Some positive news from around the world Greece is gearing up to reopen to international travellers on May 15

Time to revive tourism industry and for cross-border friendships to rekindle - safely

Greece has made plans as to how the beaches will operate henceforth. Beaches of Greece will be operating under new rules and regulations in tune with COVID-19 measures. So if you are planning to enter Greece this summer for a holiday, here are some things that you should know beforehand. The good news is that the country has listed 30 countries, whose citizens are not required to quarantine if they can provide a COVID-19 negative report of a test that was taken not more than 72 hours before departure. They may also furnish vaccine certificates if they have been vaccinated.

The European Union’s executive has recommended easing COVID-19 travel restrictions next month to let foreign travellers from more countries enter the bloc, hoping to boost the stricken tourism industry this summer. Under current restrictions, people from only seven countries, including Australia and Singapore, can enter the EU on holiday, regardless of whether they have been vaccinated but subject to tests or quarantine. "Time to revive tourism industry and for cross-border friendships to rekindle - safely," Commission President Ursula von der Leyen wrote on Twitter.

Israel to welcome vaccinated visitors in May 2021

Austria to Permit Travel From May 19 to EU/Schengen Countries

The country had closed its doors to international tourists last year, during the beginning of the pandemic. But now, Israel is planning to welcome visitors back, because it has controlled the spread of the virus. The only condition is, they must be vaccinated. The tourism minister has said that tourists who will arrive in May, will join “approved bus tours”, since “groups are easy to monitor as they have a schedule that is organised and we know where they are at every time and place”.

Austria’s authorities have announced their plans to reopen and ease their imposed COVID-19 preventive measures starting from May 19 in an effort to help the country recover from the devastating situation caused by the Coronavirus pandemic. The announcement has been confirmed by Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz, adding that other sectors such as tourism, sports and restaurants will also resume their work, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports. STORY

The Man Behind the Mission In the last one decade, Andaman and Nicobar Islands has emerged as a preferred holiday destination for vacation seekers in India and abroad giving tough competition to domestic destinations and several international destinations. But who are the people behind this huge industry who ensure that the tourism of the islands runs smoothly like well-oiled machinery? Ask any island stakeholder and the one name that stands out is that of the famously dynamic Shri M Vinod. Shri M Vinod is a son of the soil of the Andaman Islands having been born and raised there. After completing his education, instead of chasing the corporate dream in mainland India or abroad for that matter, Shri Vinod started his own travel agency with a vision to transform the islands into a tourism paradise. What makes it remarkable is the fact that a rare few dared to take this road back in the days when tourism had not boomed in the islands. He achieved success in his travel agency yet his dreams could not be confined by the walls of his office. His dream for Andamans needed him to do more for the industry than run a business. Without a thought, with a few industry friends, he spearheaded the formation of Andaman Association of Tour Operators, famously known by its acronym AATO, the premier tourism representative of Andamans today. AATO, with Shri Vinod’s guidance, has worked in tandem with IATO, TAAI, IATTE to name a few tourism bodies and participates annually in all leading tourism events including OTM, SATTE and TTF. Shri Vinod having a strong understanding and experience in the field of tourism at the grass-root level has time and again echoed the voices of the many small stakeholders that often cannot reach the offices of the high in command. From cab drivers to hoteliers, Shri Vinod has heard and represented every

Vadodara The city that is believed to have been named after The Banyan Tree, holds rich art, architecture, history and culture in its cupped and caring hands. Vat-Vriksha, the Banyan Tree gave the name to the city and it came to be known as Baroda or Vadodara. The third-largest city in the state of Gujarat, perched on the banks of River Vishwamitri, is a very important economic hub with many large-scale industries having sprouted and flourished here. I take you on a “just-a-day” tour of this magnificent city. Though Vadodara can not be capsuled in just one day, I club the highlights together for those who are short on time. First, the architecture, history and art because all of this comes together in Vadodara as an all-in-one package! The Mesmerising Laxmi Vilas Palace Start your day with a hearty breakfast and head straight to the Laxmi Vilas Palace. Rows of flowers- lilac-pink-orange, greens of the golf course and splendour of the Majestic Palace welcome the wide-eyed curious traveller in you. A short driveway later, the ticket counter would fall to your left. The ticket fee includes an audio guide service and you may choose the language that you are most comfortable in. The audio guide is thorough and detailed and easy to comprehend and goes at a slow pace allowing you ample time to savour the sights that delight your visual senses. The tour begins at the rear garden of the Palace, the vast expanses and the life-size statues that adorn this beautifully manicured Italian garden with its pretty water fountains are sure to hold your gaze for long. But just as you turn around to have a look at the palace, your jaw would drop with a gasp! The

