GANDIKOTA CANYON The Grand Canyon of Gandikota is one of the most unusual place in India. These spectacular canyons lie in a small village of Kadapa district in Andhra Pradesh. The gorges of Gandikota are formed between the Erramala range of hills, also known as Gandikota hills and the river Pennar that flows at its foot. The word gandi in Gandikota is telugu word for gorge and Kota means fort. This untouched and unexplored place is a weekend getaway from Bengaluru and Hyderabad. The Disappearing Temple Shree Stambheshwar Mahadev Best way to explore any place is to travel by road. Gujarat, being a state blessed with a diverse and very interesting topography has so much to offer. There are the coastlines, the islands, the jungles, the hill-stations, cities and towns, villages and hamlets, the modern and the heritage, dinosaur fossils and even a desert. On one of our road trips across Gujarat, we decided to visit a hidden wonder on the Bay of Cambay. Hidden, in the true sense of the word!! Read on… Reaching there: Shree Stambheshwar Mahadev Mandir in Kavi Kamboi, Jambusar. A dizzying-tizzying narrow road, snaking its way through the hamlets of Gujarat lead us to this marvel. As we approached the destination, lo and behold there stood in front of our eyes in the water of Bay of Cambay a beautiful wall-less orange and white temple that looked like a gazebo from afar. The Sight and the Site: There were quite a few visitors here with lots of cars parked around the single road that ends abruptly next to the open land around the temple. The walkway has a shed over it to protect the devotees from the harsh seasun, and the locals set-up there tiny market on this walkway. Many “holy” symbols such as replicas of the temple, multimetal rings, vastu-fengshuiesque tortoises, pyramids, evil eyes, charms and talismans, small Shiva Lingas in different stones for the home-temples, pictures of Gods and of course plastic baskets full of Pooja pre-requisites like Flowers, Betel, Incense sticks, Prasad etc are all sold here. Beyond the walkway where the temple stands, on the right is a slightly higher temple built for Shiva's trusted Gate Guardian and “transporter” Nandi the bull. This temple remains unaffected by the tides. The main Shiva Linga stands in the sanctum sanctorum which is a couple of steps down from the main land. This probably is the simplest Shiva temple we have seen so far with nothing except the Shiva Linga and brick tiled floor with iron rails and a wrought iron gate. The gates are opened only when the tide is fully receded revealing the entire length of the Shiva linga. You may step down to pay your respects and perform your Parikrama. People from across faiths can be seen here, such is the following of this vanishing temple. The legend: It is believed that Lord

demon as Tarakasura was a staunch devotee of Lord Shiva. During this remorseful and guilt ridden time he met Lord Vishnu to help him find a way to absolve himself of the sin he believed he committed. Lord Vishnu comforted Lord Kartikeya by first making him understand that the act he deems a sin was actually a service to the mankind as Tarakasura was known to torment the people and secondly by advising him to make a temple for Lord Shiva and by worshipping him everyday. Hence came the Stambheshwar Mahadev Mandir into existence. The Vanishing Act: One must spend a whole day here to witness the spectacle of the game of “now you see me” and “now you don't”. A group of pals, family, batchmates, anyone and you know how to spend the day frolicking and indulging your taste buds while witnessing the submerging-emerging act of the orange and white temple. What else to do: The locale is quite picturesque and photographers can delight in creating wondrous frames around here. The Bay is a vast expanse of bluish grey haze with silhouettes of the settlements across the bay visible from this end. Seagulls and other marine feathered friends hover around diving sometimes to catch a stray fish and sometimes to catch the chips that people fling at them. The entire coastline next to the temple buzzes with activity during low tides - there are pony rides, pony carts, tiny versions of ferris wheels and camel rides for amusement. A few ATVs also are available for the adventure seekers. Local fishermen offer boat rides too. What to eat: The Prasad offered here is sweetened mawa which, believe us, tastes divine! There are hand carts besides the road that leads to the temple offering street foods like Pav Bhaji, Bhel, Samosa, different types of farsaans and Kutchi Dabeli too. Thirst quenchers come in the form of Nimbu Sharbat (Lemonade), local cold drinks (if you have ever had a Kanche wala sharbat while growing up you would know) and the array of cold drinks that the MNCs brought to India.

