We’ve got lots of news to share with you and I hope you’ll enjoy reading about it in these pages.

I’m especially excited to tell you about our new work on post-hatch feeding.

For two years we have worked closely with biotech start-up In Ovo, DSM Premix company Twilmij and Philips Nature­ Dynamics to develop SmartStart™ - a flexible, groundbreaking post-hatch feeding solution that gives newly hatched chicks the earliest possible access to feed, water and light.

Throughout the project we have taken our lead from nature.

SmartStart™ uses natural deep eutectic solvents (NADES) to retain water inside a semi-moist feed for a practical, simple post-hatch feeding solution. The SmartStart™ system offers a perfect start for newborn chicks, enabling them to eat, if they want to, from the moment of hatching. It promotes the development of robust day-old chicks and helps to reduce the need for antibiotics.

The beauty of the SmartStart™ concept is its ease of use and flexibility. It comprises two key elements that can be applied individually or together: precision feeding and intelligent lighting.

Working with DSM Twilmij, we have developed a semi-moist feed that provides the optimal combination of nutrients and water to support the chicks’ gut health, metabolism and immune systems. Thanks to leading edge NADES technology, SmartStart™ feed performs well in the warm conditions of the hatcher.

And we worked with lighting experts Philips to develop a specialist lighting solution that guides newly hatched chicks to the feed balconies of the hatcher basket. The soft, indirect lighting operates at a frequency and wavelength that suits day old chicks best. It is gentle on their eyes, allowing them to get used to light without stress. The lighting programs are fully adjustable for natural day and night rhythms, in line with broiler farm lighting programs, and the software is upgradeable to keep pace with future light colour and temperature requirements.

We’ve tested SmartStart™ thoroughly with several major Dutch hatcheries and their feedback convinces us that SmartStart™ is a game-changer for the poultry industry worldwide.

It enables hatchery managers to apply post-hatch feeding where it will have most benefit and its components can be applied individually or in combination. You will find that it’s easy to integrate SmartStart™ into existing hatcheries and apply it to some or all flocks; in one, two, or all hatchers.

How is it possible for desert plant seeds to germinate, despite having been buried in hot, dry sand for long periods of time?

The answer lies in natural compounds – known as NADES – that can lock water inside the seeds, so that it doesn’t evaporate. Neither lipid nor water, NADES are formed when two or more solids are mixed in a certain ratio and subsequently become liquid in the mixture. NADES are natural and edible. Royal Agro Farm chooses Pas Reform to enter Indian poultry market Leading Indian agricultural company Royal Agro Farm is expanding into poultry production for the first time and it has chosen integrated hatchery solutions specialist Pas Reform to equip its hatchery with SmartPro™ technologies.

The state-of-the-art facility, at a 400-acre site in Udumalpet, Tamil Nadu, is a key part of the new poultry business, which also includes breeder growing facilities and breeding farms.

Royal Agro Farm CEO and company owner Mr. M.S.Sunther says: “Pas Reform’s reputation locally made it easy for us to decide on SmartPro™ equipment for this project.

“We knew about the engineering capability of the Pas Reform group and we have been in close contact with them to plan the hatchery layout and make technical project calculations, to ensure we can both optimise incubation conditions and maximise chick quality.”

The project comprises a first phase of 400,000 day-old broilers per week divided over four hatches. It entails 12 SmartSetPro™ setters, each with a capacity of 124,416 hatching eggs, and 12 SmartHatchPro™ hatchers, each with a capacity of 20,736 hatching eggs.

This fully integrated hatchery project also includes climate control and automation systems. The heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system has been tailored to specification by Pas Reform engineers, and it includes air handling units, air ducting, pressure controls and temperature controls. Royal Agro Farm has also chosen to significantly automate the incubation process, with automatic candling and transfer systems and an automated chick-counting system.

Venkitakrishnan Natarajan, head of Pas Reform’s sales and service centre in Tamil Nadu, says: “The poultry market in India was difficult for several years, resulting in lower than average company returns. More recently, however, the market has recovered as poultry consumption has increased – particularly in Tamil Nadu and nearby Kerala. Tamil Nadu’s producers now have an excellent opportunity to grow their business. Kasturi Poultry Farms, associates of VH Group, also showed particular interest in Pas Reform’s integrated hatchery solutions.”

