Looking ahead to a new era in the US poultry industry Welcome to this first edition of NatureForm Times, an occasional publication where we will share the latest news and developments from NatureForm Hatchery Technologies alongside that of our customers and partners across the North American poultry industry. As we go to press, we celebrate our first year in partnership with Pas Reform: the merging of two like-minded companies that together bring more than 100 years of hatchery innovation and expertise to an industry poised for 15 per cent growth by 2021. To achieve that growth and retain its position as one of the world’s largest poultry producers, the USA faces some very real challenges. As a major issue worldwide, food safety puts the use of antibiotics under the spotlight here in the US, with an extra focus on hygiene and biosecurity. Sustainability is another hot topic: how to provide affordable animal protein for a growing world population, while using less water, feed and energy and reducing our CO2 emissions. When we hosted the first ever Pas Reform hatchery management training course in July this year, we saw the power that customers, suppliers and scientists working together can have, to dramatically impact results and

overcome these challenges throughout the poultry value chain. Not just today – but for years to come. Based on this kind of knowledge, innovation that addresses these challenges has been built into the Smart™ NF single stage incubation systems that we are proud to be introducing to the US market. New tools, such as Circadian Incubation™, increase hatchability to produce greater numbers of healthy, uniform day old chicks, with less medication and improved feed conversion and farm performance. Anti-bacterial additives in setter trays and hatcher baskets deliver outstanding efficacy in maintaining the highest levels of bio-security. And by integrating incubation, HVAC and hatchery automation with advanced hatchery information software, we can now provide the most detailed analysis of function and performance in every area of the modern hatchery. You will find more on our new Smart™ NF series in these pages. With this commitment to the future of the US poultry industry, it is our privilege to be working with some of America’s most forward-thinking partners, among them House of Raeford, one of the top ten integrations in the US, and for whom we will build a new state-of-the-art single

stage hatchery using Smart™ NF technologies in 2015. Read their story here too. Here at NatureForm Hatchery Technologies, we are embarking on the most exciting period of our 30-year history: a new chapter with its focus firmly set on the future of our business, those of our customers – and of our industry. It is a phase of our development that would not have been possible without the support of our customers, colleagues and partners – and for that, we thank you. It is my pleasure to invite you to explore this first edition of NatureForm Times. I sincerely trust that you will find evidence of true innovation - and inspiration for what the future of our industry promises here in the USA. NatureForm Hatchery Technologies Steve Warren, President

Smart™ NF: advanced single stage technologies will fuel efficiency and growth in the US poultry industry A year of intense collaboration between the R&D teams of NatureForm Hatchery Technologies in the USA and Pas Reform Hatchery Technologies in Europe has created a new series of single stage incubation equipment. Designed to give our birds the best start in life, the Smart™ NF incubation series optimizes uniformity, with the precision to create incubation environments that help them to achieve their full genetic potential.

Smart™ NF

Setting new standards in single stage incubation

As the latest development from NatureForm Hatchery Technologies, Smart™ NF single stage incubators are designed to give birds the best possible start in life. Homogeneous temperature distribution and a narrow hatch window deliver higher hatchability and improved uniformity for unparalleled quality

Just like the Smart™ and SmartPro™ series from Pas Reform, Smart™ NF can be integrated with Pas Reform’s SmartCenterPro™ hatchery monitoring software for the optimized control and performance analysis of incubators, HVAC and Hatchery Automation Systems.

We live in a changing world, where sustainability has become a central issue for the future development of the US poultry industry and its global counterparts. Finding ways to produce sufficient animal protein for a rapidly growing world population, while at the same time using less water, feed and energy and substantially reducing CO2 emissions are very real – and growing – challenges. In the poultry value chain, this places a sharp focus on improving Feed Conversion Ratios – and in incubation, we can actively contribute to meeting this need by delivering better hatch of fertile rates and reducing the hatch window. Achieving improved results in these two crucial areas has a powerful impact on productivity and uniformity, both in the processes we employ and in the quality of the day old chicks we ultimately produce. NatureForm Hatchery Technologies is committed to delivering effective solutions for the US poultry industry for the long term - and in Smart™ NF, we have created a single stage incubation series that not only meets today’s needs, but with the benefit of some of the most advanced research in the world, will adapt to changing demands in incubation for the next twenty years.

A meeting of minds:

Steve Warren, President NatureForm and Bart

Aangenendt, CEO Pas Reform Together, the two companies are single-minded in putting

leading-edge R&D behind the

development of Smart™ NF, to fuel efficiency and promote growth in the US poultry

industry.

