There is also a sea change in MICE infrastructure in India with new players like The Lavasa International Convention Centre (LICC), Jaipur Exhibition and Convention Centre (JICC), upgraded Hyderabad International Convention Centre (HICC) which combined with development of Airports, facilitation of visa on arrival (etourist visa) to 150 countries, Highway facilities, exotic Incredible India Campaigns visible globally boosted MICE business in a big way. Specialized MICE operators have drawn out competitive packages and more and more corporate houses are utilizing their professional services Domestic MICE movement is showing a positive trend but Inbound MICE would need some more time. The key to success depends on how exclusive one can make the event with exotic destinations within the country. With great buildings with elegantly designed Ball rooms spread over acres of land, hotels nearby support infrastructure of large exhibitions, trade shows, cultural events with flexible venue options, state of art IT infrastructure and equipment specialized meeting rooms, board rooms, translation booths and all these make possible to hold big MICE events with ease. The operational ease for the

All the more support services have been well taken care by all newly constructed Convention Centers with proper care on Security, Parking, Housekeeping, Exhibition storage, dock control, language translators, audio system. Indian Subcontinent is now being focused for MICE business due to India’s Central location in the global aviation route and the diverse culture that provide unique experience. Even availability of quality hotel have made a difference. In fact HICC is our first world class, state of art venue with a pillar less internal hall spanning 6,480 meters purpose built Convention destination. Located in a serene 15 acre landscape environment, which can take 6000 delegates in the massive internal hall. With upgraded airport in Hyderabad. it has easy global connections. On a rough estimate about 800 to 900 trade shows are held annually and these cover Medical, Pharmaceutical, Automobile, Education, Tourism Insurance, Tourism Security, Gift & Handicrafts, Legal Publishing and many more sectors. MICE business is expected to come from new markets like Latin America and

Eastern European countries. Incentives component is more in MICE business. If planned in a professional manner, our MICE tour operators can do a good job with excellent Pre & Post Convention tours. Good thing is that even two tier cities are also doing well in MICE business like Indore. We must put up combined effort to showcase our iconic buildings as venues, new exotic destinations specially the Lavasa Convention Centre, Jaipur Exhibition and Convention Center, Chennai Convention Center in Kochi, Srinagar, Bengaluru, Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Hyderabad that India is capable of attracting serious MICE business into the country and one can make a choice about the venue. Europe was our major Source of incentives since the time MICE business was included in our tourism operations. But since global economic downturn

especially in Europe the numbers progressively came down and even average group spend also came down by 10 to 20% so the MICE operators were forced to look for new markets like US, Australia even South East Asia. But domestic market has come out as a major source of incentive business. Industry hosted SITE global conference and DRV from Germany and it is hoped this will draw global attention toward India and show some business growth. We are worried about Dry weather for 4 months from April which may affect

business. Even our incentive operators are looking into Latin America market as future, potential and have participated in local travel exhibitions in a big way. Even exploring Canada, New Zealand, Australia for Agro conventions, Spa and Rejuvenation for gourmet incentives. Trend is fast picking and it augurs well for India. About 20-25 of total tourists coming to India can be expected for MICE segment though no specific recoding has been made on that account. The recent PATA Travel Mart in Bengaluru, Achievers Summit in Goa, International film festival in November 2015 in Goa, Auto Expo in Noida all point toward the increased MICE business toward India. But we have to do more homework. We should have some of our Heritage Monument as backdrop for special dinner, fashion shows like one can do in overseas at London Bridge, at amusement parks, Wildlife locations and we have plenty of such locations in India. We need to create unique experience. Also skill development programme to service this segment with language speaking ushers, interpreters, comfortable Coaches and entertainment shows. Industry is making all round efforts as MICE business has huge potential. Government both Central and State Governments have seen huge potential in the economy and extending full support and even tax incentives for construction of Convention Centers of international standard. So the two tier c i t i e s a re a l s o n o w re a d y fo r convention/exhibition events, marriage events. It is due to affordability accessibility Ahmedabad, Udaipur, Bhubaneswar and Kochi have attracted big MICE events, marriage events, fashion shows, trade launching events. Now we are capable of hosting medium to large MICE movements and our MICE operators are doing this business very professionally.

