers away from Tibet. There are less numbers of hotels in Kaza as this part of India has not yet come in the grasp of commercialization. One thing is must to mention

here that those who are fond of landscape photography, Spiti are an ideal place for them. The photos of Spiti do not require any filter as the natural colour of the place makes the photos best at its own. The next day we started our sightseeing trip in Kaza with a tour map in our hand. In

Kaza, there is lack of oxygen in the atmosphere because of less number of trees and thus I kept an inhaler with me in case of any emergency. Firstly we went to explore the wild division of Spiti which was famous for its snow leopards and blue sheep. Blue sheep were some rare species to us which are used for farming there and we were lucky enough to capture them with our binocular. Our next destination was the famous Kee monastery. Touch of Buddhism is there everywhere, starting from their culture, language and lifestyle. The monastery is situated at the top of a mountain and we can even see the roads leading towards Tibet. After fulfilling our yearn for Buddhist knowledge, we headed towards a place at a much higher altitude than Kaza where we can hunt for some stoned fossils. But the tragic part was that we couldn't reach there as the road towards it got blocked because of some shooting stones. With some incomplete wish we came back to our hotel and planned that there are more places in Spiti which needs to be explored the next time we come here. The next day we got prepared to leave Kaza with a heavy heart and promised ourselves to come here once more. This place is full of so many unexplored places that you need to come here with ample time.
