Destination 2030: Global cities’ readiness for tourism growth Determining a city’s future readiness for tourism growth requires a holistic view that accounts not only for its current physical and natural assets, but also for its social capital and the impact of its policies. Whether a city is looking to grow its Travel & Tourism sector or manage rising visitor numbers, business and city leaders must balance all the dynamics that make up a city’s fabric. Findings from the World Travel & Tourism Council (“WTTC”) and JLL’s comprehensive index, Destination 2030: Global cities’ readiness for tourism growth (“Destination 2030”), address the question of what makes a city ready for Travel & Tourism growth at the WTTC Global Summit in Seville, Spain. Destination 2030 measures and categorizes 50 global gateway cities into one of five levels of “readiness” and provides actionable solutions to foster sustainable growth in tourism activity. “In today’s competitive environment, a holistic understanding of markets and indicators is more important than ever in shaping global investment strategy,” said JLL Global Hotels CEO Mark Wynne-Smith. “Cities with a comprehensive approach to

Travel & Tourism to ensure they are prepared for future growth are increasingly appealing from an investment standpoint.” The levels range from emerging to established market tourism hubs with varying levels of infrastructure. They also describe the current opportunities and challenges faced by the cities and provide a recommended path forward for building and maintaining tourism activity: Dawning Developers are cities with an emerging tourism infrastructure, slower tourism growth and lower visitor concentration but have room to grow. Examples include Manila, Moscow and Riyadh. Emerging Performers are cities with an emerging tourism infrastructure, growing tourism momentum and the start of increasing pressures related to tourism growth. Examples include Delhi, Istanbul and Mexico City. Balanced Dynamics are cities that are often financial hubs, with lower shares of leisure, compared to business travel but an established tourism infrastructure and potential for Travel & Tourism growth. Examples include Chicago, Munich and Tokyo. “Travel & Tourism can play a significant role in a city’s economy, boosting GDP and creating jobs,” said WTTC President & CEO, Gloria Guevara. “Managed well, a strong visitor economy can also help a destination to thrive, by bringing connectivity, fostering diversity, engendering hospitality and by creating a real sense of place for all who live, work and visit the city. With this novel framework, city planning authorities and legislators, investors and real estate developers, tourism organizations and Travel & Tourism companies can evaluate global cities’ readiness for future expected tourism volumes by 2030.”

A n c i e n t P u h a r, k n o w n a s Kaveripattinam (or P o o m p u h a r o r Kaveripumpattinam), was a flourishing port city capital of the early Chola kings in Tamilakkam Tamil Nadu. The city served as a great trading centre, where large ships docked to bring lovely merchandise to citizens from lands far afield as it was located near the mouth of the Kaveri River. This

KALIBANGAN This ancient city of Indus valley civilization is located on the bank of the dry bed of the Ghaggar in the Hanumangarh district of Rajasthan state. Known for being the site of the earliest ploughed agricultural field (ca. 2800 BC), the regular, and grid pattern of furrows used in this ancient field is a practice that is still used today. Archeologists found two mounds representing two phases of settlement:

the first between 3500 BC and 2500 BC and the second between 2500 BC and 1750 BC. Five streets in Kalibangan have been dug out and altars were found in an isolated structure, signifying that the place was probably used for religious intentions. Evidence points to an earthquake around 2600 BC that brought an end to the first settlement while the second settlement was believed to have been abandoned because of a dried up river.

LOTHAL Dating from 2400 BC, the lost city of Lothal is one of India's most important archaeological sites from the Indus Valley era can be found in the state of Gujarat. Recognized for being one of the world's earliest docks's it was an imperative and blooming trade centre in ancient times. In 1954, Lothal was discovered and further on, excavated between 1955 and 1960 by the Archeological Society of India (ASI).