By Gour Kanjilal MICE travel in India has seen ups & downs in recent years. With big downturn in 2009 onwards the MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Events) industry faced a big blow and only recovered in January 2010 with MICE movements for outbound and domestic markets. The operational ease for the

conference and exhibition organizers has made MICE industry to prosper. Arabian Travel Market 2016

Arabian Travel Market 2016

ATM 2016 opens on highnote His Highness Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, officially inaugurated Arabian Travel Market (ATM) 2016, marking the start of the 23rd edition of the show. He was joined by dignitaries including His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman of Dubai Civil Aviation Authority and Chairman of Emirates Group and Helal Saeed Almarri, Director General, Dubai World Trade Centre Authority (DWTCA) and Dubai Department of Tourism and

Commerce Marketing (DTCM) and who embarked on a tour of the exhibition as the four-day industry showcase got underway. Nick Pilbeam, Divisional Director – Travel, Reed Exhibitions was also in attendance. This year's show, welcomed 423 main stand holders representing 86 countries, with more than 26,000 visitors. Boasting an extra hall, ATM 2016 has more than 2,800 exhibiting countries and 64 national pavilions, with 100 new exhibitors making their debut at the trade event.

Industry leaders map out sustainable future of UAE Tourism The Future of the UAE as a Global Tourism Hub was the headline session opener for the all-new Global Stage at ATM 2016, as eight of the Emirate's leading tourism and hospitality minds shared their experience and insight into opportunities for sustained future sector growth. Moderated by BBC World News anchor, Zeinab Badawi, the panelists included Gerald Lawless, Head of Tourism, Dubai Holding; Issam Kazim, CEO, DCTCM; Haitham Mattar, CEO, Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority; Marwan bin Jassim Al Sarkal, CEO, Shurooq; Sultan Al Mutawa Al Dhaheri, Acting Executive Director, Tourism, Abu Dhabi Tourism & Culture Authority; Aligi Gardenghi, VP Marketing EMEA and Commercial Director MEA, Hilton; Thierry Antinori, Executive Vice President & CCO, Emirates Airline; and HE Khalid Jasim Al Midfa, Chairman, S h a r j a h C o m m e r c e & To u r i s m Development Authority. Differentiation as part of a shared UAEwide tourism vision was the consensus of the eight-strong panel, with each emirate highlighting its individual contribution to the tourism big picture

as the Emirates looks to the long term. “We are not looking at competing, but complementing; you don't see the Côte d'Azur racing to become the next Paris. We are all busy trying to leverage our greatest assets to position ourselves in the market,” said Haitham Mattar, CEO, Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority; a sentiment that was echoed by the other non-Dubai panelists. Sultan Al Mutawa Al Dhaheri, Acting Executive Director, Tourism, Abu Dhabi Tourism & Culture Authority (ADTCA), said: “What we do as the seven emirates in promoting the UAE and each city so aggressively [means] that we are complementing one another. We are not just growing visitor numbers we want to retain them.” According to Marwan bin Jassim Al Sarkal, CEO, Shurooq, the UAE's tourism authorities are not in a race to emulate Dubai's success; rather the focus is on developing and showcasing unique attributes and attractions. “We focused on features that we can actually build on like the heart of Sharjah historic district; eco-tourism on Sharjah's east coast where, for example, you can kayak in Kalba and see turtles

flydubai’s #StayConnected Dubai-based flydubai announced its latest onboard services as part of its ongoing commitment to providing an enjoyable overall travel experience. and kingfishers,” he remarked. For Issam Kazim, CEO, DCTCM, future growth is still reliant on public-private partnerships, but with the need to take things to the next level and showcase the depth of Dubai's tourism product, as well as continuing to promote the safe and secure environment of the UAE. “The region has been in the middle of negative noise for quite some time, and we need to show the positive energy that is coming out of the UAE,” he said. “Rather than our original six or seven source markets, we are now focused on the 20 markets that we need to be going after; and this can also benefit the other emirates,” he added. Gerald Lawless, Head of Tourism, Dubai Holding, and newly appointed Chairman of the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC), commenting on challenges to future tourism growth, said: “It is important for all governments to look at the facilitation of travel. We want to make it more secure by having a common visa process. “It's not about which country a person is coming from, but the individual. For all of us in the tourism industry, this would facilitate travel in a very secure manner

for the future.” Continued peace and harmony with its neighbours was also raised as crucial for the UAE tourism sector's stability and growth; and this extends to destination marketing on a global level. “It's important to be able to manage perceptions, and this can be achieved through stronger bonds and collaboration with the media,” noted. HE Khalid Jasim Al Midfa, Chairman, Sharjah Commerce & Tourism Development Authority. Arabian hospitality was also identified as a key driver for tourism growth. “When you come here, you feel [at] home. It is a place where everybody smiles at you. We are a place that welcomes people, and a lot of people dismiss this when they travel,” remarked Marwan bin Jassim Al Sarkal, CEO, Shurooq. “Designed to showcase the very best speakers in the business, with a wealth of high level strategic topics, the ATM Global Stage certainly provided a strong start to the 2016 proceedings with an impressive and incisive discussion,” concluded Nadege Noblet-Segers, Exhibition Manager, Arabian Travel Market.