In-ovo vaccination requires good hatchery management

By Gerd de Lange, Senior Poultry Specialist, Pas Reform Academy In-ovo vaccination is gaining popularity and is being used in an increasing number of hatcheries. A driving force behind this is the increasing number of vaccines that are suitable for this method, including vector vaccines, which offer early protection against more than just one disease, and immunecomplex vaccines, which can be given in the presence of maternal antibodies.

Mass vaccination of individual embryos just prior to transfer from setter to hatcher is much less labour intensive compared to subcutaneous or intramuscular vaccination of day-old chicks, which means chicks can be placed on the farm much faster after they have been pulled. Fewer mistakes are likely to be made using in-ovo vaccination, as fewer people need to be trained and monitored than do for spray or drinking-water vaccination. Furthermore, conditions in the hatchery are easier to control.

Successful in-ovo vaccination means good immune response and no reduction in hatchability. To achieve this, attention must be paid to a number of aspects of hatchery management.

Uniformity The vaccine should be injected into the amniotic fluid or into the embryonic tissue itself. Generally speaking, this is best achieved by vaccinating on day 18 or 19 of incubation.

However, biological age and uniformity of developmental stage of the embryos are more important than the incubation time itself. If embryos are vaccinated at a too young stage of development, the risk of injecting the vaccine into the wrong location (air cell, chorion-allantois or yolk sac) is too high. Embryos should be in the hatching position (head under right wing) and the yolk stalk should have started to enter the abdomen. There should not be more than 2% externally pipped shells, as these cannot be lifted easily by the vacuum suction cups of the transfer equipment.

Hygiene The importance of hygiene before, during and after in-ovo vaccination cannot be overemphasized. A dirty egg shell increases the risk of pathogens entering the egg on vaccination, even if good needle sanitation is practised.

A rotten egg will contaminate the needle. The hole made by the needle is a breach in the natural protection formed by the cuticle, egg shell and egg membranes, and thus a point of entrance for bacteria and fungi.

the wrong location or even kill the embryo if vital organs have been punctured. Eggs accidentally incubated with the air cell down are unlikely to hatch at all after in-ovo vaccination.

Advice – Ensure embryos are at the correct developmental stage at the moment of in-ovo vaccination; do not rely solely on incubation time.

– Bear in mind that rate of embryo development is delayed by 1) prolonged egg storage; 2) incubation temperature being reached too slowly and 3) a low incubation temperature.

– Aim for uniform temperature in the setter as this will result in uniform embryo development; avoid cold spots caused by over ventilation and overactive humidifiers.

– Pay serious attention to egg hygiene: set only clean eggs and avoid eggs with hair cracks; avoid eggs getting wet as a result of ‘egg sweating’.

– Use ‘live embryo detection’ technology prior to in-ovo vaccination; alternatively, remove potential ‘exploders’ manually.

– Keep transfer room and hatcher environment very clean to avoid contamination through the hole in the shell created by in-ovo vaccination.

– Ensure eggs are in an upright position with the air cell at the top.

Sanofi Pasteur contracts NatureForm for new flu vaccine facility in Pennsylvania

Sanofi Pasteur, the world’s largest dedicated producer of

human vaccines, is to build a state-of-the-art new vaccine

production facility with SmartPro™ NF incubation systems at its campus in Swiftwater, Pennsylvania.

With 10 incubators built to exacting pharmaceutical

standards, the new facility will have a total incubation

capacity of more than 2.5 million eggs and is expected to be operational in 2019.

Sanofi Pasteur produces more than 1 billion doses of vaccine each year and previously expanded its Swiftwater vaccine production capabilities with NatureForm equipment in 2006. Successful project management, validation

capabilities and the ability to meet the stringent demands of human vaccine production were key factors in the

Thai Foods Group (TFG), a leading player in the integrated food business with facilities in both Thailand and Vietnam, continues to expand its chicken production operations.

In 2018 TFG will raise its daily processing capacity to 600,000 chickens, up from 540,000 in the previous year.

TFG’s Thai Foods Poultry Farm division will invest in a new broiler hatchery in the Sa Kaeo Province, in the east of Thailand, about 200 km from Bangkok and near to the Cambodian border.

Pas Reform has previously equipped three other hatchery projects for TFG. For this new hatchery Pas Reform will install 36 SmartSetPro™ 6 setters with a 115,200 egg-capacity, 36 SmartHatchPro™ hatchers with a 19,200 egg-capacity and the SmartCenterPro™ hatchery management system to ensure precise, consistent process control. Pas Reform will also supply the full range of hatchery automation including egg handling, egg candling and transfer, washing and waste handling equipment.

