Welcome to Okeechobee County!
Okeechobee County is a water-rich environment community full of friendly people. Whether you are visiting here for business or vacation, we welcome you and your family to enjoy the vast amenities our community offers. Okeechobee County sits on the northern shore of beautiful Lake Okeechobee. Our county is known for agricultural-based businesses, and over time we have evolved into a diverse tourist destination. Anglers from around the world know Lake Okeechobee as “The Bass Capital of the World” for good reason. Fishing Lake Okeechobee provides the only place where an amateur can catch as many fish over five pounds and feel like a pro. Okeechobee County has other exceptional recreational opportunities including camping, biking, hiking, rodeos and bird watching. Kissimmee Prairie Preserve is a land dominated by the great blue sky and the darkest nights, where stars flood the night sky. The preserve, part of the Everglades headwaters, protects the largest remaining tract of Florida dry prairie, an ecosystem shaped by cycles of flooding and fire. Many rare, threatened and endangered species call this place home, and the wide-open landscape means that birdwatchers and photographers have ample opportunity to catch sight of a grasshopper sparrow, crested caracara or burrowing owl. Internationally recognized for its lack of light pollution, the night sky above the prairie is inky black—campers can spot the Milky Way without using telescopes or binoculars. Visitors can step off of the beaten path and savor the unspoiled beauty that meets your eye around every corner of our county. We welcome you to experience the country atmosphere of a truly unique corner of Florida. Terry Burroughs, Chairman

The Tourist Development Tax allows the Tourism Coordinator and Tourist Development Council Advisory Board to find unique and creative ways to promote our community to inspire visitors to come and explore. The mission statement for the TDC is as follows: The Tourist Development Council promotes Okeechobee County as a desirable tourist destination by funding marketing campaigns and local events that enhance Okeechobee’s economy while preserving natural resources and the quality of life. This mission speaks to our conscientious preservation of Old Florida’s natural beauty and “down home” hospitality. The TDC is a single-person department within Okeechobee County supported by a group of individuals that
volunteer their time to participate as an Advisory Board to ensure fiscal responsibility of the Tourist Development Tax as well as to discuss tourism-related issues or opportunities. The TDC develops marketing campaigns and plans as well as hosts community events that have strong economic impacts to Okeechobee. The TDC is also the visitor’s resource for local events, businesses, attractions and exploration. The Tourist Development Council office is now in a building with the Chamber of Commerce, which has been rebranded as the Visitor Center located at the main intersection of town. The Okeechobee County TDC has a number of local and state partners with whom we work to promote our community.

Re-enactment of the Second Seminole War
Ever since General Andrew Jackson’s controversial excursions into West Florida, circa 1816, the United States had been embroiled in a series of Seminole Wars with the state’s Native Americans. The conflict came to Lake Okeechobee on Christmas Day 1837, in what would become the largest and deadliest battle of the Second Seminole War. Colonel Zachary Taylor arrived at what was then an inhospitable sawgrass swamp with orders to “destroy or capture” the enemy. He deployed his regiment, which included more than 800 troops, outnumbering the Seminoles two to one. Taylor favored Napoleonic tactics, and was willing to sacrifice many of his men in favor of brute power in numbers. Taylor reported that 28 men died, including one of his top generals, and 111 whites were wounded. The Seminoles lost 11 of their own, with 14 wounded, before they retreated, and Taylor asserted victory. A monument commemorating the battle is featured prominently on the grounds of the Okeechobee Battlefield Historic State Park. The Okeechobee Battlefield Friends host a re-enactment of the battle annually, on the last weekend of February. A strong Seminole presence remains in South Central Florida; modern-day Seminoles live on a large reservation called Brighton, 17 miles west of Okeechobee. Basinger, an early community named after the fort Taylor named during the war, was established in the

