27 September is World Tourism Day! And this year theme is ~ Tourism for All! Accessible Tourism for all is about the creation of environments that can cater for the needs of all of us, whether we are traveling or staying at home. May that be due to a disability, even temporary, families with small children, or the ageing population, at some point in our lives, sooner or later, we all benefit of universal accessibility in tourism. Taking it to the right for all of the world’s citizens to experience the incredible diversity of our planet and the beauty of the world we live in. On this year’s World Tourism Day help us spread the word of both the importance and immense benefits universal accessibility has and can bring to society at large. Ever since its inception, World Tourism Day is celebrated to foster awareness among the international community of the importance of tourism and its social, cultural, political and economic value. As the official day set aside in the United Nations Calendar the celebration seeks to highlight tourism’s potential to contribute to reaching the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), addressing

some of the most pressing challenges society is faced with today. The official World Tourism Day 2016 celebrations will be held in Bangkok, Thailand. To u r i s m i n T h a i l a n d h a s g r o w n increasing rapidly in recent years. In 2015, the country became the most visited in Southeast Asia, hosting almost 30 million international tourists. This helped Thailand earn US$ 44.6 billion in tourism receipts, showing that tourism is playing an ever greater role in the country’s development and path to further prosperity. Commenting on it, UNWTO SecretaryGeneral Mr. Taleb Rifai, said, “Tourism has experienced a revolution in the past 50 years. In 1950 there were 25 million international tourists; today there are around 1.2 billion people travelling the world. Travelling has become a huge part of many lives.” “When travelling, we come across new people, new sights, and new ideas. Often our perception of the world changes as we see more of it. However, we must not forget that for many, travelling can be quite a difficult process” he added.

15% of the world’s population is estimated to live with some form of disability. That is 1 billion people around the world who may be unable to enjoy the privilege of knowing other cultures, experience nature at its fullest and experience the thrill of embarking on a journey to explore new sights. “We thus urge all countries and destinations, as well as the industry, to promote accessibility for all in the physical environment, in transport systems, in public facilities and services and in information and communications channels” he concluded. Mrs. Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul, Minister of Tourism and Sports of Thailand said, “For this year's World Tourism Day theme “Tourism for All – Promoting Universal Accessibility”, it is a conscious reminder to us all around the world to push for integration in order to improve each other’s potential in tourism and to promote a mutual understanding of different cultures and traditions. This is where tourism extends beyond numbers and figures, as tourism has the magic to bring people from all over the globe, from all walks of life to be

together peacefully without discrimination and to be in a world where we respect each other and work towards a common goal of sustainable tourism and human capital development. There is not a greater time than now for us to integrate and work together for us to reach our optimum in the internationally recognized universal design and for us to work hand in hand towards the development of our beloved tourism industry. On the occasion of World Tourism Day on behalf of the Royal Government of the Kingdom of Thailand and the Thai people, I would like to express my sincerest thanks to the UNWTO for honouring Thailand by giving us, “Amazing Thailand”, the opportunity to be the host of the official celebration for World Tourism Day 2016. My gratitude also goes out to every single one of you involved in the process and for making this year's celebration a grand success, and finally, I invite everyone around the world to celebrate this glorious day with us in the Land of Smiles and to be a part of the promotion of tourism for all and the development of universal accessibility.” Source: unwto.org

Ridin’ Solo - Pondicherry I recently concluded a four day solo trip to Pondicherry (also known as Puducherry). Everything you want to know about these places can be found on the web. I am writing this article so I can share my own experience with the Safari Plus readers and some photos that were unique to my trip. Something about the city - Puducherry is formed out of the four enclaves of Former French India. This precisely explains the heavy French influence in the region. The city is divided neatly into two sectors French Quarters and the Indian Quarters. As you take a walk down the French Quarters one can witness the typical French style houses with long compounds and stately walls. The destination is dotted with several French style Cafes and is bereft of pollution. The Aurobindo Ashram heavily fosters the seeds of a clean and green earth.