Headquartered in Ayutthaya, 100 km north of Bangkok, TFG was founded in 1987 by chief executive officer Winai Teawsomboonkij, who began operating his first chicken farm with a capacity of 20,000 chickens in the Lopburi province of Thailand. The company developed to become a multilivestock business that includes a highly effective, vertically integrated poultry supply chain with breeder facilities, hatcheries, feed mills and processing plants. In 2014 TFG converted to a public company and changed its name to Thai Foods Group Public Company Limited.

Mexico’s Alipec invests in SmartPro™ technology Russia’s Miratorg returns to Smart hatchery tech for further expansion

Russia’s Miratorg Agribusiness Holdings is investing in

further expansion for its poultry business, Bryanskiy Broiler, with a second commission for incubation and climate

control from Pas Reform. This latest expansion will increase hatchery capacity by 8 million eggs per year.

As a leading producer of beef and pork for domestic markets, Miratorg replicated its business model to launch its vertical poultry integration with Pas Reform’s Smart hatchery

technologies in 2012. In the four years since, Miratorg has developed a market-leading poultry operation, which

includes a hatchery with the capacity for 75 million eggs a year, a feed mill with an annual capacity of 360 thousand

tons and 19 poultry and meat processing plants. The company

Guadalajara-based Alipec has commissioned Pas Reform to deliver its new state-of-the-art hatchery. The SmartPro™ modular, single stage incubation systems will give Alipec a production capacity of 400,000 day old chicks each week.

Alipec, which is owned by the Delgado family, is renowned for the delivery of high quality broilers to their clients in the region of Jalisco. When completed, their new broiler hatchery will be one of the most modern in Mexico.

Pas Reform will supply 6 SmartSetPro™-4 setters, each with a capacity of 82,944 hatching eggs and 4 SmartHatchPro™ hatchers, each holding up 20,736 eggs. The new hatchery will be climate-controlled, including air-handling units using the 100% fresh air concept to assure optimum bio-security. The installation will also include semi-automatic transfer, candling, sexing, counting and waste disposal systems.

Alipec’s owners say this will give them a great deal of comfort and trust in the new hatchery. Mr. Juan Manuel Delgado, president of Alipec SA, explains: “We were looking to invest in a new, technologically state-of-the-art, hatchery and that is what we have found through our discussions with Pas Reform. Not only have we witnessed at existing Pas Reform customers the improved performance of single stage incubated chicks, we also feel comfortable that with the back up of the Pas Reform Academy, both locally and internationally, we will be able to surpass these results in our own hatchery.”

The hatchery will be operational in June 2018.

In this latest phase of development, Miratorg’s hatchery will be expanded with 12 SmartSetPro™- 2 setters, each with a

38,400 egg capacity, as well as climate control. Pas Reform’s SmartCenterPro™ hatchery information system will provide end-to-end real-time monitoring, control and reporting across every level of hatchery operations, to enhance workflow efficiencies and quality control and deliver complete traceability for every hatch.

Pas Reform has also supported the development of the new project with engineering, technical specifications and

design, to deliver high-level bio-security throughout the hatchery.

By Gerd de Lange, Senior Poultry Specialist, Pas Reform Academy Hatcheries are found in a variety of climates, from the hot, humid tropics of South East Asia to hot, arid zones in the Middle East or the changeable climates of Central Europe or the USA. Typically, external temperature and relative humidity are subject to seasonal changes (e.g. rainy season, very cold winters) or even a day and night rhythm. The challenge is to establish whether outside air is directly suitable for incubation - and if not, how to make it fit for that purpose.

To a certain extent, setters and hatchers can deal with climatic variations to inlet air, although most incubator manufacturers specify the climate conditions under which their equipment will perform at its best.

Untreated, inlet air can be: – Too cold: this may lead to low temperature uniformity and, especially if occurring early in incubation, an extended hatch window; – Too warm: during late incubation in the setter and certainly in the hatcher, this will overwork the water cooling system, produce excessive condensation and ultimately wet floors, which will cause eggs close to the floor to become too cold; – Too dry: humidification (rotating disc, nozzles) in the incubator may compensate for this, but will cause cold spots due to localised evaporation; – Too humid: this may cause difficulties in achieving sufficient egg weight loss during incubation, which can only partially be compensated for by a higher ventilation rate and might ultimately lead to reduced hatchability and poor chick quality.

