Dit verslag is ingezonden door Mira Davidson en Loles Hoogerland. Van alle inzendingen paste dit onderzoek het beste bij het doel van het tijdschrift: de maatschappij meer betrekken bij de medische wetenschap. Het onderzoek is vanwege het grote aantal nierpatienten ook maatschappelijk gezien erg relevant. Het verslag is duidelijk geschreven, goed en logisch opgebouwd en ondersteund met grafieken en afbeeldingen. Om deze redenen is het verslag erg toegankelijk geschreven voor veel mensen.

Als je ziek wordt, heb je maar een wens: beter worden. Je leven is dan opeens grotendeels afhankelijk van wat er in die academische ziekenhuizen met dat overheidsgeld gedaan wordt. Plotseling is het dan zo dat mensen willen weten hoe het er precies voorstaat met de nieuwe ontwikkelingen van bijvoorbeeld medicijn en. Dat zou je kunnen lezen op de website van een stichting of aan een arts kunnen vragen, maar veel mensen willen meer. Maar wetenschappelijke publicaties zijn vaak moeilijk aan te komen en lastig te lezen voor leken. Wij willen deze mensen helpen. Door hen meer te betrekken bij het ontwikkelen van nieuwe geneesmethoden, hopen wij de samenleving beetje bij beetje bij de wetenschap te betrekken.
abstract The immune system follows various mechanisms to throw out substances that are foreign to the body, like pathogens or the tissue of a donor. Applying treatment of prednisone to kidney transplant patients will decrease the function of the immune system and enhance graft acceptance, yet increase susceptibility to other diseases. To counteract this last effect and other side effects, we considered a different way of supply of prednisone, by packaging the medicine in liposomes. Stealth liposomes are vesicles that have certain characteristics that promote engulfment only by macrophages. Macrophages play an important role in terms of infection and activation of immune response and are present at site of infection, in this case at site of transplanted graft.
The enhancement of its anti-inflammatory functions can lead to a directed decrease of immune reaction and an increased acceptance of the graft. In cooperation with the Department of Nephrology of the Leiden University Medical Centre, we investigated this different way of prednisone supply. Our theoretical research is divided in chapters on kidney disease, the immune system and immune response with transplantation. To find out whether liposomal prednisolone is indeed a better treatment than free prednisolone regarding kidney transplantation, we focus on the effect of liposomal prednisolone on macrophages by practical research on treatment of these cells.
