Good and Service Tax (GST) is probably effecting on your wallet. While most of the travelers keep away from number crunching, this GST has some direct implications on their travel Plan. Under the earlier indirect tax, regime the Hospitality industry, like every other sector in the Indian Economy pays different taxes such as VAT, service taxes, luxury tax. Now with the imposition of GST probably the biggest tax reform. GST impact on Hotel Booking – Under the GST rates announced, a luxury hotel stay will be charged up to 28%. However a relief comes for budget accommodation as hotels and guest house charging per day tariff. GST impact on eating out at Restaurant The tax slab for restaurants differ depending on whether they have AC or not. It got costlier in metropolis like Mumbai where the earlier tax rates include both VAT and services tax is an AC restaurant is 10.6%. Under GST customer will be levied 18% of taxes. GST impact on Flights and Train Ticket – Economy class air travel will become cheaper whereas business class will become dearer/ Similarity, Non AC travel in train will not be affected while ticket prices for AC train will go up

marginally. Mr. Jay Bhatia, Hon. National Treasurer of TAAI has views on GST impact along their plans to cope up with GST effect. He says “Positive impact is that there shall be transparency and double taxation shall be reduced. However the procedures and the laws set especially for the travel and tourism industry are not very clear. There is too much of confusion amongst the views of consultants, Government authorities in states and central as well. Reverse charge mechanism rules are too strict a n d s o m e t h i n g t h at w i l l c re ate confusion at all levels. For the travel trade the % of GST being charged on tickets, outbound tours, inbound tours etc, is also ambiguous. Direct invoicing by the airlines to the client is also something that shall duplicate and create confusion and process of claiming ITC shall become cumbersome and complicated.” He further added, “TAAI has undertaken training program and workshops along with our consultant GJM & Co across

India and have released FAQs and detailed queries are released by o u r G S T committee for our m e m b e rs . We also undertook a webcast which was attended by o v e r 1 0 0 0 participants across the country and GJM & Co along with our team ensured to revert to all quires. The procedural part and aspect of GST are too cumbersome. TAAI is in regular touch with the GST council of MOCA as well as MOT and have made pre as well as part GST implementation to the Government. Since 2 months TAAI GST council is ensuring to inform the government as well as the members about the difficulties faced and has recommended various solution to the Government. Representation has been made directly as well under the FAITH banner. We are hopeful that the Government shall assist in the matter so as to ensure growth and easy of doing business for the travel and tourism industry.”

Mr. Om Prakash, Director of In O R B I T Tours Pvt Ltd believes Minister of Tourism a n d t h e Tr a v e l Tr a d e associations have been working on this subject ever since our Independence. India's inbound tourism has been crawling at such a slow speed that in 70 years of existence of Ministry of To u r i s m a t C e n t r a l Government and supported by all state Tourism Ministries. India's annual inbound arrivals are around 5-6 million tourist. In spite of continuous efforts our infrastructure has not improved that can be compared even with neighboring c o u n t r i e s l i ke D u b a i , T h a i l a n d , Singapore. There facilities are not to the mark. Tourist budget is higher than our neighboring countries which make India as an expensive destination. The Hotel and Transportation cost are higher. The implementation of GST has hike the inbound cost. This will have a negative impact on the inbound arrivals. However the increase in volume can create massive opportunities for urban and rural employment. Travel and Tourism industry is ranked as 3rd largest employment generating industry.

