GURU MANTRA OVERTOURISM

DOMESTIC PLUS

Overtourism is a condition wherein destinations are frequented by too many travelers at a given time and sometimes beyond its carrying capacity.

Gour Kanjilal

UNWTO defined term Overtourism as the maximum number of people that may visit a tourist destination at the same time, without causing destruction of the physical, economic and sociocultural environment and an unacceptable decrease in the quality of visitors’ satisfaction.

This happens to many islands in Greece, Beaches in Italy, hill stations in India, Heritage monument like Taj Mahal in India, Safari Parks in Africa these places are often seen overcrowded with visitors on a daily basis. Locals do thrive on tourist business but locals also find it difficult to live a peaceful life, costs going up as tourists buy the best, local transport is crowded, places littered with garbage, and this even include remote places in Uttarakhand which faced over-construction to lure tourists and face the havoc. Overcrowding cost too much for Kedarnath for pilgrimage tourists, Manali overcrowding in season even one can’t walk and pickpocketing, cheating and negative things related to tourism flourishes giving bad name to the destination and loss of jobs for local people. This necessitates taking steps to preserve the local culture, flavour and environment so that the destination should not lose travellers choice to visit the place. The state government and the industry should form partnerships to collect and analyse consumer data to identify travellers trends, behavior, create new products or to market alternative destinations to help minimize the overcrowding that is happening in many of the tourist destinations globally. This is to see to alleviate the issues that surround due to Overtourism. Also if more people set out to explore lesser-known destinations rather eco-sensitive places, nature resorts, wildlife, the risk of irresponsible travel increases. It also negatively impacts quality of life in the area or quality of the experience. It is just the Opposite of responsible tourism which is about visiting tourism to make better places

to live in and better places to visit. Ultimate outcome is reflected where either the hosts or guests and often both are Dissatisfied. Only way to move forward is to Plan the destination traffic movements based on carrying capacity, how much it can negatively impact the local culture, local living costs, the purpose is to achieve the goal will the destination use tourism or be used by it. All stakeholders must form a team and take policy steps for Sustainable Tourism and Responsible Tourism with focus on benefits accrue to locals. And also set a strategic long-term plan for sustainable urban tourism including the definition of the carrying capacity for the city and for specific areas and attractions. This is particularly useful to implement strategies that aim at dispersal of visitors, visitor segmentation and those where new itineraries and attractions are developed more effectively. By Gour Kanjilal, Former, Dy. Director General, Ministry of Tourism, Govt. of India views expressed are personal.

MICE PLUS TCEB Taps Into Tier2 MICE Cities In India

TCEB Joins Forces To Hold 'TIME 2019'

Thailand Convention & Exhibition Bureau (Public Organization) taps into secondary MICE cities in India with the herald of MICE road shows, eyeing to attract more than 13,000 visitors into Thailand to boost meetings and incentives market by which can generate over 1,000 MB of revenue. Mr. Chiruit Isarangkun Na Ayuthaya, President of TCEB, disclosed that TCEB has been thinking highly of MICE markets in India, which is considered a MICE market with the second largest number of MICE travellers after China. As a market with high potentiality in terms of population and economic growth, TCEB recognised the cities and thus joined forces with Thai entrepreneurs to hold road shows that expect to promote meetings and incentives in secondary cities of India. During March to April, two road shows were held. The first show was in Hyderabad and Kolkata and then in Jaipur and Lucknow, which are secondary cities with a small number of MICE travellers. Interestingly, there are a good number of travel agents with high potentiality qualified to develop as MICE travel agents in the future. TCEB realises that the preparation of networking with agents at the early stage in secondary cities will help to form long-term business relationship, which is a key factor in dealing with the Indians. It is expected that the events will bring a total of 63 meetings and incentives events from India into Thailand, attracting more than 13,000 MICE travellers which can generate over 1,000 million baht of revenue.

