Our Cover: Kenilworth artist Elli Schlunke has entered this woolly mammoth, “Mammuthus,” in the Sculpture on the Edge exhibition in a wonderful forest setting at Spicers Tamarind Retreat near Maleny. She spent over 6 months making him. Both friends & complete strangers, donated old extension cords, which she stripped out so she could use the coloured copper wires as the fur. There must be well over a kilometre and a half of old power cords in his fur layer. The inside is made from a steel frame, various layers of different wire meshes (including nearly a whole recycled chook pen, which led to his nick-name “Tjuk-penh.”) This was covered in shade-cloth, then another layer of different mesh for latching on the fur. Many of the materials are recycled. He weighs approx 200 kg. He will last indefinitely out of the sun but even in the sun he should be still smiling in 25 years’ time. He is for sale and stands nearly 2 metres tall. Photograph by Stuart Duncan. So excited to present our MOCK magazine, a collaboration of local artists, showcasing creativity, culture and community. Pastiche is a free seasonal magazine distribution from the Hinterlands of the Sunshine Coast, along the Coast and into Brisbane inner city areas and arts & cultural precedents. Pastiche accepts freelance art, photos and story submissions.

ART ON THE EDGE Strolling through the beautiful grounds of Spicers Tamarind Retreat in Maleny in Autumn to view the sculptural installations along the rainforest tracks or scattered artistically around the gardens has been a favourite pursuit of lovers of art since 2011. This hugely popular program of Arts Connect is on again at Tamarind Retreat Maleny from September 13 to October 18. Only this year the interest from South East Queensland sculptors has been even hotter than ever as the Spicers Sculpture Award is now $10,000 and second prize $1500 with both winners announced at the Opening on September 23. A catalogue is available at Tamarind Reception where staff will welcome you to their beautiful ground seven days a week. Arts Connect’s partner program Open Studios has morphed also into a longer and more accessible Hinterland art experience. Instead of a rich smorgasbord of studios open in September, too rich to be seen in one day, visitors will now find from 5 to 8 studios open from 1Oam to 4pm on the last weekend of every month of the year! This will give lovers of art more time to engage with the artists and time to visit other Hinterland locations without being rushed. So plan your trips for the last weekend and you will always find a few studios to welcome you.

Tasting THE COAST

There is a delicious thread that weaves many of the Sunshine Coast’s diverse areas together. The thread of outstanding food with beautiful ingredients, brought together with creative foodie minds. From misty treed mountains to sun kissed beaches the landscape is as diverse as the foods produced and crafted here. From the cheese filled heart of Kenilworth to the seafood fresh breezes of Mooloolaba there is something tantalising and tasty everywhere you look. A drive through the breathtaking Hinterland reveals rolling green pastures and tastes of our incredible dairy goods such as Trevor Heart’s buffalo haloumi, Maleny Cheese factory and Maleny Dairies which has you tasting for yourself why their cream is so popular with our regions’ chefs. A short trip Down the mountain on a day trip to the quaint Yandina and your taste buds burst alive with the possibilities of Ginger at the Ginger factory. Ginger with a history of being grown right

here on the coast that has gone on to spark many local food products and recipes. Your Yandina food journey continues right across the road as you discover the health boosting deliciousness of the local macadamias you can hear rolling about in the machines at Nutworks. Whether you’re picking your own giant fresh strawberries at Strawberry Fields or buying farming family Jeffers Market’s avocados you can become connected to the coast’s foodie soul through the ingredients and foods you discover. Food is considered by many here as a bit of an art form with award winning chefs and their restaurants, food festivals and events, raw cafés, funky eateries and wonderful local products. It takes but a day to realise that food is as tied to the good folk of the Sunshine Coast as the mountains and ocean that frame the region. Rebecca Mugridge

