Putting The Best Foot Forward to have Positive Tourism Growth

We should not be blindly optimistic about the outlook for India’s foreign tourist arrivals. We must talk about weak performance in tourist arrivals from our main source markets like Germany, Italy, France, Japan rather than increased tourist arrivals from Nepal, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka etc. Government’s statistical data till April end suggests an increasing trend but tour operators have not been benefitted. The increased arrivals from neighboring countries hardly take the services of the tour operator’s or use our 5 Star property. The priority is to increase more upmarket traffic from USA, Canada, Japan, South Korea, China, Gulf and Middle East. The Consistent efforts of the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India to enhance infrastructure in the country with a holistic coverage of an entire circuit instead of individual tourist spots. PRASAD schemes is targeted toward the development of tourism infrastructure in and around famous religious and pilgrimage cities. The SWADESH DARSHAN scheme aims at the development of complete circuit on a specific theme. We understand that 56

projects covering 29 states/56 projects covering 29 States /UT’s worth Rs. 4,823.91 crores have been sanctioned under the SWADESH DARSHAN Scheme since its launch on 1st January 2015. 13 thematic circuits have been identified under which projects are sanctioned. 18 projects worth Rs. 488.45 crores have been sanctioned under the PRASAD Scheme since its launch on 1st January 2015. 25 religious cities have been identified under the scheme for development. Incredible India Tourist Helpline was launched on 8th February 2016. The helpline provides assistance and information to tourists in 12 major languages of the world including Hindi & English. The helpline is available 24x7 and can be accessed on the Toll-free Number 1800- 11-1363 or on a short code 1363. The languages covered are Hindi, English, Arabic, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish. At least, this initiative has created confidence in the minds of foreign tourists about Safety and Security part. The consistent support provided by the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India to enhance investment in tourism sector is truly commendable. At least investors will visit India round the year and keep tourism growth continued. Integration of all states promoting tourism into the investment policy can bring infrastructure development all over the country. This is a very positive step. Such initiatives shows

commitment to promote and develop cooperation among various overseas countries. It aims to encourage sound economic development and boost exchanges and cooperation in culture technology and tourism. The contemporary economic climate has varying effects on our main traffic generating markets including BRIC countries including Russia and South Africa. Emerging markets highly reliant on financial position like Brazil, Mexico, Vietnam, Indonesia, Argentina, China is a good potential market but latest political developments will not increase demand. The media is usually the first channel for people to know about destinations but for India media has damaged the image. Even tax status remained heavy nearly over 30% is the tax component. Hope GST is put into operation by July end tourism is put into lower slab. At least present the uncertainty puts our sales team overseas to give quotations. As tour operators when they go overseas for sales/ marketing purpose have to give Quotations 5/6 months in advance so they fail to give a competitive price and often lose business. Inspite of doing their b e st a n d s p e e d i n g fo r t u n e s o n promotional visits. All these do not augur well. The Ministry of Tourism has launched a ‘Welcome Card’ for distribution at immigration counters to tourists arriving at international airports. From 15th February 2017 the Ministry has

introduced free SIM Cards with preloaded talk time and data to all tourists arriving in India on the e-Tourist Visa. The e-Tourist Visa was introduced in September 2014 for 46 countries. This facility is now called e-Visa. It is now available for nationals of 161 countries and allows visits for business and medical treatment. The process of obtaining the e-Tourist Visa has been simplified significantly by addressing issues like more than one entry and longer lead period for applying for e-Visa. 10,79,696 tourists visited India on the e-Tourist Visa in 2016. All these efforts have shown positive results as indicated through international tourist arrivals. Foreign Tourist Arrivals (FTA) which were 6.97 million tourists in 2013, increased to 7.68 million in 2014, 8.03 million in 2015 and 8.89 million in 2016. FTA has grown with a CAGR of 8.45% against the international growth rate of 4 5%. Foreign Exchange Earnings (FEE) which were US$21.07 billion in 2015 and US$23.15 billion in 2016. FEE has grown with a CAGR of 7.86% against a contraction of 5% in international tourism receipts. FTA has registered a growth of 16.3% in January 2017 when compared to January 2016. This shows a positive trend and this trend will continue throughout the year. By Gour Kanjilal, Executive Director, IATO and Former, Dy. INSIGHT Train Museums will take you into the Future Starting July, rail museums at New Delhi and Chennai will not only provide a peek into the evolution of the Indian Railways but also showcase its glittering future through animated stories, short videos, interactive story boards and artists’ impressions. Visitors to rail museums will be allowed a glimpse of future train travel under the Nationwide Stakeholders Communication Programme,

considered a pet project of railways minister Suresh Prabhu. These would include trains that use magnets to levitate (Maglev), locomotives that shoot through tubes like peas in a pod, and 3D images of futuristic stations. Officials said the programme will be made available at other rail museums located in Mysore, Pune, Tiruchirapalli, Ghum, Howrah and Old Kanpur over the next three months. It would also find a place at A1 category stations, railway offices and social media websites such as YouTube. The initiative of the Indian Railways – which transports approximately 23