1860s, when brothers Arthur and Thomas Daughtry established a homestead here. Other important pioneers include Henry L. Parker, a ferryman who settled in 1870 and sold his land to Noel Rabun Raulerson four years later. The first white family, Peter and Louisiana Chandler Raulerson, came to Okeechobee in 189 6. The 189 9 -vintage log cabin that housed Raulerson’s family is in the process of being converted into a museum by the Historical Society. The area’s pioneers established industries that would prop up Okeechobee’s economy—sawmills, sugarcane mills, cattle farms, dairy farms, orange groves, commercial fishing— many of which still drive business in Okeechobee today. Lewis Raulerson, son of Noel, opened the area’s first general store in 19 05, and children studied, under a single teacher, at a one-room schoolhouse made of rough timber. Visitors can tour this structure, which is part of the Historical Society Museum. In their leisure time, early residents hosted “frolicks” and fished in Lake O, still one of the county’s prized pastimes. “According to early lore, the fishermen and the cowboys fought,” says Magi Cable, president of the Historical Society; in lieu of a jailhouse, troublemakers were penned up in a boxcar overnight. Cable likens the atmosphere to “a wild frontier.”

2,500 deaths and $25 million in damage. But residents and civic leadership rebounded, building the Herbert Hoover Dam over the next three decades to prevent this level of damage from future storms. Other landmarks include the first cattlemen’s rodeo in 1951, in a rodeo arena that still hosts rodeos today. McArthur Dairy, Florida’s largest privately-owned dairy farm, opened in Okeechobee in 1959. These days, it is not common to find more cattle than people in Florida but per the 2012 Census of Agriculture, this is indeed the case in Okeechobee. The Historical Society of Okeechobee, located at 1850 U.S. Highway 9 8 N., is open Thursdays from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. For information, call Magi Cable at 863.763.8667.

It wasn’t until the mid-19 10s, when Henry Flagler’s railroad snaked through Okeechobee, that the population began to increase, and business and tourism spiked. The City of Okeechobee would be established in 1915, with the county designation following two years later. Also in 1915, one of the area’s first doctors, Anna Darrow, arrived; she was just the second woman in the state to become a certified physician. The building housing the business she started with her husband, Park Drugs, still stands. The county received its first major setback in 1928 with the landfall of the San Felipe Segundo hurricane, one of the deadliest hurricanes in recorded history. Lake Okeechobee
Lake Okeechobee is, in fact, the second-largest natural freshwater lake in the contiguous United States, second only to Lake Michigan. It spans 730 square miles in the center of the Sunshine State, and is approximately half the size of Rhode Island. At least seven rivers, streams, creeks and sloughs flow into the lake, and Okeechobee County is one of five counties in Florida surrounding its perimeter. The earliest references to the lake date to the 16th century, as reported by Hernando de Escalante Fontaneda, a Spanish shipwreck survivor who lived among Florida’s indigenous peoples for 17 years. In the 18th and 19 th centuries, Lake O went by numerous names, including Laguna de Espiritu Santo, and Lake Mayaca, named after COME OUTSIDE & PLAY

the Mayaca tribe; Port Mayaca, on the lake’s eastern side, preserves this early designation. Lake Okeechobee is vital to Florida’s environment. It provides flood and risk management, agricultural irrigation, salinity and regional groundwater control, and water supply for municipalities and industries throughout the surrounding region. The lake provides habitat for fish and wildlife, including the thriving largemouth bass, crappie and bluegill. And, of course, recreation is central to the Lake’s singular appeal: As you’ll learn in the following pages, airboat tours, fishing expeditions and gator hunts are popular activities for visitors and residents alike. Nature enthusiasts love to get “L.O.S.T.” on the Lake Okeechobee Scenic Trail, which winds around a 100-foot-wide dike surrounding the lake. Wellmaintained and mostly paved, the trail is part of the National Scenic