TCEB, together with TICA and SITE Thailand Chapter, joined hands with leading business partners representing Thai Airways, Bangkok Airways and BMW (Thailand) to hold the mega event 'TIME 2019'. Expecting to serve as a national arena event that boosts the growth of meetings and incentives businesses in Thailand, the event is stepping into its 4th year with the Togetherness concept – merging the capabilities of all sectors in Thailand towards expanding the collaboration on a regional level and differentiation to penetrate into ASEAN +6 markets. 'TIME 2019' comprises 3 main elements. First, the Knowledge Exchange that features participatory seminars between Thai MICE entrepreneurs as sellers and target buyers from the ASEAN+6 countries, which may gather over 250 attendees. The talks involve 3 topics as follows: “Getting buyers attention at the point of enquiry”, “The art of negotiation that closes the deal” and “The after-sales service that makes events successful”. Statistically, the number of MICE travellers in meetings and incentives categories in the first half of Fiscal Year 2019 amounted to 348,645 or equivalent of 58% of overall international MICE market. These visitors were able to generate an approximate revenue of 25,727 million baht into Thailand, which accounted for 57% of total revenue generated by MICE. Additionally, comparing to the Half Fiscal Year 2018, the proportion of MICE travellers in meetings and incentives categories of ASEAN+6 countries amounted to 86.96% with the number of travellers of 303,182 representing a 23.70% growth.

TIRUMALA

The Abode of Lord Venkateshwara The Hill shrine of Lord Venkateshwara at Tirumala is believed to have been in existence evidence by the fact there is a reference to in Rig Veda itself. The benefits acquired by a pilgrimage to Venkatachala are mentioned in the Rig Veda and Asthadasa Puranas. In these epics, Sri Venkateswara is described as the great bestower of boons. There are several legends associated with the manifestation of the Lord at Tirumala. The temple has its origins in Vaishnavism, an ancient sect which advocates the principles of equality and love, and prohibits animal sacrifice. The sanctum sanctorum which houses the aweinspiring idol of the Lord of the Seven Hills is situated in the main temple complex of Tirumala. The ancient and sacred temple of Lord Venkateswara is located on the seventh peak of Saptagiri, Venkatachala (Venkata Hill) of the Tirupati Hill, and lies on the

southern banks of Sri Swami Pushkarini. It is by the Lord's presidency over Venkatachala, that He has received the appellation, Venkateswara (Lord of the Venkata Hill). He is also called the Lord of the Seven Hills. The temple of Sri Venkateswara has acquired unique sanctity in Indian religious role. The Sastras, Puranas, Sthala Mahatyams and Alwar hymns unequivocally declare that, in the Kali Yuga, one can attain mukti, only by worshipping Venkata Nayaka or Sri Venkateswara. As more than fifty thousand pilgrims visit the Sri Venkateswara Temple every day, TTD has organised efficient systems to ensure the smooth movement of pilgrims. Vaikuntam Queue Complex - The entrance for darshan is through the Vaikuntam Queue Complex. The complex is a series of inter-connected halls that leads to the main temple. An efficient queue system ensures that pilgrims move in an orderly fashion through the Queue Complex, towards the main temple. Places Around Tirupati Sri Padmavathi Ammavari Temple - Tiruchanoor, is one of the oldest pilgrim towns located 5km away from Tirupati, is abode of Goddess Sri Padmavathi Devi, the beloved consort of Lord Venkateswara. Legend says the Lord Venkateswara and Padmavati spent six months in the Ashram of Agasthyeswara after their wedding at Tiruchanoor. They spent six months in the forest abutting the swarnamukhi- Kalyanai-Bhima sangamam before leaving for Tirumala. Sila Thoranam - This is a rare Geological Rock Arch. 1000AD and was developed by Saluva Kings of the Vijanagara Empire. Raja Mahal and Rani Mahal are fine specimens of architecture (no timber is used in the entire construction). The replicas of the statues of Sri Krishnadevaraya and his consorts (originals inside Tirumala Temple) are kept here. The museum inside Raja Mahal has fine collections of bronze and granite sculptures. Town buses are available from Tirupati Bus Stand every ten minutes. Be prepared for a 20 minutes walk from Chandragiri town centre to the fort. The sound and light shown is another added attractive at the fort. Kanipakkam - At an distance of 60Kms the renowned Varasiddi Vinayaka Temple is situated here. The temple is 1000 years old. It is believed that Vinayaka incarnated as 'Swambu' here.