million passengers each day – aims at reaching out to its huge target a u d i e n c e comprising i nve sto rs , stakeholders, policymakers, passengers and other citizens. Fo r m e r ra i l way board member and rail enthusiast Vinoo Mathur agreed. “Museums are meant to safeguard traditional history,” he said. Nevertheless, all the 17 railway zones across the country have been instructed to prepare for the nationwide launch of the programme through the installation of kiosks, screens and hardware at rail museums. They have also been asked to

collaborate with private television channels to ensure that the central initiative reaches its intended target audience. While public sector undertaking Railtel has been tasked to set up technology networks, the public relations team at the railway board has been instructed to create and standardise a ‘One-IndiaOne-Content ’ programme that envisions Prabhu’s “Vision-2030/2050”.

Soon Mumbai will see its first-ever restaurant on the sea Shripriya Dalmia Thirani, 37 year old Delhi girl has won the most sought after bid to start the first ever floating restaurants and cruises next to two of Mumbai’s iconic sites – the Gateway of India and Girgaum Chowpatty. In a decision taken by the Mumbai Port Trust (MbPT) awarded the rights to start Mumbai’s first restaurant on the sea. The bid not only allows her to open a series of restaurants on the sea but also gives her rights to operate a cruise. Thirani’s ship is expected to hit the waters by early next year, millions of tourists who visit Mumbai both from inside India and abroad will for the first time be able to get a 360 degree view of the city’s sensational skyline while enjoying some of the world’s best cuisine. MbPT top brass says “Mumbai till now did not have any restaurants on the sea.

It was minister Nitin Gadkari’s idea to open up the eastern sea front of Mumbai for locals and foreigners to have an unique experience. We have two routes – one around Gateway of India and Girgaum Chowpatty which have now been awarded to Ms Thirani. Another route is being planned close to the Gateway whose tender is under process”. The MbPT tender says “the floating restaurant is intended to be a signature project in Mumbai to match Mumbai’s stature as the financial capital of India and leisure destination. MbPT through this tender process is seeking a professionally competent licensee to deliver an international experience”. MbPT officials say the license has been granted for a period of 15 years. The ship with multiple restaurants will have to have a minimum capacity of 125 seats.

Thirani will be able to operate the ship and its restaurants round the clock, subject to relevant permission from all statutory authorities. Mumbai is one of India’s most visited tourism hubs that welcome over 55 million domestic visitors and 5.10 million international visitors annually. Over 15 million people inhabit the city. The top destination visited in Mumbai is the Gateway of India. She said, “the tender is clear that people won’t be allowed to stay on board overnight and also does not give us permission to run a casino. The ship will docked in Chowpatty – a few miles into the sea. Tourists will be taken on small boats giving them a real feel of sailing on the sea.” The MbPT says the bidder will have to obtain a no objection certificate from the Indian Navy, Coast Guard and

Mumbai Police and Maharashtra Pollution Control Board for the purpose of operation of the restaurant ship.

Towards the end of the ad, Uchimura, who wears a hat and sunglasses takes out his walking stick to navigate CalleCrisologo, revealing he is blind. Philippines new Ad Campaign - Experience the Philippines “When you're with Filipinos, life is better.” This is the key message of the Department of Tourism's (DOT) newest campaign launched on 12th June, 2017, during the nationwide simultaneous flag-raising ceremonies. The minute-long clip entitled “Sights” captured the unique experiences of a Japanese retiree named M. Uchimura enjoying island hopping in the Hundred Islands of Pangasinan, dancing with the locals in Banaue Rice Terraces in Ifugao, riding an ATV in Paoay Sand Dunes, and enjoying his snacks on the cobblestoned CalleCrisologo in Vigan. “Here, you don't have to see the sun to discover radiance; you don't have to see colors to experience vibrance; you don't have to see smiles to know you are safe; you don't have to see to feel you are home,” says Uchimura in a voice over.

Towards the end of the ad, Uchimura, who wears a hat and sunglasses takes out his walking stick to navigate CalleCrisologo, revealing he is blind. According to Department of Tourism (DOT) Secretary Ms. Wanda Corazon Teo, the ad goes beyond featuring the country's top destinations but more importantly, it encourages tourist to experience the Philippines themselves to know how it is to be a Filipino. “We are shifting our focus in our promotional campaigns towards the u n i q u e ex p e r i e n c e s t h a t e a c h destinations could offer, Filipino hospitality, and security,” said Teo. “The basic element of “fun” remains, as it is truly the Filipinos who make the total tourism experience fulfilling and memorable. The heart and essence of the tourism thrust is the people,” she

said. This endearing ad depicts the true story of a retiree who may have been h a n d i ca p p e d b y b l i n d n e s s b u t experienced the intangible joy of Filipino hospitality during his memorable stay in

the Philippines. It is second of a series of advertisements that DOT will roll out in the coming months and will be shown international television channels and roadshows of the department.