Smart and integrated: Quebec’s Couvoir Réal Côté looks to the future

Family-owned Couvoir Réal Côté, a well-known and long-

standing business in the Canadian hatchery industry, is to expand operations to 400,000 broilers per week for the

Quebec market, with a fully integrated new facility that will be built around a brand new SmartPro™ single-stage hatchery at its Ange-Gardien site.

With 12 SmartSetPro™2 incubators, 12 SmartSetPro™ 4 incubators and 14 SmartHatchPro™ hatchers, the new installation will also include a total overhaul of the

hatchery’s climate control system, with air handling units that use 100% fresh air to eliminate the need for

recirculated air and a completely new chilled water system.

The energy required for cooling from 30 to 19°C is 27.6 kJ/kg of air and subsequently heating to 25°C takes another 6.1 kJ/ kg of air.

Conditioning outside air to inlet specifications is not without cost, as demonstrated in the following two examples:

– Consult your incubator manufacturer for setter and hatcher inlet air climate specifications.

– Choose the most energy-efficient (= cheapest) combination of temperature and relative humidity within these specifications after taking outside climate into consideration.

– Ask your incubator manufacturer about available options to further reduce the energy costs for hatchery climate control.

– Do not waste expensive, pre-conditioned air: avoid overventilating your incubators and keep the doors of clean air plenums closed as much as possible.

Outside air of 10°C and 75%RH: This air contains only 5.7g water/kg of air, which means that both heating and humidification is required to bring it within climate specifications. Just heating to 21°C is not enough, because subsequently adding water by spraying or fogging causes the temperature to drop again with evaporation.

The most energy-efficient option within the climate specifications is 21°C/53%RH (= 8.2 g water/kg) and for that, the outside air should first be heated up to 27.6°C. This requires 17.8 kJ/kg of air.

Aviagen America Latina extends operations with Smart incubation Aviagen America Latina is expanding its single-stage broiler breeder hatchery at Santa Cruz das Palmeiras with an additional investment in Pas Reform’s SmartPro™ advanced hatchery technologies, increasing capacity to meet product demand from across Latin America.

Aviagen is part of the EW Group, a key player in broiler genetics worldwide. Guidelines to correct incubation programs

By Maciej Kolanczyk, Senior Hatchery Specialist, Pas Reform Hatchery Technologies Any incubation program, even when it’s successful, is never final. Sooner or later, it will have to be adapted according to changes resulting from climate, breed, egg quality, technical upgrades of setters and hatchers and numerous other factors. The need to adapt will be signaled by results in terms of hatchability and chick quality. The routine monitoring of eggshell temperature, yield and egg weight loss, for example, can provide an early warning that changes are needed.

Each hatchery operates in its specific, unique situation - and its incubation programs must also be specific, to correspond with local conditions. Adopting an incubation program that is successful for another hatchery, even one that operates in similar conditions to your own, is usually not the best option.

Before adjusting a program, it is therefore useful to answer a range of questions: – Do the incubators respond accurately to programmed set points? If not, they may simply need some maintenance or a re-calibration of sensors.

– If the problem is incidental or evident in only some of the machines, the solution is likely to be found by reviewing the maintenance of those affected.

– Can the source of the problem be established? For example, if the problem is retarded embryo development or early mortality, it may be related to the setter, or if there is increased mortality in fully developed embryos, it is likely to be the hatcher.

– Is the problem affecting all the eggs, or only certain batches? The current status of the breeder flocks may require investigation.

In short, it is important to establish why a program needs to be changed - and where the problem has arisen.

An incubation program is a complex construction: the expression of a strategy that leads to the optimum development of embryos, where every element of the program is combined and mutually influences the other.

Generally, incubation programs (strategies) aim to an apparently simple task: 1. Maintain the eggs at a stable temperature of 100.0°F in incubation, gradually increasing to not higher than 101.0°F in the last days, 2. Allow egg weight loss of 11-13%, 3. Guarantee the correct concentration of oxygen in the air and, 4. Turn the eggs regularly The aim is to achieve all this with minimal heating, cooling and humidification for energy-efficiency - and what appear

to be small changes: changing temperature set point by 0.5°F or RH by 2-3%, can make a big difference to results.

Opening ventilation a small increment further will refresh the air, but it will also decrease humidity, increase the cooling effect and force the machine to restore set points.

The questions ‘what change has been made?, ‘when?’ and ‘for how long? can transform a simple task into a complex issue. An existing program that was, until recently, delivering ‘acceptable’ results should form the skeleton of a new program, making one change at a time to assess its impact and evolve rather than revolutionize incubation programming.