Trail system, and is a favorite excursion for hikers and bicyclists. Lake O has long held a place in popular culture, both in Florida and throughout the nation. It was featured in the 19 51 adventure film “Distant Drums,” starring Gary Cooper, and famed novelist Zora Neale Hurston set part of her masterpiece Their Eyes Were Watching God in Lake Okeechobee. Writing about the lake’s immense size, she wrote of “Big Lake Okechobee, big beans, big cane, big weeds, big everything.” Even horror and science fiction stories have spotlighted Lake O; the giant body of water made cameos in “American Horror Story” and “Star Trek: Enterprise.” Read on for more about the fish and bird life visible in Lake Okeechobee, as well as the bounty of visitor activities this great lake provides. Inside Cattleman’s Square
A new art project will celebrate Okeechobee’s rich and ongoing heritage in the cattle industry. Cattleman’s Square, which is scheduled to be installed in Flagler Park (55 S.E. Third Ave.) in February 2022, will be a landmark for the county’s public art profile: A $500,000, privately funded, 10-piece sculpture project initiated by Okeechobee Main Street. In 2018, the organization commissioned artist J. Michael Wilson, a Utah sculptor known for his realistic, accurately scaled bronzes, to take on this massive endeavor. When completed, it will transport spectators to a classic cattle ranch, with an information kiosk exploring each individual work. In this conversation, Wilson tells us more about his inspiration for the project. What appeals to you about this project? My life has taken me in several directions over the years. At the age of 7, I was invited to a cattle branding in Colorado where my cousin worked. He was one of those guys who looked and lived like the cowboys you’d see in Westerns. That was the image I wanted for my life. The following year I was 16
OKEECHOBEE COUNTY OFFICIAL VISITORS GUIDE
invited back to participate with a new crop of cattle, all needing shots, branding and castration. To this day, I can still recall the sights and sounds— but mostly the smell—of burnt hide and disinfectant. By the age of 8, my parents bought me my first horse. As I grew older and more experienced, my interest involved breeding and raising (small scale of course) quarter and thoroughbred horses. This would continue for the next 25 years. At 18, I went to college to become a large animal veterinarian. That lasted for 3 years when it became obvious I had a problem with the sight of blood. This put a huge wrench in my plans. Now at the age of 21, I needed to figure out how I could live my passion and make a living. I liked open space and being around livestock, and there was always a silent interest in making things. But one thing was for sure, I did not want to be an artist. All I knew about them at the time was they were either dead or starving! I needed to have a serious talk with my dad. He told me, “God has given you a gift; use it!” I did not know much about art but was determined to figure it out. I have
always thought if you looked long enough at something, you could recreate it. Making cows, horses, and people out of clay would not involve blood, so why not give it a try? Can you tell us about each of the 10 pieces and what they will represent? Having a story to tell is a good place to start. From there you figure out a design that gets the message of your story told. For the Cattleman’s Square project, we wanted to depict a common setting that every rancher could relate to: moving the herd. The mounted wrangler on his horse, assisted by his hardworking, focused cur dog. The proud Brahma bull present while the cows pass by. Also in the setting is a heifer who has recently delivered her newly born calf. Watching all the activities and excitement is the owner/breeder of the cattle operation. One can imagine he is probably assessing each animal and grading the herd. Living and working in Utah, do you feel a kind of kinship with Okeechobee—an understanding of the environment and culture here? I like open space. I need room to think with few distractions. As I’ve
gotten older, this early trait seems to become harder to find these days. I need to be relatively close to the foundry on this project because of its size and number of pieces. That, plus the surrounding area, suits my pace and way of living. It still has a smalltown feel, yet within minutes of high-tech business. Every day my drive into the studio takes me past a large herd of Texas longhorns, small horse farms, and a few produce stands. Where do you find that these days—perhaps Lake Okeechobee? What do you hope will be your work’s permanent impact on Okeechobee? My hope for this project and Okeechobee is to leave a lasting reminder of the importance provided by local cattle owners and breeders from the last 500 years—a rare breed of community, integrity and pride. As the world is rapidly changing, it’s important to know our roots. I believe it’s important to have a hands-on approach to fine art with access available to all. Everything will be placed in a beautiful setting, enjoyed all year long, offering the enjoyment of one of Florida’s finest environments. COME OUTSIDE & PLAY

As soon as DJ and musician Julio Santo Domingo stepped foot inside Sunshine Grove—an impossibly green, 800-acre sprawl of sweeping grasslands, pine and palmetto jungles, lakes and waterways that’s roughly the size of New York’s Central Park—he knew he had found the location for his dream festival. “When I walked into Sunshine Grove, I realized how beautiful a property it was,” he says. “That, combined with the full support of the county officials, and also the fact that Okeechobee is centrally located within a few hours of Orlando, Miami, Tampa, Gainesville and more, I knew it would be a good fit for the festival. There’s a huge pool of people, all around Okeechobee, and that created the perfect ingredient that would give us the highest chances for success.” Since co-founding the Okeechobee Music + Arts Festival in 2016, 20