Ras Al Khaimah Signs Agreement With Cox & Kings Ras Al Khaimah has signed an agreement with Cox & Kings Ltd., the leading tour operator from India, to strengthen its relationship and expand its presence in the Indian market, which is one of the fastest outbound markets in the region. This agreement will focus on promoting the various aspects of Ras Al Khaimah and popularize it in the Indian market. The agreement, which was signed at Arabian Travel Market (ATM), is aimed at increasing tourism arrivals to Ras Al Khaimah from India. The partnership, which will take effect from May 1st 2016, will also introduce Ras Al Khaimah to the Indian market through specially created itineraries, creation of stand alone tourism products for the emirate and market the destination via a series of campaigns and training programmes for Cox & Kings staff. India has already cemented its position as one of the emirate's leading source markets with an 80 percent increase in

visitors year-on-year (2014-2015). Haitham Mattar, CEO of Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority said: “Following our revised strategies and Vision to reach one million visitors by the end of 2018, we will be announcing a number of partnerships such as this. Air India Express has already launched new routes to the emirate and our agreement with Cox & Kings will ensure we're making the destination as accessible as ever.”

“We focused on features that we can actually build on like the heart of Sharjah historic district; eco-tourism on Sharjah's east coast where, for example, you can kayak in Kalba and see turtles

and kingfishers,” he remarked.

10 Things You Didn’t Know about Changi Airport 1. Really, the plants in Changi Airport Look around Changi Airport and you'll notice plants and bright flowers blooming all year round. These flowers may look artificial as they adorn displays around the airport (many passengers have been seen checking out the petals), but the flowers at Changi are genuine! To provide passengers the best visual and scent experience, Changi Airport has its own nursery growing its own supply of plants! 2. Unusual Restrooms The restrooms at Changi Airport are not just places for quick relief. Some offer great views for plane-spotting while one in Terminal 3 is the perfect spot for ladies to prepare to look fabulous. If you want to feel like a star at Changi Airport, visit the unique Powder Room at Terminal 1 and Terminal 3 Transit (sorry guys, it's just for the ladies). 3. Sweet reprieve for parents Parents, how many times, at an airport, have you wished you could grab a coffee, sit down somewhere to take a rest and just let the kids run loose? At Changi Airport, it's all possible. The rest areas are strategically located next to children's playgrounds, so that you can still keep an eye on them even while you give your tired feet some needed reprieve. Best of all, some of these rest areas are equipped with free foot massage machines! What else can you ask for? 4. Peace and quiet Throughout Changi Airport, whether at check-in or in the hustle and bustle of

the transit areas, we pride ourselves on maintaining a quiet and relaxing mood for passengers. We minimise the number of flight announcements and take advantage of specially designed and strategically placed carpets to reduce noise levels. 5. Intelligent lighting Ever noticed that Terminal 3 always seem bright in the day but yet comfortable? This is because the amount of light entering the terminal is regulated by computerised louvres on the rooftop the terminal. These louvers are

programmed to respond to the brightness of daylight outside the

terminal. On a sunny day, they open minimally to reduce the amount of sunlight entering terminal, while on a gloomy day, they will open up to allow more light in. 6. Feeding more than 50 million passengers a year With close to 140 F&B outlets in Changi's three terminals, passengers are thoroughly spoilt for choice. From Japanese to Indian, Chinese to Western, F&B outlets range in size from quick bite stations to full-fledged restaurants. The food options have been carefully curated by Changi's team to suit different palettes and wallets. Most of

with Singapore to passengers at Changi Airport, the Raffles Long

Bar is on the top level of the new Wine & Spirits duplex in the middle of the Terminal 3 transit hall. On the menu also are other cocktails to choose from. Adjacent to the Long Bar are branded boutiques for wines and spirits which showcase their heritage and finest products. If you are in luck, you can also get up close and personal with master distillers, blenders and brand ambassadors for more insights into your favourite spirits. 8. Bask in tropical sunlight, anyone? Possibly the only airport rooftop swimming pool anywhere in the world, the Changi Airport swimming pool located next to the Aerotel Transit

Hotel at Terminal 1 is very popular with passengers from temperate countries. With full shower facilities and a view into the tarmac area at the far corner of the pool, the swimming pool is one of the many leisure options available at Changi A i r p o r t . S o remember to bring along a set of swim wear when you next fly through Changi! 9. Don't miss your flight! Why wait until you board your flight to catch that movie you missed? You can do it in Changi Airport while waiting for your flight. Built just like the real thing, the movie theatre in Terminals 3 isn't equipped with alarm clocks to remind you to board your flight, but there is a large digital clock just next to the big s c r e e n f o r p a s s en ger's ea sy reference.