Advice: – Ensure that setters and hatchers are really working to set points accurately before making changes – Follow a strict and regular maintenance routine – Avoid unrealistic set points that are beyond the capabilities of your technology – Make changes to incubation parameters one at a time, to monitor its effect – Test and repeat each new program 2-3 times on selected machines before applying generally – Keep accurate records to monitor and evaluate results – Observe the effects of changes carefully: consider naming new programs to reflect those changes.

Erpiliç installs advanced turkey hatchery to meet growing demand

Leading Turkish poultry producer Erpiliç is investing in a new, state-of-the-art turkey hatchery from Pas Reform, to meet growing demand for turkey meat.

Based in the north-western city of Bolu, the poultry capital of Turkey, Erpiliç is already one of the country’s three largest integrated poultry breeders. Its vertically integrated operation includes a feed factory, hatcheries, breeding facilities and a production plant, supported by 1,300 contract farmers and 70 dealers.

In 2016, Erpiliç acquired Bolca Hindi, which was the first Turkish company to invest in turkey meat production and it is now one of the country’s leading producers. Throughout the years Bolca Hindi has established a well-known turkey meat brand in Turkey and Erpiliç plans to develop this by increasing its production capacity by more than 300 percent, from 5,400 to 18,000 turkeys daily.

The new hatchery, located 15 km from Bolu city centre, will be equipped with Pas Reform’s most technologically advanced modular, single-stage incubation technologies, including SmartSetPro™ incubators and SmartHatchPro™ hatchers, to deliver an annual capacity of 6.25 million turkey poults.

The setters are equipped with Adaptive Metabolic Feedback (AMF™), a unique functionality that adapts the incubator environment specifically to the metabolic needs of the embryos. Energy Saving Modules (ESM™) have also been incorporated to deliver substantial savings in energy cost and greater sustainability in the hatchery’s operation. With a string of International Organization for Standardization (ISO) accreditations, including for halal production, Erpiliç is fully Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) food safety certified. Gaining a better understanding of incubation in a hatchery By: Maciej Kolanczyk, Senior Hatchery Specialist, Pas Reform Hatchery Technologies The contemporary hatchery is a complex installation. The core part is the incubators, supported by the devices that facilitate their function and auxiliary machines that reduce the demand for manual labour. Whatever the level of sophistication of the hatchery, its purpose remains the same: turning eggs into chicks in the most effective way.

The best moment to visit a hatchery is just before hatching so you can see all machinery at work for the different phases of incubation, and the newly hatched chicks too. Planning a visit at transfer time offers even more options.

A hatchery cannot improve the eggs it receives. It is easy to spoil eggs if procedures are not optimal, but good incubation can maximise the potential created on the breeder farm. A hatchery’s efficiency depends on two factors: the quality of the programs and procedures it uses – and the accuracy of their execution. The programs and procedures are an intellectual product, created from people’s knowledge and experience, and can easily be changed or corrected. But even the best program will only produce good results if it is followed closely.

Diagnosis Questions to ask to diagnose problems: – Do the incubators follow the programs accurately?

– During the entire process or just in certain periods?

– Can these periods be defined?

– Are the programs easy to execute or do they require high “technical effort” (e.g. intensive cooling, heating, humidifying)?

– Do all machines perform consistently or only some of them?

– What do the hatcher climate graphs (mainly relative humidity) look like? Are they regular or artificially “deformed” by changes in the set points?

In an optimum scenario, programs are followed closely all the time and the selected parameters can be achieved without much “effort”.

Once we know that the incubators are working correctly, it is time to verify the programs and procedures. That requires taking measurements during a visit and evaluating the hatchery’s routinely collected records. In most hatcheries many batches of eggs are incubated sequentially using the same incubation program, so it is possible to check eggshell temperatures (EST) on different days of the process.

Hatch day The hatch day is the moment to judge chicken quality and look at hatch waste: unhatched eggs and shells. The following questions are useful:

– Can we relate defects to any known measurements, e.g. egg weight loss, EST, incubation time?

– What can we learn from the hatch waste regarding height of pipping, dryness of shells and unhatched embryos?

– Are there still many live embryos in the shells?

– On what day of incubation do most embryos die?

We can use the information obtained from these observations to evaluate the incubation process and draw conclusions.

Obviously, incubation is not the only responsibility of the hatchery. Mistakes made before egg setting and after chicken take-off are also a frequent source of losses, most of which can be detected by analysing waste or obtaining feedback from clients.