Santo Domingo has witnessed its enormous growth in interest and prestige. While attendees from the aforementioned Sunshine State metropolises attend every festival, he has sold tickets to countries as far-flung as Fiji, Australia, Indonesia and pretty much “every corner of the Earth, short of Antarctica.” They attend for the music with a another lineup that traverses the worlds of electronic, rock, pop and R&B music, with headliners Tame Impala, Porter Robinson, Megan Thee Stallion, Rezz and Griz leading a bill that is more than 100 artists deep. “We offer a diverse lineup,” Santo Domingo says. “A lot of festivals are very genre-specific. We have some psych-rock, some hip-hop, underground techno and house music, EDM, some reggae from time to time.”
Okeechobee Music Festival

But, as Santo Domingo has noticed, the festival’s following is so loyal that the general atmosphere of the fest, and the relationships it nurtures, are as strong a draw as the A-list talent. “They feel a sense of belonging year after year,” he says. “Some people carve hearts on tree trunks and come back next year, and the hearts are still there. We take great care in carefully maintaining the whole plot of land by preserving the nature and enhancing the facility year after year. We have married more than 25 couples at the festival. We’re not just a business but a lifestyle, attracting positivity to each and everyone.” That positive vibe extends beyond its multiple cutting-edge performance stages, and into its non-music-related attractions: the immersive art installations and light shows; the swimming pond at “Aquachobee Beach;” the
yoga classes, wellness workshops, guest speakers and vendor market; and the “Jive Joint,” a so-called “psychedelic vaudeville” full of comedians, improv classes and more. Santo Domingo adds that when you purchase tickets to the festival, you’re also supporting vital Okeechobee nonprofits. The festival has directly donated more than $370,000 to the community since its inception, benefiting organizations such as the Treasure Coast Food Bank, Martha’s House, Okeechobee Main Street, Thank You For Your Service Big Brothers Big Sisters of Okeechobee County, and the Okeechobee Substance Abuse Coalition. CAMPGROUNDS There’s nothing quite like falling asleep to the sound of the natural world buzzing pleasantly along outside a self-erected shelter. The canvas snaps in the breeze off the water, and the night creatures croak, call and click their stories under the Milky Way. Fireflies buzz to and fro, illuminating the inky darkness with the stuff of fairy tales, and dreams are in abundance as the fresh air fills you with wonder and whimsy. The weather is a huge factor in the choice of camping vacation, but in Florida, all you need to worry about is which side of the lake you would like to
see next. You might also want to consider your priorities—whether you want a palm-fringed grove, an oak forest, a prairie, a dock to dip your toes in the water or a levee frontage all to yourself. The staff makes half of the dessert offerings in-house, with the rest contributed by renowned local chain Hoffman’s Chocolates. HISTORY WITH A VIEW
John Campbell has been fishing Lake Okeechobee for more than 65 years. So when he retired from Bell South in the early 2000s, he decided to put his first-hand knowledge of the lake to a new use: as a pontoon boat captain. These days, Campbell tours visitors around the lake in his comfortable, six-personoccupancy pontoon, in which he discusses the story of Lake O, how it was formed, the region’s Seminole Wars and its rich history of dairy and cattle farming. He also points out the lake’s teeming wildlife, and introduces passengers to such quirky fauna as apple snail eggs, which, as he points out, resemble pink bubblegum. Unlike the relatively high speed of airboat rides, Campbell’s tours are quiet, leisurely, and a great way to watch the sun set over the lake. He encourages his guests to bring their own provisions—wines, cheeses and other snacks—to enhance the experience. Tours run 90 minutes, and cost $50 per person. Call 863.532.1720.

Okeechobee offers a myriad of opportunities to spot birds in glorious flight over the glittering surface of Lake O. Paul Gray, science coordinator of Audubon Florida’s Everglades Restoration Program, puts the region’s picturesque and convenient Lock 7 at the top of his list: “It is quite good lakeside birding, and the sunset flights of birds to roost on Eagle Bay Island can be spectacular,” he says. Okeechobee County has three other locations on the Great Florida Birding Trail, which attracts birders from around the world. Kissimmee Prairie Preserve, Florida’s largest state park, brings in more than 150 avian species, thanks to its diverse mix of dry and wet prairie, freshwater marshes, oak and sabal palm hammocks, pine flatwoods, swamps and riparian habitats. It is open from 8 a.m. until sundown. Okee-Tantie Recreation Area, open 24 hours a day, offers one of the few locations to experience Lake O from the shore, and it is a familiar haunt for wood storks, songbirds, woodpeckers and great blue herons. The Taylor Creek Stormwater Treatment Area is open sunrise to sunset, and it’s a little-known destination for everything from crested caracaras and glossy ibises to limpkins and roseate spoonbills, each visible at various junctures along a three-mile walking/biking path during fall, winter and spring. Bring your binoculars: Here are just a few of the native birds that make frequent cameos in Okeechobee County.