tranquillity. People could go in and concentrate. There was something differently peaceful about the day. And I experienced that at every hour of the day. There were positive energies in the entire township. Sri Aurobindo Ashram, far from Auroville, deep in the heart of Pondicherry, was a similar experience. Better, infact. There lies the samadhi of Sri Aurobindo, made of pure white marble. I just went around it and stood at a fair distance to then look at something that was written on its side. What I saw then, moved me. People sat on their knees and bowed their heads down, their forehead and fingers touching the samadhi. They would sit like that for an entire minute, or maybe even more. And then they wake up,

Beaches Pondicherry becomes a tourist hot spot owing to the presence of a rather clean and scenic beach line. The beaches are less crowded, and are frequented by both foreigners and Indians. Some of the famous beaches are the Auroville Beach, the Paradise beach and the Chunnambar beach. The Auroville beach is a popular for swimming owing to its shallow waters. The beach is largely visited those residing in the Auroville Village. The Paradise Beach is accessed by boat, and the Chunnambar beach is the most beautiful beach is all of Pondicherry. The spot is ideal for putting up a seaside tent, or an overnight stay. The beach is known for its scenic vistas, as it intersects with the backwaters of t h e re g i o n . Infact the

The famous botanist Perottet established the same in 1826. The Bhakti Park is another tourist attraction. The park is made up of five French style gardens laden with French influence, reminding us of the beauty of French architecture. The garden is also called the Aayi Mandapam or the Place Du Panthéon. A trip to the Pondicherry Museums throws light on the trade relations between India and the Roman Empire. Also there are interesting relics of the Pallava and the Chola dynasty. The mansions of the famous poets of Pondicherry give insight on the literary experts of the bygone era.

Auroville, Matrimandir and Sri Aurobindo Ashram My stay was at a hotel 8 kilometres from Pondicherry, at a ‘global’ township called Auroville. And the other eleven beds in the dormitory were occupied by people from Korea, Spain, Chile, France and Germany; and Indians too, ofcourse. Auroville is a a city envisioned by ‘The Mother’. GURU MANTRA Indians Are Taking More Overseas Holidays

Despite a contentious economic climate, a more robust consumer outlook is emerging in 2016 in India than many other countries. Together with travel desire and sound economic stability (with double income in each family) and emotional connect between travel and quality of life are the driving force behind. Consumers in India use the best technology available to get information on destinations and decide travel preference and this is all the more useful with availability of instant, personalized and online services from overseas destinations and based on this facility, outbound is flourishing from India. The global financial and economic crisis clearly has not dampened people’s

desire to travel. Many Indians travelled and spent so much money overseas with a travel of average 11% growth year on basis and at a last count it crossed over 15 million (for 2014) India’s continuing upward trend in the global travel industry is due to its economic growth as the main reason and has been observed by the destination promotion offices specially the emergence of a new middle class in our country which have sparked the desire to travel overseas (which prevails even in times of crisis). So India’s position is recognized in global market of Travel & Tourism in a big way, the position by rank cannot be indicated. As I have been in this industry nearly over 45 years, I would expect from overseas destination Tourism offices/ Agents for Indian (if they want to attract them to their respective destinations, as per details given below: ! Relevant information and c o m p re h e n s i v e d a ta w i t h v i s a facilitation, enchanting packages, availability of Indian food and lot of shopping discounts etc is made easy online ! Indians look for experiencing indigenous cultures ie local festival, visit local markets, perfumery (in France), Silk Fabric Printing (in China/Japan) Ikabena presentation and on hand training (in Japan), Soccer match in UK, Edinburgh Tattoo etc.

! Indian travels for business and combines with MICE travel, corporate focus on cost optimization and innovative performance enhancement. This sector is driver for outbound from India as company meets the major cost and lot of discounts are offered in the package by the Destination Country. ! Indians have great likings for food. F& B heads should focus on food, (not on frills). Food on the table menus with healthy and organic options, open kitchens customized food help gives a warm welcome feelings at the hotel and they have memorable experience. ! They like more functional hotel than loaded with extra facilities (which they may non require) Cost cut is the key word. Need savings for shopping. Technology the internet will attract more consumer not only travel search and information but also communicating with friends and family and for the purpose of selecting a destination for travel together. New age Indian travelers prefer transactions online. So go on updating with new offer. ! Indians will continue to travel to Europe and US. Among new destinations Myanmar is in their mind, provided travel access become easier. ! Family holidays will be the general rule for Indian outbound so customized tour packages are essential. Women group travelers will also be new travel

conpenent. Infact woman in the family will be the decision maker on selecting the destination use woman magazines for promotions or invite women Editors of the Journals under Media Relations Programme. ! Corporate houses/ Realty majors, Pharmaceutical firms, Auto Industry, Insurance Agency etc will give the maximum business for outbound. ! The well-heeled Indian travelers will look for high end hotels and VIP treatments, Spa and beauty therapies, Luxury brands and comfortable transport for movements. LORDS HOTELS & RESORTS Announces Major Expansion Plans