Surkodata was occupied for a constant period of 400 years beside a large river 750 m wide that flowed past the northeastern side of the site. The first period lasted from 2100 BC - 1950 BC; the second phase, from 1950 BC - 1800 BC, brought a new wave of people, marked by new types of pottery and instruments. This phase ended with a large fire, bringing in the final phase, from 1800 BC - 1700 BC. TCEB thrives to generate over 5 Billion Baht for Thailand TCEB is moving forward to promote international conventions and exhibitions in Thailand in 2019, focusing on winning bids to host new major events to respond to the government's Thailand 4.0 Policy on national target industry. For 2019, 43 major events are secured, and it is expected that the projected number of MICE travellers of 133,435 will generate more than 5,025 billion baht of income for Thailand. Mr. Chiruit Isarangkun Na Ayuthaya, President of TCEB, disclosed that TCEB has continued to work hard to leverage Thailand's MICE industry, according to the government's Thailand 4.0 Policy that concentrates on driving the economy with technology, creativity and innovation. This year, there are 43 major events set to be held in Thailand by which TCEB has played a significant role in winning those bids. It is foreseen that the number of Thai and foreign MICE travellers will total 133,435 which can generate more than 5,025 billion baht of income. The winning bids comprise 26 international conventions, which can

China set to become Sports Events 365's Biggest B2B Market in 2019 attract up to 36,090 delegates and generate approximately 2,880 million baht of income, and 17 international exhibitions with the number of visitors expected at 97,349 and an estimated income of over 2,145 million baht. “Considering large-scale international conventions and trade shows receiving support from TCEB in 2019, it is obvious that certain events are interesting and contributing to the growth and development of MICE industry, as well as target industries stipulated by the government's 4.0 Policy, ranging from agriculture, food and pharmaceuticals, energy to new technology. All of which will not only contribute to economic growth, but also emphasise the potentiality of Thailand as the number 1 destination for conventions and exhibitions in ASEAN” said Mr. Chiruit.

With a rapid growth in demand from sporting enthusiasts, China is on track to become Sports Events 365's largest B2B market in 2019. Sports Events 365, a leading force in tickets for sporting events of global interest, expects sales in China to top the $2 million mark this year. The rapid growth of the Chinese market was given a further boost recently with the launching of a Cantonese language ser vice in c o o p e r a t i o n w i t h Yo z a To u r International Guangzhou for purchasing tickets on Sports Events 365’s website. Cantonese is China’s second most widely used language and spoken primarily in the southern part of the world’s most populous country. destination-based search engine. “There is great interest of Chinese sporting fans in football, primarily in the UK, Italy and Spain, as well as interest in basketball, with most interest in the NBA in the US,” says Sefi Donner, founder and CEO of Sports Events 365. He adds that Chinese fans have recently strengthened their demand for La Liga football matches, after China’s Wu Lei joined RCD Espanyol in January, becoming the first Chinese player in Spain’s premier league. Sports Events 365 is offering its Chinese sports enthusiasts a chance to attend an Espanyol training and meet Wu Lei. “How is Technology changing the outgoing Sports Travel business?” The company also initiated activity on a B2B basis with 20 Chinese tourism and sports tourism companies for the direct purchase of tickets on a permanent basis.

Nothing excites me more than walking into a destination unknown with no plan or itinerary in mind but walking out satisfied and enriched with adventure that has fulfilled my soul. Taking you all to a different world of the evergreen Thailand – The Land of Smiles and rightfully so. PHUKET My journey begins at the largest island of Thailand, Phuket. When the sun goes down Phuket awakens and roars with its bustling nightlife and streets dotted with beer cafes, food arenas and shopping outlets comes alive. Well, these reasons are good enough to pick Phuket as a starting point but the fact that Phuket is by far the easiest and the best moderating point of transfers to most scenic and beautiful islands of Thailand cannot be overlooked at all. KO PHI PHI DON AND KO PHI PHI LE Proceed to Rasadda Pier and board your speed board to Ko Phi Phi Don, the main island of Ko Phi Phi archipelago filled with amazing white sand beaches and surrounded by limestone cliffs. Well, time to exercise those legs because the island has banned motor vehicles which has made this island completely pollution free but there are hand driven carts where if required luggage's could be carried to and from the accommodation for a cost. Words would fail to describe the beauty of this island which has rustic restaurants, the sunrise and sunset points and narrow alleys which leads up to best of the accommodations. This island will leave you not only awestruck with the best of