Advice Short list of actions for a hatchery visit: – Review the entire procedure from the egg receiving to chicken dispatch.

– Make sure that the machines are following the program.

– If not, check the reason for this.

– Measure the EST on several different days of incubation.

– If possible, evaluate other important data, e.g. egg weight loss and chick yield.

– Check and evaluate chicken quality and hatch waste.

– Only then correct the program and try it out on 1-2 machines.

– What common defects do the chicks have: thick bellies, poor navels, red hocks, dehydration, poor uniformity, weakness or others?

Produkty Pitania Group commissions Pas Reform Russia

Produkty Pitania Group, Russia’s largest manufacturer of semi-finished, ready-to-eat and frozen poultry and poultry meat products, has commissioned Pas Reform Russia to install SmartPro™ hatchery technologies in a new state-ofthe-art, 41 million eggs per year hatchery.

The Group, which comprises LLC Produkty Pitania Plant, LLC Gusevsky canned foods and LLC TPK Baltptitseprom, has commissioned the new hatchery on its 86 hectare site in Kaliningrad region. TPK Baltptitseprom is the region’s sole producer of broiler chicken meat and chicken meat products, including semi-finished products and sausages.

SmartPro™ incubation, climate control and hatchery automation systems are included in the new installation, says Pas Reform Russia’s general director Wim Schaafsma.

“This level of technology and innovation will not only increase production efficiencies and production quality,” he says, “but it signals a new and enhanced level of development for poultry production in this region.”

While developing the project, great attention was paid, says Anna Kolygina, Pas Reform Russia’s commercial director, to achieving the highest standards of hygiene and bio-security throughout the hatchery, which is regarded as the heart of the production complex.

“The most advanced ergonomic solutions and high-quality materials are used in all hatchery equipment, which will enable Produkty Pitania Group to reduce both its maintenance and operational expenses,” she says. Pas Reform Academy will also provide ongoing support, by monitoring equipment, operations and incubation parameters and providing a full hatchery management training program at Pas Reform’s dedicated training center in the Netherlands.

Aside from the hatcheries, the integration’s onsite facilities include a feed mill, poultry farms and a new, fully automated slaughterhouse, as well as sausage production and the infrastructure to maintain such a large, modern facility.

In November 2016, expansion of the poultry complex started with the construction of a new farm incorporating 20 chicken houses, to bring total production capacity up to 26,000 tons chicken meat per year. When the expansion project is complete, that figure will rise to 36,000 tons annually, increasing meat production in Kaliningrad region by 38 per cent. The project is being implemented with the support of Rosselkhozbank and construction is due for completion in November this year.

Managing CO2 and fresh air to optimise hatchability

By Martin ‘Tiny’ Barten, Senior Hatchery Specialist, Pas Reform Hatchery Technologies Last year I was invited to a layer hatchery that was reporting slightly lower hatchability than its sister hatcheries, despite using eggs from the same flocks with the same pre-setting treatment.

The hatchery was using several generations of incubators, from very old to relatively new machines. Hatchabilities had not been assigned to machine type, which complicated my investigation, and one common issue was that none of the setters could achieve unrealistically high humidity set points. This was partially due to very dry inlet air, which forced the setters’ humidifiers to work constantly and created cold spots that extended the hatch window.

On day two of my visit there was a hatch. While I was very pleased with chick quality, a breakout of unhatched eggs from various machines revealed too many embryos dying just before internal pipping. Air cells were large enough and the embryos had a normal, dry appearance, so this was not due to insufficient weight loss. What then was the cause?

1) Fine-tune valve set points on measured CO2 values: aim for 0.5% immediately after transfer, to a maximum of 0.8% at the onset of hatch and reducing again when the hatch is complete. For older hatchers without CO2 sensors, my advice was to increase valve positions, to create a similar profile from transfer to the completion of hatch,

Studying climate graphs from recent hatcher cycles revealed that although the newest hatchers were equipped with CO2 sensors, these were not being used to automatically control fresh air supply. Instead, these modern hatchers were being managed traditionally, using stepped set-point increases to position the air valve. The CO2 line in the climate graph showed much higher values than recommended, ranging from 0.8% right after transfer to over 1% - and at times, even higher values than the sensor could measure (> 1.3 %). When I shared these findings with the hatchery manager, we agreed that these high CO2 levels were the most likely cause of late embryo mortality and I suggested two remedial options:

Initially the hatchery manager chose the first option, which was more familiar to him. However some months later, he called to tell me that my second suggestion, using automatic valve control in the newest hatchers, was much easier and, more importantly, that hatchability was now consistently “very good”.