Maharashtra Government plans an Events Board to attract events, MICE and Facilitate Industry s Growth Maharashtra Tourism is forming an events board to facilitate incentives for events and MICE as well as to attract global events to Maharashtra. The Government is focussing on forming an events board as a platform for everyone to have an interaction with the government, suggest ways to go ahead and how we can actually incentivize this industry, how do we re-build this industry, which has been adversely affected by the pandemic. In an event Mr. Aaditya Thackeray, Minister for Tourism, Environment and Protocol, Government of Maharashtra, shred what had been done for the allied hospitality industry, the Minister revealed that in the last three months, the number of licenses required by the hospitality sector had been reduced from 70 to 10, number of application forms from 70 to eight and from needing 15 NOCs, new establishments now only need nine selfcertifications. “We have given the status of ‘industry’ to the hospitality sector, which was long-pending – for almost 30 years. My age by now,” he quipped. “I do hope that working together we could make similar policy changes for the event industry too”, he confirmed. ‘Want to make tourism department an enabler’ - Thackeray underlined that for the first time, a budget of Rs.1,200 crore had been allocated to the sector in March 2020. The government had subsequently announced a 67% reduction in development spends across the board due to the pandemic. “More than micro-managing, I want to make this department an enabler. It’s not our job to be micromanaging hotels or

restaurants or going into creating tourist destinations. If you look at markets like the UK or New Zealand or many others, the tourism departments have been enablers for the individual citizens and businesses to demonstrate their talent and ability on a world scale. And to welcome people from the world over to their place,” explained Thackeray. #MissionBeginAgain: Asked about reopening of the tourism and event industries which have been badly impacted by the Covid19 pandemic and lockdown, the Minister emphasized the need for a cautious approach. Minster replied, “Many states opened up in a hurry and had to close down most of the things they opened up. What we are trying to do with ‘Mission Begin Again’ is open up in a staggered, painfully slow and careful manner, but not close down on anything that we’ve opened up. Because opening up and closing down again would be more damaging to any industry,” noted Thackeray. “I want events to happen in Maharashtra. I want MICE to grow. Be it music concerts, live events, live theatre, live shows, there are multiple things that EEMA can host. I want it to be a vibrant state, which is precisely why I brought in the 24/7 enabling act,” the Minister stated. “So, we will open up. The thing is events like concerts cannot be held with just 50 people. And some of the performers – including politicians, who are performers – have to speak over video conferencing to reach larger audiences. But I am hoping we can get through this very soon,” surmised Thackeray. www.safariplus.co.in 8

Koh Lanta Thailand's most sustainable destination Little has changed on Koh Lanta since the Thai Island quietly started to welcome guests three decades ago. Beaches without footprints still sprawl beneath rainforest canopies, the calls of wild macaques echo through dense mangroves and only moments from the shore shoals of tropical fish flit amongst coral reef. Life indeed moves at a gentler pace on an island that has so far avoided the throngs of tourists that have long since taken over many of the country's other resort destinations. While mainland Krabi starts to creak under the burden of increasing arrivals and Phuket to the west has long been lost to the masses, Koh Lanta still offers travellers a truly authentic experience amid some of Thailand's best-kept natural attractions. Like many of the world's unspoiled natural havens, however, byproducts of modern life have placed an inevitable strain on the environment. In response to the growing threat of environmental degradation - both on land and at sea organisations and individuals are fighting back to ensure Koh Lanta keeps its paradisal appeal for generations to come. "The island was isolated when I first visited about 30 years ago -there were no cars, no roads, even," says Anurat Tiyaphorn, owner of Pimalai Resort & Spa, Koh Lanta’s first five-star resort. "Tourists nowadays are looking for that same experience in a place where nature is preserved. We are just one of many on the island working towards preserving this natural beauty." With its deep-rooted relationship with the island and prime location on legendary Kantiang Beach, Pimalai is ideally situated to champion marine conservation efforts. The resort, in association with Scubafish Dive Centre and Lanta Diver, conducts clownfish release and coral propagation programmes around idyllic offshore islands of Koh Haa and Koh Rok. This includes a cycle of moving living rocks to make a base for the newly propagated corals in the nursery. Once developed, the corals are then relocated and the process begins again, according to Lanta Diver's Naiyana Leethongdee. “It feels like there's more environmentally-friendly thinking across the island than ever before," she says, adding that the company encourages visitors to join them on the propagation