The lower hills, on the other hand, are open to trekking throughout the year. SKIING AND ICE SKATING Winter is the time for fun and games! Large parts of Himachal Pradesh don a mantle of snow by about the middle of December. And this provides good opportunities for skiing. Though skiing slopes are available at many places in the state, good facilities have been developed at Manali and Narkanda (Shimla district). These two places get enough cushion even in bad snowfall years to allow good ski runs. At Manali, the Solang Nallah ski slopes are among the best in the world and allow runs over 3km. At Narkanda, too, good slopes are available for about three months in the year. Skiing in Himachal Pradesh, however, is not limited only to winter. The Beas, one of the most easily accessible rivers of the state, is now regularly run between Shamshi and Aut (both downstream from Kullu town). HANG GLIDING Of the various mountain ranges traversing Himachal Pradesh, the Dhauladhar is, perhaps, the most spectacular. The nearly 150km long range rises from the Kangra valley floor and at many places attains a height of over 5000mt. This makes the Dhauladhars one of the best launch-pads for the exciting sport of hang-gliding and parasailing. Billing (Kangra District) is one of the best sites for this adventure sport. The hang-gliding clubs in India are in Pune, New Delhi, Mumbai, Chandigarh, Shimla, Devlali and Bangalore. In Kangra, hang-gliders are seen in large numbers. Mountaineering has easy adaptability to p a ra g l i d i n g . T h e 1 5 0 0 k m l o n g Himalayan range attracts a large number of international gliders to the country. The spacious fields ploughed by the Tibetans, about 5km from the main village of Bir, serve as the landing ground for gliders. MOUNTAINEERING Himachal Pradesh is the land of mountains and snow. The state is traversed by four major ranges of the Himalayas. Of these, the Pir Panjal and the inner Himalayas are made up of many over6000 mt high peaks.

This is a critical time for Travel & Tourism and the 292 million people whose jobs depend on it. Future forecasts are strong, but with ongoing terrorism and environmental challenges, compounded by a world which is simultaneously ever more connected yet increasingly divided, now, more than ever, the sector needs to come together with one voice. Travel & Tourism needs to show not only its economic importance but also how it is committed to creating sustainable livelihoods, protecting nature and cultures, and asserting itself as a responsible and leading player in this fast-evolving world. ”

INTERNATIONAL NEWS Indian Arrivals to the Philippines growth up to 37% The Department of Tourism (DOT), Philippines, recorded a whopping growth of 37% in Indian arrivals to the Philippines in the month of May, 2017, in comparison to the same period last year. City of Manila, Pagsanjan, the heritage city of Cebu, Boracay, and Bohol are some of the most popular places among Indian travelers visiting the Philippines. Speaking about this growth, Mr. SanJeet, Tourism Attaché, Philippines Tourism Marketing Office India, says, “We are pleased to announce such a groundbreaking growth rate in Indian

arrivals to the Philippines. DOT engages travel trade partners in various awareness programmes and travel shows in order to maintain and sustain tourist traffic from the Indian market. In 2017, we aim to achieve the mark of 100,000 visitors to the Philippines from India.” India has now jumped to the 11th position among the list of top source markets for the Philippines. DOT is hopeful that by targeting Indian holiday planners through aggressive marketing initiatives, a double-digit growth for the year will be an achievable target.

South African Tourism has bagged yet another award for its adrenalinepumped holiday capabilities. Ms. Hanneli Slabber, Country Manager, South African Tourism India Office, said, “This is very rewarding for us because we have always known that Indian travelers and travel agents see South Africa as a wildlife capital but we are happy that they now also acknowledge our amazing adventure activities – we have been putting tremendous efforts into showcasing South Africa as an adventure destination and this is yet another clear sign that it is paying off.” The 11th Today's Traveler Awards recognized and honored outstanding performers in the corporate, hospitality, travel and entertainment industries. The destination boasts more than300 adventure activities across 3000 adventure operators including the world's highest bungee, shark-cage diving, big swing options, ziplining amidst beautiful scenery, kayaking and sky-diving. SA Tourism India is targeting over 104,000 travelers during 2017. Research among holiday-makers also indicates that adventure is one of the key experiences that Indian travelers seek when they decide to go to South Africa. “It has helped us capture the under 35 (years old) market and also strengthened our positioning in the family holidays market. This is because South Africa doesn't bar children from adventure activities simply on account of age. If technical requirements (height/ weight/ experience/ judgment or some such) make it logistically impossible for a child to undertake an activity, then it is fair to disallow them but in all other cases we allow them to sky-dive, bungee jump and dive with sharks or crocodiles with the protection of a cage. India, which is a familyoriented travel market, sees great value in this factor.” Slabber concludes.

Representation Company, we look beyond the narrow limiting horizon to anticipating and making the change. We're passionate about shaping the next generation of travel representation, and to MATATO we will be offering PR & Media and Marketing; operational and strategic solutions on a global scale to take MATATO to the next level worldwide.”