Cr Jenny McKay’s Feature for the Arts Visual art is leading the charge in a combined program of activities being rolled out by Sunshine Coast Council in partnership with the creative industry across the region. Councillor Jenny McKay said there is literally something for everyone in the Region from the Hinterland to the Coast and from Eumundi to Caloundra.“While Arts Connect Inc. is showcasing their incredible Sculpture on the Edge at Spicers Tamarind Retreat, Maleny, further north, the Eumundi Foundation’s Sculpture Prize is showcasing models of the exciting pieces entered into this iconic award.” Cr McKay said. “West from there, the Kenilworth Arts Council’s Painting Prize will showcase some of our best 20 artists- and we haven’t even mentioned the four different awards and exhibitions led by Council. “The exciting new Holmes Art Prize with realistic depictions of birdlife and the Local Artists Local Content awards, led by the Friends of Caloundra Gallery Inc., were exhibited recently with impressive attendance numbers and artwork sales - and plans are already underway for next year’s exhibition. “All of these prizes and exhibitions have partnered with the 2015 Sunshine Coast Art Prize to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the prestigious competition that has proven to be a driver and profile builder for the creative industry here on the Sunshine Coast. “And there is no doubt that this “festival of the arts” is attracting national attention and kudos with both

entries to the awards and visitors viewing the exhibitions coming from all over Australia.” Cr McKay said the high profile visual arts program was a dynamic precursor to a huge number of events and celebrations including the Caloundra Music Festival and Fringe Festival which will see the whole of Caloundra come alive for the last week of September and the first week of October. “Add Unframed Coolum which to the mix, will see Coolum become a curated public installation with laneways and buildings showcasing work from local established and emerging artists, and there is no doubt that the Sunshine Coast is becoming a cultural mecca,” Cr McKay said. Check out Council’s website for more information on how to take part in these and other great creative projects and events across the Coast.

One of the subjects I found most interesting at university, and, full disclosure, the one I did most poorly in, was Neural Networks; Computer systems modelled on the human brain. The key difference between neural networks and “traditional” computer programs is that neural networks are trained rather than programmed to perform their task. A typical computer program is great at doing tasks like searching through a set of encyclopaedias to find information for you. I spent a bit of time trying to come up with a good analogy for the kind of dumb but powerful work that computers do, and I struggled, because the thing is, computers actually do all those tasks now. When is the last time you searched for something in a set of encyclopaedias? Possibly you have never even seen a set of encyclopaedias. I was going to keep a set to pass on to my children, but after a couple of moves it seemed ridiculous to keep something so large for a such a small amount of sentimental value. But I digress. Neural nets are good at the more human tasks; recognising faces, or understanding human speech. Google Images uses a neural net to be able to search for pictures of things based on the words you type in. They have indexed millions of images, tagging them with words, like “red”, “dog”, “picnic” and the neural net begins to make it’s own connections between the patterns in images that are all tagged with “dog”, and so it eventually learns pretty well what a dog

& THE ARTS

looks like. After that the neural net doesn’t need humans to tell it there is a dog in a certain picture, it can figure it out for itself. So you can go to images.google.com and type in “dog” and it gives you a bunch of pictures that have dogs in them. Now, some creative engineers at Google recently came up with the idea of having a look inside their vast image neural net, by asking it to output a picture of what it is seeing after having begun to apply its recognition process to an image. It’s like showing a picture to your friend, then asking them to draw what they saw; the picture they draw for you reveals some of the original picture, and some of the thoughts that arose in your friend’s mind. It tells you a bit about how they think. The images produced by this process are best described as psychedelic ... a stream of computerised consciousness, “I see

an eye, I think I see a dog, I see a dog, I see an eye, colours”. These images are being tagged with the hashtag #deepdream. See: https://mobile.twitter.com/hashtag/ deepdream You can now even upload your own pictures & see what Google neural net sees at http://deepdreamgenerator.com The title for this piece is a play on the title of the science fiction novel, “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?” by Philip K Dick; nothing to do with Android phones. I have massively simplified the technical specifics of this process, for brevity, clarity, and because, having failed neural nets as a subject, I’m not totally up on those specifics. I recommend this article if you are interested in more in-depth information: http://googleresearch. blogspot. co.uk/2015/06/inceptionismgoingdeeperintoneural.html

This photo of our backyard is transformed into a far stranger place by the dreams of the Google neural net. 15