You are blessed in Ko lanta, be it choosing a hammock with beer in hand or a table perched on a hill overlooking the beaches where you can witness what you might call the best sunset of your life or riding your motorbike in those flowery roads leading to the best of small cafes which will serve you beer cocktails inside a coconut shell or sunbathing and much more. There is never a dull moment here. Get transported to an age old era in the old town of Ko Lanta where the restaurants are decorated with huge blocks of wooden furniture and they are erected up above on water. Sitting in one of the restaurants on the colorful seats or bean bags or using the swings which will swing you right till out into the water and gulping down beer and delicious seafood watching sun go down painting the whole sky in its various hues is possibly my best dream come true scene in this gorgeous island. KO KRADAN and KO MUK Get set for next islands Ko Kradan and Ko Muk. I am an island person and would love to stay put up in an island that is absolutely slow and possibly has nothing but beauty, charm and tranquility to offer. I would say Ko Kradan (You feel like you own the entire island all to yourself) and Ko Muk (White sandy paradise like beach)are such islands and only if you have such passionate penetrating love for island should you stay here or even a day trip should be good enough. The best spot in Ko Muk is the emerald cave and if you are brave enough to swim in the beach that the cave opens up to then you can consider yourselves blessed. KRABI

nature and scrumptious seafood but also you will end up panting for breadth in those wild beach parties native to the island and if you stay at the hotels put up near the beach then be sure that you will kept awake as the loud music continues to bash till wee hours. It would be a crime if you stay at Ko Phi Phi Don and do not venture to Ko Phi Phi Le. There are numerous long tail boats waiting to take you there from Tonsai pier. Long sharp vertical hanging cliffs filled with greenery and turquoise waters is a rare and beautiful combination but this is exactly what you see in Le and it is time to take a look at the stunning coral and colorful marine life with your snorkel. There are various bays in and around Le like Maya Bay, Sama bay, Palong Bay, Pi Leh Bay and Viking Cave and it is up to you to decide which suits you the best. KO LANTA Let's move on to the second of my handpicked island Ko Lanta by means of ferries or speedboats. You can board from Tonsai Pier in Phi Phi Don and reach Saladan Pier in Ko Lanta where you will be transported amidst beautiful beaches, tropical forests and huge landscapes bordering the place. Ko Lanta boasts various beaches and the toughest decision you have to make here comprises of picking up a beach and search for stay up there as you will soon be hounded with numerous options. Long beach is the most popular beaches in Ko Lanta to stay and dine as well.

After soaking up the feeling of being a castaway nomad in these islands it is now time to go to one of the popular islands of Thailand, Krabi. Back to civilization Krabi offered to me a lot more of activities and I am definitely in love with Krabi. Ao Nang is definitely the accommodation stretch in Krabi with good accessibility of anything and everything with decent though nit crazy party scene. Renting a two wheeler will help covering Krabi better and can visit Tiger Temple, hot springs, emerald pool and much more. Island hopping is best done from Krabi and the 4 and 7 island tours with lunch included are best to choose from and would be economic too. There is also a possibility of hiring a boat privately which will give you flexibility to hang around the islands longer without any pressure of heading back soon. Either ways do not hesitate to haggle for best prices. Railay beach is absolutely adorable but a little crowded. So a little further is Tonsai Beach which is more picturesque with a couple of bars tucked in jungle but that's pretty much it. It's time to return back to Phuket to finish off where this memorable journey began. No man or woman is an island – They said but I say a visit to these islands in Thailand makes you the man or the woman that you are meant to be.
