KUMBHALGARH FORT

Kumbhalgarh Fort is a Mewar fortress in the Rajsamand District of Rajasthan state in western India. It is an World Heritage Site included in Hill Forts of Rajasthan. Built during the course of the 15th century by Rana Kumbha and enlarged through the 19th century, Kumbhalgarh is also the birthplace of Maharana Pratap, the great king and warrior of Mewar. Occupied until the late 19th century, the fort is now open to the public and is spectacularly lit for a few minutes each evening. Kumbalgarh is situated 82 km northwest of Udaipur by road. It is the most important fort in Mewar after Chittaurgarh. The massive gate of Kumbhalgarh fort, called the Ram Pol (Ram Gate). Built by Rana Kumbha in the 15th century on an unassailable hill, the fort fell only once, due to a shortage of water. Built on a hilltop 1100 metres above sea level, the fort of Kumbhalgarh has perimeter walls that extend 36 kilometres. The frontal walls are fifteen feet thick. Kumbhalgarh has seven fortified gateways. There are over 360 temples within the fort, 300 ancient Jain and the rest Hindu. From the palace top, it is possible to look tens of kilometers into the Aravalli Range. The sand dunes of the Thar desert can be seen from the fort walls. According to legend, in 1443, the Maharana of Kumbhalgarh, Rana Kumbha, was initially repeatedly unsuccessful in attempts to build the fort wall. A spiritual preceptor was consulted about the construction problems and advised the ruler that a voluntary human sacrifice would solve whatever was causing the impediment. The spiritual advisor advised building a temple where the head should fall and building the wall and the fort where the rest of his body lay. As can be expected, for some time no one volunteered, but one day, a pilgrim (some versions suggest a soldier, and some, that the spiritual preceptor and the pilgrim were one and the same) volunteered and was ritually decapitated. Today the main gate of the fortress, Hanuman Pol, contains a shrine and a temple to commemorate the great

sacrifice. According to popular folklore, Maharana Kumbha used to burn massive lamps that consumed fifty kilograms of ghee and a hundred kilograms of cotton to provide light for the farmers who worked during the nights in the valley. Its wall is the second largest wall in Asia. The Kumbhalgarh was built and ruled by Kumbha and his dynasty who were Sisodia rajputs descendents. Kumbhalgarh in its present form was developed by, and said to be personally designed by, Rana Kumbha. Rana Kumbha’s kingdom of Mewar stretched from Ranthambore to Gwalior and included large tracts of erstwhile Madhya Pradesh as well as Rajasthan. Out of the 84 forts in his dominion, Rana Kumbha is said to have designed 32 of them, of which Kumbhalgarh is the largest and most elaborate. Kumbhalgarh also separated Mewar and Marwar from each other and was used as a place of refuge for the rulers of Mewar at times of danger. A notable instance was in the case of Prince Udai, the infant king of Mewar who was smuggled here in 1535, when Chittaur was under siege. Prince Udai who later succeeded to the throne was also the founder of the Udaipur City. The fort remained impregnable to direct assault, and fell only once, due to a shortage of drinking water, to the combined forces of Mughal Emperor Akbar, Raja Man Singh of Amber, Raja Udai

Tourism in Uttar Pradesh

Though the pandemic had hit hard, but the last 2 years have highlighted the power of the domestic market and towards unlocking the full potential of domestic tourism. Uttar Pradesh is a favoured tourist destination in India with Taj Mahal, one of the eight Wonders of the World, located in Agra. Before pandemic in 2019, the state had registered a robust arrival in domestic tourist which reached 53.6 Crore and Foreign tourist arrivals crossed over 47.5 Lakhs. Alluring the domestic market and taping the potential Safari Plus INTALK with Mr. Sushil Singh, Managing Director, Jatak Tours & Travels, Varanasi to get the insight of the local progress in terms tourism and how the travel trade and hospitality sector in the state are geared up to Mr. Sushil Singh, tap it. MD, Jatak Tours & Travels, Q1) Uttar Pradesh Varanasi registered highest incoming domestic tourist in 2019. How do you see these changes in past years and the coming years? UP is largest state of India and have all kind of tourist destinations except beaches. But major tourist attraction is Pilgrimage sites, specially VaranasiAyodhya and Prayagraj. As per my opinion we have potentials to increase the incoming tourist to 30% growth every year. Q2) 53.6 Crore domestic tourist visited the state in 2019 this was before Covid Pandemic struck. What all factors according to you were the catalysts in the growth of Tourism in the state? Multiple factors played the role in the increased number of Domestic tourists a. Closure of outbound tourism b. After long lockdown people are eager to go out according to age and taste . c. In UP construction of Kashi Corridor and Ayodhya Bhagwan Shree Ram Temple . d. Condition of roads are much better and Hotels offering

lower rate. Q3) Uttar Pradesh can be the hub for promoting Buddhist Circuit and Ramayana Trails, your views on this? Yes, UP is the hub for Spiritual sector be it Hindu, Buddhists or Jain pilgrimage. Pre-Covid I was Handling roughly 7000 Buddhist foreign tourists and 2000 Hindu tourists in UP and Bihar. Q4) Your View - “Tourism in Uttar Pradesh, an economic driver of growth”. As per my view tourism especially domestic market will be a major economic generator in future. But the Government is not recognizing tourism as an industry. Q5) Are the Travel Trade and hospitality sector in the state prepared for the coming robust in Uttar Pradesh Tourism? During the past years government and private sector are working closely in developing the infrastructure, airports (turning them to International standards) and also training the locals who are direct or indirect connected to tourists. I am sure about in coming years we will be well equipped to welcome international traveller. Though we are still having a shortage of quality hotels and transports in the state. Q6) This year Rudraksha Convention Centre opened. How will this be an add-on to boost Tourism in the MICE sector? Rudraksha would be a milestone for Varanasi. But as per the current situation, they have to reduce charges to tap the domestic market. And to host big conventions or events in Rudraksha we are not having the number of hotel inventories to fulfil the requirement in Varanasi. Q7) According to you, is Government also putting in the same amount of effort? Being a tour operator and having position in IATO - I can suggest a few points to state Govt to boost Tourism in state 1. UP govt should have Tourism policy 2. All tour operators of UP should be registered under UP tourism following the govt norms, terms and conditions which will improvise the quality player in the industry. 3. Govt has to reduce Transport taxes and GST structure for 5 years to boost this Industry. I am sure minimum 20 to 30 million people will get job via tourism in Uttar Pradesh.