I n d i a ’s f a s t e s t g r o w i n g hospitality chain Lords Hotels & Resorts has announced plans to aggressively expand especially in the south and the east. The group launched three new hotel properties in Agra, Jammu and Thissur. With this, the hotel chain today stands at a count of 25 properties, including one international hotel, and is aiming at adding another 15 to take the total count to at least 40 properties by the year 2020. “Since the formation of the company in 2007 we have looked at growing aggressively. In nine years we have marked our presence mainly in the western region and are increasing our footprint in the north. We recently added a couple of properties to our portfolio in the south including a lavish resort in Thissur. The east has a good potential for growth especially in the mid-market segment and with our strength in this area, we are positive that we would be able to quickly take a lead in

the region,” says Mr. P. R. Bansal, Chairman, Lords Hotels & Resorts. “Also, after having established our presence in Nepal, we have realized that we are positioned well enough to cater to the international market. We are slated to announce the launch of our second property in Nepal and are also looking at setting feet in Kenya and some other countries in the African continent,” he adds. “We are focusing on expansion across all the categories. Of our three new launches, our properties in Jammu and Agra belong to the Lords Inn brand, while our property in Kerala belongs to the Lords Resorts brand. In the forthcoming phase we will also be looking to hard promote our five branded F&B outlets and one spa. As India claims its rightful place on the global tourism map, Lords is poised to tap this great opportunity to its optimum potential,”says Mr. Rishi Puri, Vice President, Lords Hotels and Resorts.

Accommodation is one of the biggest concerns and focus areas for young professionals and students and their parents, while shifting to a new city. The experience of moving largely depends on the place one choses to stay at. Globally, student accommodation market has huge potential where students across the world look for inexpensive quality stay options while studying. India has been a huge PG market but highly unorganized and untapped which is now fast changing with players like WudStay foraying into the segment. In December last year, WudStay became the first branded accommodation player in India to get into the category which is typically dominated by brokers and middlemen. The accommodation segment has emerged as a hot sector for investors with other players, now, trying their hand at standardizing the otherwise cluttered market. The company started its hostel operations and tasted success in Kota, India's biggest education hub in Rajasthan which was earlier a middlemen dominated market and where standardization and quality were at the bottom. Kota attracts close to 2,00,000 students every year from across India to prepare for IIT and medical institutes entrance exams with a tenure of 12 to 24 months largely taking admissions in one of the 8 major and a number of smaller coaching institutes. Living apart from their families along with peer pressure also exerts stress which is increased due to lack of quality accommodation. WudStay is not only providing quality options to students, but also the assurance of helping students in relieving added pressure through organizing counseling sessions, small gathering to network and ideate, recreational activities and motivational talks. Recently, the State Government has also started encouraging conducive environment for students to live and study. Commenting on potential of the segment, Mr. Prafulla Mathur, CEO & Founder at WudStay said, “We started with the hostel accommodation from the city of Kota which is one of the biggest education hub in India. I had been an engineering student myself, and I understand the importance of a quality hostel stay. We wondered why no one ever tried to address this before. We currently have over 150 properties in Kota alone. We are further expanding to newer markets with an aim to cover majority of Indian education hubs.” WudStay is all set to expand its operations to Chennai, Pune and Indore markets soon as they are m a j o r e d u cat i o n h u bs fo r E n g i n e e r i n g , Management and CA students respectively. “With our hostel proposition, we are aiming to provide quality accommodation options to young professionals and students who are looking at starting a new phase in their lives. The last thing that an individual wants to worry about in a new city is the accommodation. WudStay aims to take that stress off its users across the education and corporate hubs like Kota, Indore, Gurgaon, Delhi and Bangalore.”Added Prafulla. More info - www.wudstay.com