AT CALOUNDRA FRINGE FESTIVAL

If you love a good laugh you’ll find your funny-fix and more at this year’s Caloundra Fringe Festival. The Loud Mouth Comedy Festival featuring master comedian Jimeoin is coming to this year’s Fringe Festival that runs from Friday September 25 to Monday October 5 -before and during the Caloundra Music Festival. Caloundra Music Festival Director Richie Eyles said Jimeoin would perform on Thursday October 1 prior to the opening of the Music Festival. “This will be a ticketed event and tickets can be purchased via the Caloundra Fringe Festival website,” he said. Jimeoin will be supported by some of the best comedians in Queensland, including Matt Okine, who was awarded the 2015 Directors Choice at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival and Best Newcomer Award at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2013. The Fringe Festival will also feature ‘Fiesta on Kings’ which has a plethora of fantastic entertainment including twilight movies, fireworks, buskers, workshops, street performers, magicians, pizza making with award winning Italian chefs & so much more. Fiesta on Kings will kick start the Caloundra Fringe Festival for 3 days from Friday September 25 to Sunday September 27. In all, there will be more than 1 00 events included in this year’s Fringee Festival, which is around double what we had last year. Division 2 Councillor Tim Dwyer saidd the Fringe Festival would again provide local artists with an important platform to showcase their creative talents alongside renownedd performers.

18

Loud

“This is the fourth year of the Fringe Festival and securing an internationally acclaimed comedian like Jimeoin as a headline act just shows how highly regarded this event has already become,” he said. The Fringe Festival is also about giving local cultural groups, musicians, film makers, comedians and culinary experts to express themselves and really unveil the wealth of cultural and artistic talent that exists here on the Sunshine Coast. Another outstanding component of this is the Caloundra Film Festival that runs in conjunction with the Fringe Festival. It showcases terrific Australian films as well as providing young and up and coming local film makers an opportunity to have their short films screened publicly and take part in film making workshops. This year the Film Festival is one of 32 in Queensland to receive a grant under the State Government’s screen culture funding program. That is terrific recognition for an event that is only in its 3rd year and provides opportunity and incentive for budding film makers to pursue their talents locally.

Caloundra

Music

The family-friendly festival by the beach announces its first round of artists; the first of a number of announcements to be made over the coming weeks. CMF presents a program of broad appeal featuring top Australian acts, exciting emerging artists and quality internationals. John Butler Trio is clearly a crowd favourite and we are excited to have them back. Tina Arena has been one of Australia’s most successful artists. In her adopted home of France she has sold more than four million records and received that

country’s highest cultural honour, a Knighthood of the Order of National Merit- a first for any Australian artist. Following on the success of last year’s “Good Times” band, this year we are presenting industry stalwarts Richard Clapton, Joe Camilleri, Russell Morris and Leo Sayer, coming together for an all-star performance to close out the festival on Monday October 6. Younger patrons will appreciate Ball Park Music and Jungle Giants. Lovers of jazz & blues will love Rick Estrin and The Nightcats and Tuba Skinny, continuing CMF’s association with New Orleans. Local emerging artists featured this year will include Ayla, Castlecomer and Alex Crook.

This is the rabbit of hearts from the Alice in Wonderland collection. This collection was a collaboration of work by my father Don Powell and myself. Don Powell carves predominantly in wood, and his work can be seen in Saint Mary’s Cathedral in Sydney’s Hyde Park, amongst many üher places. It is carved in ancient mammüh ivory (that died out in the ice age). The Rabbit from Alice in Wonderland was made into a necklace by me. It is set in 18ct white gold and rose gold and set with diamonds and rubies . The collection includes the Rabbit chasing time, Alice holding a pink öamingo & the Mad Hatter.

The first book of a trilogy, Alleluia, holds channeled codes for those who have suffered abuse, rejection and alienation. Angel's INSIGHTS

YOUniversal energies of the next quarter- Tarot, Oracle and Rune readings. by Angel Randall

April Money will be on the mind for many this month. Or to be more accurate, the lack of it. Pinching those pennies may be a wise step as over spending is easier to do than usual. This is a great time to reevaluate your budget, or if you don’t have one, create one! Unexpected bills may arrive all at once and there is even the potential for ‘Final Notice’ letters to arrive or debt collector phone calls. But do not despair! YOUniversal energies this month also strongly indicate the potential to flip things around. Often hitting rock bottom is just the motivation we need to really create some magic in our lives. Trust that you have the abilities to shift this situation from whoa to go. Listen to sudden inspirations around creating financial flow and you could see the very positive results over the next few months.

May This month will find you putting pen to paper. New beginnings are in the air and this is the perfect time to start writing that book or signing the contract on your new house. Clarify a big dream you would love to see brought into reality. Write a spell for

manifesting something exciting. Send a letter to a relative you haven’t seen for a while. Create poetry. If nothing else, write down three things you are grateful for each morning or evening. The power is in the pen this month!

