An Exciting Year Ahead For Maryville Sports

aryville University looks forward to another exciting year in collegiate sports, and is enjoying a number of recent athletics acoldades. The University is proud of several recent honors that recognize Maryville athletes’ commitment not only to athletic success but also their dedication to academic achievement. Some 18 Maryville athletes are among 228 athletes from throughout the Great Lakes Valley Conference who earned GLVC Council of Presidents Academic Excellence Awards this year. The award is bestowed on athletes who have exhausted his or her eligibility in their particular intercollegiate sport and maintained a minimum grade-point average of 3.5 throughout their academic careers. In addition, recipients must have competed in the GLVC for a minimum of two years and completed 96 credit hours. Maryville’s honorees represented women’s soccer, women’s track and field, women’s basketball, men’s soccer, men’s golf, volleyball, men’s cross country, softball, baseball, men’s track and field, and women’s tennis.

Additionally, 10 Maryville athletic squads are among 100 GLVC teams earning the Great Lakes Valley Conference Team Academic All-GLVC Award. The award recognizes GLVC teams that have maintained combined grade point averages of at least 3.3 for the academic year. Saints teams earning the honor include: women’s tennis, women’s basketball, women’s track and field, women’s cross country, women’s soccer, softball, volleyball,; men’s golf, men’s cross country, and women’s golf. Finally, 162 Maryville athletes (up from 130 athletes from last year) earned Great Lakes Valley Conference All-Academic honors for the 2012-13 season. The honor goes to student-athletes who have completed two semesters at their institution while maintain-

ing a grade-point average of at least 3.3 or have attained a 3.40 GPA over the two most recent semesters. Maryville ranked third in the conference for the number of honorees. This event will be held at the Jewish Community Center Marilyn Fox Building, located at 16801 Baxter Road in Chesterfield, at the intersection of Baxter and Wild Horse Creek Roads. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m., and the games will begin at 7:00 p.m. The evening will feature eight rounds of trivia, as well as other “surprise” games in between rounds. Guests are welcome to bring their own refreshments, including beverages, as well. The trivia night is being presented by the Board of

St. Luke's Tour de Wellness Bicycle Ride

t. Lukeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Hospital will introduce its inaugural Tour de Wellness cycling event Sunday, August 18, 2013. The recreational ride features 15, 40 or 60 mile routes and will begin and end at St. Lukeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Desloge Outpatient center (across Hwy. 141 from the hospital.) The 40 and 60 mile routes include a stretch down Wild Horse Creek Rd. This event will promote and celebrate healthy living in our community. St. Lukeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s has partnered with Big Shark Bicycle Co., Trailnet, Great Rivers Greenway, and the city of Chesterfield to create a safe, scenic and exiting cycling event. Riders receive a T-shirt and, food, drink and bike tech assistance at rest stops. Plus there is more food & drink, health resources, massage therapy and music by Javier Mendoza at the finish of the ride. Everything is included in the $35 registration. Forks and Corks The City of Chesterfield is pleased to announce its partnership with Entertainment St. Louis for its signature event, Forks & Corks, which will take place on Saturday, August 31 at the Chesterfield Amphitheater. This event will offer a showcase of fine food and beverages, musical entertainment, an artist Davidand Benoit village more. St. Louis Entertainment is the organizer of the Taste of St. Louis and is excited to help bring this type of event to West County. This upscale, free event begins at 3 p.m. and will feature delicious cuisine from the finest area restaurants, a wide selection of local and international wines, regional craft beers, an artist village and live music all day long. You don’t have to over- think or over –plan it; the best part of a picnic is the spontaneity. Everything you need for a safe, fun-filled afternoon at the park is right at your fingertips.

Simple Ideas For Fun Picnics are great for relaxing, but kids aren’t fans of relaxing. Cook up some activities to make the day fun for even the antsy-est member of your troop. Have a scavenger hunt. Use Common Sense When Cooking and Eating Outdoors Make sure all meat is cooked thoroughly. It’s a good idea to take a meat thermometer with you. According to www.foodsafety.gov , grilled burgers should be cooked to an internal temperature of 160 degrees; chicken breasts, 165 degrees. When cooking at the site, don’t use the same platter for both raw and cooked meat. Employ the “Two Hour Rule” to your meal: perishable food should go in the cooler within two hours after eating. If you pick up a bucket of cooked chicken or other already-cooked meals, you should eat them within one hour of purchase.

Protect Yourself Against Insects You’re outside. There will be bugs. But you can still enjoy your picnic. Try these tips. Bees: Wear light-colored clothing and avoid perfumed soaps or deodorants. Mosquitoes: They’re most active at dusk and through the night. Wear repellant and reapply after swimming or excessive sweating. Ticks: Insect repellant helps, but nothing can fully protect you from ticks. On windy days, ticks fall from trees and bushes. Check yourself and your children throughout the day. Follow basic safety directions to remove ticks. If a rash or other symptoms develop, see your doctor.

You’re Bags Are Packed, You’re Ready to Go... Don’t Forget These Steps to Keeping Your Identity Safe

our wallet is akin to a miniature directory of your identity. Think about it. Your driver´s license, credit card, debit card, medical insurance card and other numbers are all stored together. However, in the event of a lost wallet or stolen wallet, having all of this information in one place greatly increases your risk of identity theft. ProtectMyID (www.protectmyid.com) has nine great tips for travelers. 1. Keep a record. If your wallet and everything in it were suddenly missing, you´d need to know what you had lost. In a personal notebook you keep in a secure place at home, write down all of the information from the front and back of your credit, debit, driver´s license, medical insurance and other important cards. 2. Limit your cards. What you don´t carry in your wallet is just as important as what you do carry. Only carry what you need on a daily basis. If you have multiple credit cards, only carry the one you use most often. Don´t write PINs or passwords on the back of your credit or debit cards or on pieces of paper in your wallet. 3. Protect your SSN. Your Social Security number shouldn´t be on anything you regularly carry in your wallet. If any of your identification cards from a school, library or gym use your SSN as your member number, ask the organization for a randomly selected number and a new card. Be sure to shred the old one. Carry your actual Social Security card as infrequently as possible, because getting it replaced can be a hassle.

4. Make the calls. As soon as you´re certain that your wallet or important cards are miassing, call the issuers of your credit, debit, medical and driver´s license cards. Notify them of the situation and ask for a new account or identification number. Verify that your old numbers are no longer active. Even if your wallet is returned, you can´t know for certain that someone hasn´t written down your card numbers to use at a later time. 5. File a police report. If identity theft does result from a lost wallet or stolen wallet, a police report filed at the time of theft will establish credibility. Even if you are traveling, file a report with local law enforcement. Always ask for a copy of the report for your personal records. If you later need to contest fraudulent charges or activity on your accounts, you´ll already have the report on hand. 6. Contact the credit bureaus. A thief may find enough information in your wallet to open new accounts or simply use your existing cards to commit fraud. By placing fraud alerts with the three national credit bureaus, you can help prevent new accounts from being opened in your name without your express permission. 7. Watch your account statements. Checking for the signs of identity theft is essential in the months following a lost or stolen wallet. Review each account statement, including your explanation of benefits (EOB) letters from your medical insurer. Look for purchases, transactions or services you didn´t authorize or receive. If you suspect fraud, call the number on your statement immediately.

To identify new accounts fraudulently opened in your name, be sure to review your credit reports regularly especially in the months following a lost wallet or stolen wallet. A new account that you didn´t open and don´t control is a serious threat to your credit and identity. 9. Learn from the experience. If you´ve already dealt with a lost wallet or stolen wallet, be sure you´re prepared to handle the same situation if it were to happen again.