Palace is a magnificent Indo-Saracenic wonder which is the largest private home to be built in those times, an astounding four times the size of the Buckingham Palace. The fine architecture against the azure skies is a picture postcard that you would soon walk into. I am not giving details of the artefacts on display because 1. There are way too many for anyone to remember and 2. It kills the anticipation of visiting a museum. Click away to your heart’s content and just follow the location numbers that your audio guide takes you through. Once inside, you would be taken through chambers upon chambers filled with artefacts, weapons, paintings and portraits from the private collection of the erstwhile Maratha rulers of Vadodara, who still reside in a section of the Palace. There are paintings galore, weaponry section stashed with the finest of the swords and shields of the time, statues so lifelike that they might just wink at you and make you turn around for a second look and chandeliers so exquisite that you might get dizzy looking up marvelling at them! While the insides of the museum give you a glimpse of the opulence,

eminence and glory of the Gaekwads of Baroda, the outdoors would keep you enthralled with piece after piece de resistance! The statues of beasts and wildlife placed all over the gardens and the Golf Course make for a very interesting around-thepalace tour. This is where the King’s throne was, this is where the Royalty assembled, here the musicians enthralled their audience and that’s where the dancers pirouetted, portraits of the British teachers who taught the young princes and princesses also adorn the walls of this hall that has seen many distinguished gatherings, we are inside the magnificent Durbar Hall. Adorned with Belgian stained glass windows that depict beautiful paintings, with a large Royal Regalia on the tiled floor, and busts of the various Maharajas who ruled over Vadodara displayed along the walls, this hall has witnessed many events and cultural shows where eminent musicians and artists performed. As I said, the Palace is sure to hold you in awe. The audio guide tour will now guide you toward to facade again and this is where

a masterpiece awaits your attention. This is a Venetian Ceramic Mosaic that is said to depict the joyous embrace of Lord Ram and Devi Sita after she emerged from the Agnipariksha. This work of art took 18 months to be meticulously and painstakingly put together. The tour of the Laxmi Vilas Palace ends here and one must return the audio guide back to the office where it was received from. Rendezvous with Raja Ravi Varma at Maharaja Fateh Singh Museum After having an all-engaging and fascinating tour of The Laxmi Niwas Palace museum, I was sure nothing else can now hold me in awe anymore; might hold my attention for a while, yes, but not leave me bewitched for sure. But oh, I was wrong, so wrong; for The Maharaja Fateh Singh Museum can keep an art aficionado for hours in there with so many chambers filled with so many originals, be it the sculptures or the paintings. I feel this museum requires repeat visits to properly soak in all the treasure that it showcases. This is where my eyes met an original Raja Ravi Varma for the first time. And painting after painting I kept stepping back to the times when these paintings were commissioned at the behest of Maharaja Sir Sayajirao Gaekwad III of Vadodara. There are the originals from Indian Mythology for which Raja Ravi Varma was known and then there are so many portraits of members of the Royal Family. The intricacy and detail in each painting is beyond

anything that you might have seen elsewhere. This building was constructed as a school for the Maharaja’s children and had a tiny toy train too, which in its time ran on its specially fixed rails all across the vast compound that surrounds the museum building. The World’s smallest locomotive engine of this train can be seen just near the main entrance of the museum, carefully parked in a glass enclosure. This museum is a paradise for art connoisseurs. There are more than 30 original works of Raja Ravi Verma, besides other breathtaking paintings by other renowned artists. A treasure trove of marble and bronze statues, busts and exquisite vases grace the two floors here. Another artist whose remarkable work is displayed in abundance is the Italian artist Fellicci, who too was commissioned by the Maharaja for creating various art pieces that can now be seen in this museum. An Oriental gallery showcases ornate vases, exclusive toys and other artefacts from China and Japan. Photography is prohibited inside the museum complex. All this intense museum hopping is sure to make one hungry, and a Gujarati thali would just be the saviour. The Sayaji Bagh A one day trip to Baroda has to be centred around the art and architecture of this beautiful city. Post lunch, I recommend you visit The Vadodara Museum and Picture Gallery which is located within the 100 acres of the largest garden of western India - Sayaji Bagh! This architectural marvel is designed on the lines of London’s

Science Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum. Reflection of Maharaja’s penchant for all things art can be seen here as well with artefacts related to Geology, Archaeology and Natural History displayed in the various halls, besides many other pieces of art from the personal collection of the Maharaja himself. The evening can then be spent in the magnificent garden which houses more than 98 species of trees and also has a majestic floral clock. A day well spent and leaving you longing for more - that’s an ideal day in Vadodara. Do not forget to pick up some lip-smacking farsaans and Gujarati snacks from here for munching on later and reminiscing your Baroda trip. I would ideally love to end a day like that with some Sev Usal and loads of Aamras!