June A strong feminine energy plays a key part in bringing joy to you this June. She may be a mother, a mentor, your boss, or even yourself. Work becomes easier and light if you are working in the right field for your soul’s purpose. You become surrounded by others doing what they love to inspire you and encourage you to take leaps and bounds in the direction for your highest good. If you know deep within that you are not working in the right area for utmost fulfillment, now is the time to make a courageous change of career. But talk with ‘That Woman’ first. Their antics began over 30 years ago at the old Sunshine Castle (Bli Bli) where many still remember the Black grail experience. Audiences at Festivals locally and nationally will be familiar with their hilarious repertoire, which is not always performed on stage, preferring to interact with the crowds, they roam the paths and may even accost you and have your head in a guillotine or hung like Ned Kelly. Unleash THE IMAGINATION

We have all at some time sat in school and asked the question, "What am I doing here?" Many of us staring out the window to see a day full of life and experiences that could only be touched after the 3pm school bell rang. Bobbie Richardson is the Author/Illustrator of two children's books created to open, explore and allow children's imaginations to flourish. Her first picture book, Imagine Holding Hands, was written and illustrated to open little minds into BIG places. It was created to open up the imagination. Her second book, Jonar & Kitty- The Timekeepers Void, is an 18 chapter magical adventure novel written and illustrated to introduce other dimensions, whilst learning the value and potential of the imagination, stillness of mind, and focused intention. Taking you through a maze of self awareness, it is written like a fantasy story along the lines of: Narnia, Golden Compass and Alice and Wonderland. Therefore, any child could read it as just a mystical fantasy or they could choose to delve deeper and explore their own potential. "I was made aware of a system that holds humanity back when I had an incredible experience with a Cherokee Elder who took my hand and talked to me telepathically for over an hour. Even within my very open mind, I questioned what was really taking place and asked her, via this telepathic link, a question to give me conformation. After the telepathic link was severed she approached me and verbally answered my question, I turned to her wide-eyed and smiled,

26

then she whispered in my ear, "It's magical isn't it". This is when I realized the potential of mankind was way more then what we were ever taught," says Bobbie. "I have had three children of my own now aged 9 to 25 and have experienced the diversities and different needs of each individual soul. I have seen them go through a school system that is filled with left brain logical education that does not give one iota to the awareness and creative intuitiveness of the right brain. The system creates only half an education and an imbalance in those who can easily be controlled. Their ability to create their own reality is taken away as they are taught to only repeat what a teacher or text book tells them. Conditioned to look outside themselves for all answers means they never take responsibility for themselves, thus losing their ability to heal and grow. It is a system which gives power to the large corporations and takes advantage of a now vulnerable person." Bobbie's new book 'Jonar & Kitty- The Timekeepers Void,' is written to enhance our lives and to step out of the programming of our system. It entices children and adults to think outside the box and to believe in magic again, that anything is possible. "All my life I have seen things that others couldn't, beings from other dimensions and messages from places beyond. At the beginning I found it diďŹƒcult to incorporate this gift into my life, especially in a system that wouldn't

accept such things as the norm. However, through many lessons I realised that I could fine-tune this gift, I could be in charge and use it for my gain of truth," says the author. "My journey took me through many experiences of visions and messages via dreams and obscured realities (all drug free), and lead me into the fields of quantum physics, neuroscience and the value of the pineal gland. I now believe the pineal gland holds geometrical codes, that when our monkey minds are still and balanced can flip into a cymatic patterns using our imagination, intention and or pure sounds to link us to many other dimensions co-existing alongside and within our own," she continues.

"After receiving these intuitive messages that held valuable information to any question I asked or held focus on, I was usually lead to certain scientists and or websites, quite often the very next day obtaining the same information which gave me confirmation of my intuitive messages.

Some of the people and information I was lead to include: American neuroanatomist author and public speaker Jill Bolt Taylor, neuroscientist Vilayanur S. Ramachandran, and quantum physician Dr Fred Alan Wolfe. Other information I received included: 'Anyon', a word channelled to me via my 4-year-old daughter; DMT (Dimethyltyptamine), a secretion naturally produced from the pineal gland and Cymatics." "I have personally explored my findings with incredible results, I however can only share my experiences, not to force someone to believe me but to use this information and my books to explore there own curiosities to lead them down there own rabbit hole, as this learning is experiential not via learning due to repetition as taught in schools." Bobbie is presently writing her third book, UFO Girl. www.bobbierichardson.com.au