dives and learn more about how to conserve the island's aquaculture. Back on dry land, guests are also invited to join the Pimalai team, local residents and fellow business owners on their monthly cleanup of Kantiang Beach, which ensures one of the island’s star attractions remains pristine. The “Community Trash Free Days” take place on the second Wednesday of each month. Public cleanups extend beyond the beach, however, to the island’s mangroves. Tucked away in the island’s interior, these bucolic waterways are home to unique flora and fauna. Organised boat tours of the mangrove help generate income and also fund the preservation of this rich ecosystem. Much of the rubbish recovered from these areas is put to good use. One organisation, in particular, recycles non-biodegradable materials into intricate handicraft products such as bags and bracelets. In addition to the standalone store located in Koh Lanta’s Old Town, the items are available to buy at Pimalai. “My friends and I got the idea to set up this store after seeing how much plastic waste there is on Koh Lanta,” explains ecoentrepreneur Aumpa Arthan. “So we came up with the idea to recycle used milk cartons, plastic bottles and rice sacks into new products. “We’ve received great feedback from the tourists who support us buying these products.” Such socially-responsible initiatives are manifold across the island. Pimalai, which last year became the first property on Koh Lanta to receive the coveted Green Globe certification, runs educational programmes as part of its Rak Lanta (Love Lanta) project that advises local communities, small business owners and schools on how to effectively segregate and recycle noncompostable materials, as well as providing waste bins and garbage storage facilities around the Kantiang Beach community. With this aim of reducing island-wide waste to zero, Pimalai has also set itself a series of ambitious five-year environmental targets. These practical onsite measures include reducing electricity consumption by 15%, daily water use by 10%, carbon footprint by 10%, and waste by 5%.

HOSPITALITY Express Group of Hotels has recently acquires Cambay Hotels

Hospitality Industry welcomes Maha Govt. s Decision To Waive Excise License Fee For 2020

Gujarat’s 4-star hotel chain – Express Group of Hotels has recently acquired seven of Neesa Leisure Ltd. (NLL) operated Cambay Hotels. Presently, the Express Group of Hotels owns and operates three premium hotel properties in the State, two in Vadodara and one in Jamnagar. With the recent acquisition, the Express Group adds over 800 keys to its existing portfolio of 376 rooms. The new properties are located at Gandhinagar and Ahmedabad in Gujarat and at Neemrana, Udaipur and Jaipur in the State of Rajasthan. Express Group of Hotels is awaiting the approval of the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT), Ahmedabad for formally taking over the reins of Cambay Hotels. “The Express Group of Hotels is expanding and it’s exciting times for the company. At present, we are one of the few premium hotel chains in Gujarat. With the new addition, we not only will increase our offerings in Gujarat but will also venture into Rajasthan, a new market for us. Cambay Hotels has been here for over four decades, so essentially we are inheriting a legacy. We are awaiting the approval of the NCLT and are confident of a positive outcome, soon,” says Mr. Nirav Gandhi, Owner, Express Group of Hotels.

The Hotel and Restaurant Association of Western India (HRAWI) and the Federation of Hotel & Restaurant Associations of India (FHRAI) have welcomed the Maharashtra Government’s decision to waive off the excise license fee on pro-rata basis along with the roll-back of the 15% annual fee increase for the year 2020. The two Associations had jointly submitted multiple representations requesting for the waiver. FHRAI and HRAWI have thanked the Hon. CM – Shri Uddhav Thackeray, Deputy CM – Shri Ajit Pawar, Minister of Tourism and Environment – Shri Aaditya Thackeray, Minister of Excise and Labor Department – Shri Dilip Walse-Patil. The Associations have also thanked the Principal Secretary Tourism, Culture, Excise and Aviation – Smt. Valsa Nair Singh for standing with the industry and facilitating the above. “This is a major relief for the restaurants in the State and we thank the Government for giving us the waiver on the excise license fee. The eight odd months of lockdown has wrecked almost every other player in the Hospitality industry. An annual fee should be payable if a service is rendered for the entire year. The HRAWI had been contesting the applicability of the fee ever since restaurants were asked to remain closed during the lockdown. Also the 15 per cent increase in the annual fee at a time when hotels and restaurants remained shut was unfair. ” says Mr Sherry Bhatia, President, HRAWI.

The Grand Canyon Of India

GANDIKOTA CANYON The Grand Canyon of Gandikota is one of the most unusual place in India. These spectacular canyons lie in a small village of Kadapa district in Andhra Pradesh. The gorges of Gandikota are formed between the Erramala range of hills, also known as Gandikota hills and the river Pennar that flows at its foot. The word gandi in Gandikota is telugu word for gorge and Kota means fort. This untouched and unexplored place is a weekend getaway from Bengaluru and Hyderabad. It is a natural wonder, you must see to believe. The place is less

crowded and a must visit for nature lovers and adventure seekers. The experts believe the canyon are more than a thousand years old. The site of these canyon from the Gandikota fort is vast, magnificent and inarguably beautiful. There are several other attractions near by Gandikota fort - The magnificent fort dates back to 13th century. It was once famous for being one of the most impregnable strong forts. Sadly, all that's left of this fort is a red sandstone structure with intricate carvings.