Now in its 28th year, ATM 2021 will go-ahead at the Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC) on Sunday 16 to Wednesday 19 May, as final preparations are being put in place. “The theme of this year's show is 'A new dawn for travel and tourism' and the spotlight will be focused on the very latest 'COVID' news from around the world – vaccine rollouts, the current state of the industry and more importantly, what the future holds,” said Claude Blanc, Portfolio Director, WTM& IBTM Portfolios. ATM 2021 features 67 conference sessions with over 145 local, regional and international speakers overall. Onsite, there is a Global Stage which will include a hotel industry summit, dedicated buyer forums for Saudi Arabia and China, an International Tourism & Investment Conference (ITIC), as well as an aviation panel and a special session on Gulf-Israeli ties. Other features this year will include Travel Forward at ATM, which has world-class technology experts, providing industryleading insights about the latest technologies and trends that will undoubtedly shape the future of travel and tourism. A total of 62 countries are being represented on the exhibition floor this year such as the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Israel, Germany, Cyprus, Egypt, Indonesia, Malaysia, South Korea, the Maldives, the Philippines, Thailand, Mexico and the US. “This underscores the importance of ATM, connecting destinations with their source markets,” said Danielle Curtis, Exhibition Director Middle East, Arabian Travel Market. ATM 2021 will be held at the Dubai World Trade Centre, spread across nine halls. Consistent with the existing density restrictions and social distancing guidelines and regulations, there will be 11,000 people in the halls at any given time. The event will once again play an integral role in Arabian Travel This year, for the first time in ATM history, a new hybrid format will mean a virtual ATM running a week later to complement

and reach a wider audience than ever before. ATM Virtual, which made its debut last year, proved to be a resounding success attracting 12,000 online attendees from 140 countries. “Due to Dubai's commitment to maintaining the highest standards of health and safety and its effective citywide management of the pandemic, it was awarded a 'Safe Travels' stamp from the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC),” added Curtis. Dubai is one of the safest cities in the world to visit with a wide range of precautionary measures in place to ensure the safety of tourists at every stage and touchpoint of their travel journey, from arrival to departure. Over 10.6 million doses have already been administered in the UAE, which is also a major achievement. ATM 2021's strategic partners include Dubai's Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (Dubai Tourism) as Destination Partner, Emaar Hospitality Group as Official Hotel Partner, Emirates as Official Airline Partner and The Vision as Official Destination Management Partner. Issam Kazim, Chief Executive Officer of Dubai Corporation for Tourism and Commerce Marketing (Dubai Tourism) commented: “As Dubai plays host to the ATM during this challenging period, it is testament to the city's tireless efforts in leading the restart of global tourism, inspired and guided by our visionary leadership with the goal of positioning Dubai as one of the world's safest destinations. It is noteworthy that through a proven framework for welcoming back visitors safely and ensuring they enjoy a well-rounded destination experience, as well as our ability to transform challenges into opportunities, Dubai has demonstrated a successful model for recovery of the international travel and tourism sector. With industry professionals from around the world set to converge in the city this month, we look forward to sharing Dubai's positive outlook during ATM 2021, while emphasising how crucial it is to always keep the health and safety of travellers at the top of the agenda to ensure tourism growth.”

MICE Indian carriers hit turbulence in April 2021 ICRA: Decline in domestic passenger traffic as infection spikes For April 2021, domestic passenger traffic is estimated at ~55-56 lakh, implying a sequential decline of ~29% compared to ~78.2 lakh in March 2021. With this, the domestic passenger traffic has reached lower than the October 2020 levels. The airlines’ capacity for April 2021 was lower by ~15% compared to March 2021 (~60,300 departures, against ~71,300 departures in March 2021), indicating the declining demand scenario stemming from averseness of consumers to travel due to the rise in Covid-19 infections. It is to be noted that domestic airline operations were completely ceased during April 2020 due to the nationwide lockdown owing to the Covid-19 pandemic. According to Ms. Kinjal Shah, Vice President & Co-Group Head, ICRA: “The number of flights departing has also gradually declined from February 2021 onwards, with the average daily departures close to~2,000 in April 2021, down from ~2,300 in March 2021 and February 2021. The average number of passengers per flight during April 2021 was 93, against an average of 109 passengers per flight in March 2021.” The gradual decline depicts the stress on demand, driven largely by the second wave of

April 2021 witnessed a substantial ~29% sequential decline in domestic passenger traffic, indicating averseness of consumers to travel due to the spike in infections · The ATF prices in April 2021 were higher by 59.8% on a YoY basis, and in May 2021, prices have been substantially higher by 103.4% on a YoY basis

been ~34 lakh for the period May 07, 2020 to April 30, 2021. For April 2021, international passenger traffic for Indian carriers under the VBM was estimated at ~3.6 lakh, a sequential decline of ~21%. In April 2021, many countries like the US, the UK, Singapore, Kuwait, France, Canada, Australia, Iran, Indonesia and the UAE, which had ATB arrangements or under the VBM, have banned flights from India citing the increasing coronavirus cases. The international operations through VBM or the ATB route were the only source of revenue for airlines and the cancellation of flights by the destination countries will further impact the beleaguered domestic carriers. In addition, following the pandemic, crude oil prices declined materially – reaching a low of ~US$19/ barrel in April 2020, thus leading to a decline in aviation turbine fuel (ATF) prices. However, the crude oil prices have increased gradually since then, and currently ranges at around US$65/ barrel. Consequently, the ATF prices increased sequentially by 24.1% in July 2020 and by 4.2% in August 2020. However, it declined sequentially by 3.4% in September 2020 and by 5.6% in October

The average number of passengers per flight during April 2021 was 93, against an average of 109 passengers per flight in March 2021.” The gradual decline depicts the stress on demand, driven largely by the second wave of

been ~34 lakh for the period May 07, 2020 to April 30, 2021.