Most of

There are super-wide aisles so that passengers can park their trolleys right in front of their seats, rather than leave them at the back of the theatre unattended. There is a smaller theatre in Terminal 2. 10. Look like a million bucks before you fly! Passengers can actually get pampered with an entire suite of beauty treatments at Changi Airport – get a haircut, facial, body massage, enjoy complimentary flash makeup and even a mani-pedi, all before they fly.

INTALK

Tourism Malaysia Eye on India Mohd Hafiz Hashim recently took over as Director, Tourism Malaysia, Mumbai. In his earlier roles, Mr Hafiz has served Tourism Malaysia offices in Singapore, Sydney, Melbourne and Auckland. Mr. Hashim INTALK with Safari Plus discussing his plans to promote Malaysia in India Market Q 1. How has the tourism scenario changed over the years? And where would you place India market for Malaysia inbound? The biggest change I have seen is that travelling is not the privilege of a lucky few. Travel has become a permanent part of people's to-do list for the year. It's not just the affluent who are travelling, even middle class people are making efforts to save up for that special holiday. It's happening all across the globe and especially more so in India. And holidays are moving from 'see-as much-as-you can' price conscious to value conscious. People are willing to spend for the unique experience and also willing to come back to explore something new in the same place. Indian tourists in Malaysia continue to frequent places like Kuala Lumpur and nearby Melaka and Johor for their shopping and theme parks. Langkawi is also gaining popularity as a wedding and honeymoon destination. Of late, East Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak have

22

begun to catch the fa n c y o f t h e experiential Indian traveller. Adrenaline pumping activities like scuba diving, river rafting, trekking in rain forests etc are slowly but steadily gaining popularity amongst the adventure seekers in India. Q 2. What do you expect will be the most challenging aspects of the role of Director at Tourism Malaysia, Mumbai? What are your new strategies to promote tourism in India? Which new destinations you will be promoting in order to attract Indian travelers? Indians are travelling abroad like never before. It's not just the nearby countries that they frequent, even off beat long haul destinations are being considered quite frequently. In fact, the Indian traveller is spoilt for choice. So the challenge for us would be to keep Malaysia top of mind for both the first time traveller and also for the experiential traveller. This means listening closely to the evolving needs of the traveller, customizing trips and developing products that appeal to their

individual senses. Fortunately Malaysia is a traveller's haven. There is so much to see and do and with so much still untapped, we are c o n f i d e nt o f o u r brand appeal. Malaysia is expected to attract 1 million Indian tourists this year and we will be targeting the Tier2 and Tier 3 markets to reach these numbers. We are also planning to promote niche products like self-drive, luxury travel, eco-tourism, sports tourism, business travel etc. to reach out to special interest segments of the Indian traveller. Q 3. Please share some Tourism Statistic of past year 2015. India is a significant contributor to the tourism economy of Malaysia. Last year as many as 722,141 Indian tourists visited Malaysia making it the 6th largest contributor to tourist arrivals. Though it was a 6.2% drop as compared to 2014, on the brighter side tourism receipts from Indian tourists has increased from RM2.3 billion in 2014 to RM2.6 billion in 2015 which showed a positive growth.

Promote Iceland Conducts Maiden Roadshow In India In order to increase tourist footfalls from India, Promote Iceland recently conducted its maiden roadshow in Delhi, Bangalore and Mumbai. On the occasion of the roadshow, Mr. Thorleifur Thor Jonsson, Manager Trade Delegations, Promote Iceland said, “We have not been very active in the Indian market in the past. But now we think that Iceland has gained interest in India and we want to build on the momentum through our maiden roadshows. The roadshow was a platform for us to meet the travel trade and understand the requirements of Indian travellers.” T h e m u l t i - c i t y ro a d s h o w s w a s

The Icelandic delegation included representation from companies like Gray Line, Iceland Air, Iceland Europe Travel, Tripical, Gudmundur Jonasson Travel, Iceland Travel and Terra Nova Iceland. H.E Mr Thorir Ibsen, Ambassador of Iceland to India who attended the roadshows in all three cities added, “There has been an interest among Indians to visit Iceland after the picturization of the song Gerua from the

movie Dilwale in Iceland. The locales of Iceland were beautifully captured in that song which has caught the attention of tourists in India. We want to leverage on this interest and increase the number of tourist arrivals from India. We would

also like to invite more Bollywood movies to come and shoot in Iceland.” Iceland received a little over 1000 tourists from India last year. Promote Iceland’s strategy is to target the premium travellers from India as the destination is not for ‘budget’ travellers. Being blessed with beautiful l a n d s c a p e s , ro a r i n g v o l c a n o e s , monolithic glaciers, icy mountains and deep fjords, Iceland’s beauty sometimes seem surreal and will appeal to the Indians who are looking for ‘new’ and ‘niche’ destinations.