While weather can be harsh elsewhere, Lake Okeechobee offers that true Florida weather throughout the year. From November through May, your chances of catching the bass of a lifetime or some of the finest daily limits of crappie, bluegill or shell cracker are the best they will be all year. Areas such as King’s Bar, The Monkey Box, Observation Shoal and the J and S areas are some of the most popular areas to check out. While in those areas, also keep your eyes open for wading birds, nesting birds, alligators and manatees. You never can tell what you may see or hear while on or around The Big “O.” Stop by one of the three local tackle shops, such as Okeechobee Fishing Headquarters, Garrard’s Tackle or Fast Break Bait and Tackle, for all the local knowledge you need to make Lake Okeechobee one of your outdoor destinations for years to come.

PLAY TIME
For 42 years, Okeechobee Community Theatre has been entertaining visitors and residents with comedies, dramas and musicals showcasing talented Florida actors in a 220seat facility. Specializing in reasonably priced fare suitable for the entire family, the company has produced such classics as “Brigadoon,” “Hello Dolly!” and “Deathtrap.”
Following a two-year pause during the pandemic, the company will mark its return to live theatre in Spring 2022 with “Arsenic and Old Lace,” one of the great screwball comedies of the 1930s, with a large and bustling cast portraying murderess old spinsters, a Boris Karloff look-alike and a man who believes he is Theodore Roosevelt. The season is expected to continue in Fall 2022 with a more serious-minded drama, Aaron Sorkin’s “A Few Good Men,” which, like the film it inspired, concerns a conspiracy guarded at the highest levels of the military and exposed during a monumental court-martial. For specific showtimes, information and to purchase tickets, please call the theatre 863.332.2053 or visit okeechobeecommunitytheatre.com. Over the past 15 years, Okee-

chobee has undergone a cultural renaissance, with local artist Bridgette Waldau leading the effort. President of the Okeechobee Main Street Arts & Culture Alliance of Okeechobee County, Waldau has most recently been instrumental in opening Okeechobee’s first-ever arts center. The Arts & Culture Alliance Art Gallery, at 111 N.E. Second St., opened in November 2020 and houses more than 100 works of art in a variety of mediums, along with art classes and a gift shop. The Arts & Culture Alliance has likewise spearheaded public art projects that are free for the public to enjoy—and which make for vibrant photo ops! At the beautiful Butterfly Sculpture Project in the Hamrick Butterfly Garden in Flagler Park, in downtown Okeechobee, local artists and students painted eight large metal butterflies, each of them reflecting the artist’s individual style—from sunflower colors to gentle pastels to psychedelic hues. Speaking of stunning outdoor sculptures, don’t miss “Ready to Run,” an abstract horse sculpture scaling 10 feet in height and weighing 2,900 pounds, which stands proudly outside the Okeechobee County Public Library, at 206 S.W. 16th St. Okeechobee’s Mural Program, also part of the Arts Alliance, has revi-
Arts & Culture talized historic buildings and drawn attention to the county’s legacy through an ongoing series of wall-sized murals. Sharing a connection to Okeechobee’s history, the murals depict cattle drives, ranching life, the Native American population, the arrival of Henry Flagler’s railroad to the area, Okeechobee’s first telephone company and hardware store, and more. Five murals are currently on view downtown; two others are visible east of Highway 441. Visual art hangs year-round inside the county courthouse, with rotating exhibitions by local established and emerging artists. Exhibition themes have included “Okeechobee Wildlife and Nature,” “Country Life” and “Smithsonian Waterways & Guy Harvey.” Annual events such as the Top of the Lake Art Festival and the Art & Wine Walk have further established Okeechobee as an arts destination.