Individual PID control per incubator fan tower To achieve homogeneous embryo temperatures throughout every section of the Smart™ NF incubator series, the incubators have individual PID control in each fan tower zone to deliver precise heating, cooling and ventilation for a tailored single stage incubation environment and a cooling capacity that is among the highest in the industry. Airflow in line with setter trays As much as zonal control is important for homogeneous embryo temperature, to achieve true homogeneity requires an unimpeded airflow over each hatching egg. In Smart™ NF Series incubators, every trolley is turned individually in line with the airflow produced by the incubator’s fan tower. This ensures the synchronization of embryo development during incubation, which contributes to reducing the hatch window. Humidity and CO2 control, Adaptive Metabolic Feedback™ In a single stage incubation environment, achieving the correct weight loss profile for each hatching egg is critical to producing maximum numbers of the highest quality day old chicks. Smart™ NF incubators provide active simultaneous measurement and control of humidity and CO2 during incubation using Adaptive Metabolic Feedback™, a concept proven to ensure that pre-determined breed or flock specific weight loss patterns are followed and achieved. Energy Saving Module (ESM™) For modern hatcheries, energy efficiency and the reduction of operational costs are key challenges - and important development criteria for our new incubator series. The inclusion of the Energy Saving Module (ESM™) means that energy efficient, frequency controlled direct drive motors make Smart™ NF incubators among the most energy efficient incubators available today.

Outstanding results for Willmar / AG Forte

House of Raeford contracts NatureForm for new SmartPro™ single stage hatchery in South Carolina House of Raeford, one of the nation’s top ten largest chicken processors, has announced that affiliate Columbia Farms will build a state-of-the-art new US$16 million broiler hatchery with SmartPro™ incubation systems in the BatesburgLeesville area of South Carolina. Employing around 20 staff to produce more than a million birds a week on four hatch days, the new hatchery will be equipped with the most technologically advanced SmartPro™ setters and hatchers, a complete HVAC system and an entire range of hatchery automation systems. Construction is expected to take up to 18 months. Commenting on the new project, complex manager Jim Mabe said: “It is the right time to significantly upgrade our live production operations - and that starts with investing in the early life of our birds. “Following the careful evaluation of several possible incubation systems, our technical group decided to work with NatureForm Hatchery Technologies. They seem to have the most experience for building such a state-of-the-art single stage broiler hatchery here in the United States.”

According to assistant complex manager David Rush, who led the evaluation project, it was the quality of the day old chicks that ultimately compelled Columbia Farms to select Pas Reform’s SmartPro™ system from NatureForm Hatchery Technologies for the new hatchery. “When we saw the health, robustness and uniformity of the day old chicks produced both here in the US as well as in the European operations that we visited, we had no doubt that this was the best route to innovating incubation in our company. “We were further convinced by the high levels of technical support and comprehensive back up from NatureForm’s US headquarters in Jacksonville Florida for spares and service,” he continues, “which we believe is of vital importance when building and operating a project of this magnitude.” SmartPro™ single stage incubation allows for precise, zonal temperature control, which delivers a higher hatch of fertile and superior chick uniformity. The entire operation will be fully automated to support high levels of bio-security, with ‘Track and Trace’ functionality as an integral part of the quality control and hatch cycle analysis provided by SmartCenterPro™, Pas Reform’s most advanced, next generation hatchery information software.

He says, “The week-long hatchery management training course that we held in Iowa earlier this year proved to be an excellent platform for sharing the latest intelligence with invited delegates. The Pas Reform Academy perfectly complements our customer-focused approach and will be an asset to all our future projects in the USA.”

The West Columbia/Leesville complex, one of five operated by House of Raeford, currently works with 87 contract growers that supply the integration with 40 million chickens per year. With operations geared to providing ready-to-cook chicken and further processed chicken and turkey products for food service, retail and export markets, House of Raeford’s current operations include a feedmill in Monetta, a hatchery in Batesville-Leesville SC and a processing plant in West Columbia.

significant.”

As each single stage incubator occupies the same footprint as the company’s existing multi-stage machines, Holmes Foods will be able to renovate and expand its hatchery

operations on the same premises, reducing the expected return on investment time to less than three years.

Mr Weber says news of Natureform’s new partnership with Pas Reform was a pleasant surprise. “Pas Reform Hatchery Technologies has the longest experience in single stage incubation in the poultry industry - and they offer the support and expertise of Pas Reform Academy. This

combination of a committed R&D department with new

machine developments and a hands on approach to training demonstrates a wealth of knowledge and great confidence in the US industry.”