The animal-friendly counter, which has been in operation in the broiler industry for over six years, has been adapted in a joint process that for the first time enables the counting and analysing of day old turkey poults. SmartCount™

analyzes the quality of the poults in terms of individual weight estimation and uniformity distribution, with a

calculation of the coefficient of variance as an indication of flock quality and uniformity.

Willmar / AG Forte embarked on this joint development project with Pas Reform over a year ago, to deliver an innovative poult counter in Willmar’s operations. The

company was looking for an animal-friendly, high capacity

counter that could handle 60,000 day old poults per hour, to an accuracy of +/- 5 per 1000 - and seeing SmartCount™

operating in broiler facilities sparked the idea for the joint development.

SmartCount™ turkey does not need to individualize day old poults. As the first counter that uses vision technology to count groups of poults, it analyses the circumferences of individuals, estimate their weights and produces a

uniformity curve for poults counted based on the images collected by the camera.

Grupo Valouro has commissioned a new, fully integrated hatchery from Pas Reform for Sociedade Agricola da Quinta da Freiria SA in Portugal.

Located in Torres Vedras, 50km north of Lisbon, Grupo Valouro is one of the country’s largest poultry producers and employs 2,500 people at its 36 animal feed and poultry production companies. It exports fresh and frozen products to more than 20 countries in Europe, Africa, Asia and the Middle East, and has ambitious plans to open up new markets.

The new installation at Sociedade Agricola da Quinta da Freira will include 36 SmartSetPro™-4 setters with a capacity of 88,128 hatching eggs each and 30 SmartHatchPro™ hatchers, to deliver an annual capacity of 200 million day old chicks.

The modular, single-stage design of SmartPro™, combined with the adoption of Pas Reform’s space-saving 162 setter tray allows incubation conditions to be fully optimised to specific profiles for each batch of eggs set. This maximises chick uniformity and also enables a large hatching capacity to be achieved in a small footprint.

Each setter will be equipped with Pas Reform’s Adaptive Metabolic Feedback (AMF™), to ensure that the incubation environment meets the metabolic needs of each developing embryo. AMF™ delivers precise, adaptive control over humidity and CO2 during the incubation process – according to the time-varying metabolism of a specific batch of embryos. When the hatchery power supply fails

by Maciej Kolanczyk, Senior Hatchery Specialist, Pas Reform In a contemporary hatchery all the parameters influencing incubation – such as temperature, humidity, ventilation and the turning of eggs – are based on using electricity. Stopping of the energy supply means that the pumps and fans do not work, heating and cooling does not function and the air in the incubators cannot be refreshed.

In closed machines, eggs incubated for more than 9-10 days will tend to overheat – especially in a single stage machine.

Embryos of 15 days or more may suffocate. This occurs quickly. In a non-running closed hatcher most embryos and chicks will die within 30 minutes.

A lack of electricity also means no light in the building, no air conditioning in the rooms and the malfunction of all auxiliary devices used for hatchery operations.

Today’s modern hatchery cannot operate without electricity and as a power cut will happen sooner or later, staff must know how to deal with it. The only structural solution is the installation of an emergency power generator. An automatic starting device will immediately replace the power supply.

This technical solution is effective and safe, but only if the generator functions properly.

Potentially huge losses resulting from a power cut justifies any investment in a reliable electricity back-up system. If the system works – no special action is needed. Regular maintenance and testing of the generator, including a regular check on the fuel reserve, are an essential part of the hatchery operation.

If there is no back-up system the risk related to the lack of an electricity supply has different grades and priorities depending on the incubation phase. The very first objective is to save the life of the embryos. The most urgent, immediate requirement of advanced embryos is respiration.

The more advanced their development the more urgent the demand. The lack of cooling worsens the situation and leads to overheating.

The eggs in the hatchers are exposed to the most risk and deserve first priority. These relatively small cabinets are filled exclusively with embryos in their final stage and hatched chicks. They need a lot of fresh air and must be attended to quickly.

Next, the setters containing mostly developed embryos, especially in a single-stage incubation system, should be attended to.

Embryos below 10 days of incubation can wait. Temporary, limited cooling down will mainly influence the incubation time but will not kill the embryos at this stage.

Advice What do you do if there is no power and no back-up generator?

– Make sure the staff is prepared, instructed and trained.

People on duty must know what to do rather than look for instructions in the face of an existing problem.

– If there is no UPS system backing up the computers and screens – have notes available documenting the load of the setters.

– Manual portable torches should always be in working condition and available from a fixed, easily accessible place.

– Give priority to hatchers and then setters with embryos at 15 days and more. Drive out trolleys and space them in the room between the machines or at other places, such as the chick handling room or even the dispatch room. Open all doors to create a natural air flow in the building.

– For embryos at 10-15 days, just open the doors of the setter.

– For embryos < 10 days: do nothing; keep the setters closed.

– Consider purchasing an emergency generator to be better prepared for the next time.

Koch Foods develops USA’s largest single stage hatchery Chicago-based Koch Foods, the USA’s 5th largest poultry integrator, has chosen Pas Reform and NatureForm to completely renovate its Henagar hatchery in Alabama. When completed, Henagar will be the largest fully integrated, single stage broiler hatchery in the Western Hemisphere.

Pas Reform and its US partner, NatureForm Hatchery Technologies, will install 84 SmartSetPro™ setters with a capacity of 132,192 eggs each and 92 SmartHatchPro™hatchers, each with a capacity of 22,032 hatching eggs, to create a weekly setting capacity of more than 3.7 million eggs.

As a fully integrated project, the contract also includes work to renovate Henagar’s climate control and automation systems. A complete new HVAC system has been designed for the hatchery, with 14 Daikin air handling units that use 100% outside air and air handlers equipped with the latest UV disinfection system. Boilers and chillers will also be replaced, including the addition of modern primary and secondary heat recovery systems, to make the hatchery one of the most energy efficient in North America.

A new hatchery automation system is designed to process 800,000 day old chicks in an eight-hour operating day. To achieve this, the system incorporates three transfer candling lines with individual stacking, destacking and clear egg removal; a double chick take-off line with destackers, separators and innovative, animal-friendly SmartCount™ chick counters.

SmartCenterPro™ hatchery information software will superconnect data from the entire hatchery, from the realtime monitoring and historic recording of Incubator climates, to the monitoring, counting and analysis of embryos and chick uniformity data gathered from hatchery automation processes.

Training in the USA: hands-on knowledge sharing in hatchery management

Training is a unique contributor to Pas Reform’s rapid growth across the USA and Canada and, earlier this year, a group of 14 hatchery professionals came together to take part in a three-day Hatchery Management Training programme.

Hosted by NatureForm, the course was delivered by Pas Reform Academy and included access to House of Raeford’s fully integrated new hatchery in South Carolina. The course is not limited to customers of NatureForm and Pas Reform, although delegates must work in a managerial or senior role with responsibility for day-to-day hatchery management. On this occasion, attendance included delegates from leading hatcheries and a vaccine supplier.

The importance of people “We may all recognise the increasing role of automation and data-based software and systems in the modern hatchery,” says course director Gerd de Lange, “but people are vital to the success of any hatchery operation.

“It takes good, up-to-date knowledge, high levels of skill and not least a positive, proactive attitude to deliver optimal production results. Machines and clever systems are only as good as the people operating them and translating results to fine-tune performance.”

Importance of hatchery management highlighted at Ross Africa Seminar Ross Africa, the distributor of Ross® Parent Stock for SubSaharan Africa, demonstrated its commitment to customers at its recent Hatchery Management Seminar. Held in Lusaka, Zambia, from April 10 to April 12 the event highlighted the importance of good egg handling from farm to hatchery.

The seminar is organized annually by Ross Africa, specifically for its Sub-Saharan customers, and every second year focuses on hatchery management, with training delivered by Pas Reform Academy. The Ross Middle East and Africa Customer Focus Team was represented by Sales Manager Bulent Tanyildizi and senior Technical Manager Robert Haggarty, who work closely with Ross Africa throughout the year.

Raymond Laing, technical director Ross Africa, explained, “First-class chicks require first-class care, and that’s why our hatchery training is so important. Chick performance can only be maximized when every aspect of management is carefully considered. Good hatchery management, the focus of this seminar, is a central component of this. Held at Ross Africa’s flagship broiler hatchery, presentations and practical interactive sessions were designed to train the trainer and ensure best practices are transferred from the customer back to their own organizations. The participants investigated and discussed a range of topics including, “What Are Good Hatchery Results – Commitment to High Hatchability,” “Optimal Egg Quality from Breeder Farm to Hatchery,” and “Energy Efficient Hatchery Climate Control and Ventilation in Different Climate Zones.”
