Chesterfield to Hold Seventh Annual Fourth of July Celebration & Fireworks Display Free entertainment provided for the whole family.

lan to take part in the largest fireworks display on July 4th in the St. Louis metro area in Chesterfield. The City of Chesterfield will host its 7th annual Fourth of July Celebration and Fireworks Display on Wednesday, July 4. This free event will be held on the parking lot of Chesterfield Mall on the northwest side, between Macy's and Dillard's. The main viewing area will include the Main Stage beginning with the youth winners from the West County Talent Bash starting at 6 p.m. with Platinum Rock Legends Band starting their performance at 7:15 p.m. Children's entertainment will be from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. with bounce houses which include a giant slide, tropical toddler town, Dino bounce house and obstacle courses. There will be midway games for all ages with prizes. Fireworks begin at 9:30 p.m. Local food vendors will be on site featuring “The Best of St. Louis” foods such as pork steaks, toasted ravioli, hamburgers, cotton candy, kettle korn and other great food for the 4th of July. Bring your own lawn chairs or other seating. The display will be set up on land owned by Sachs Properties to the west of the viewing area. Ample parking is available around the mall, as motorized vehicles of any kind are not allowed in the viewing area. This event has been made possible through a collaborative effort between the City of Chesterfield, Sachs Properties and Chesterfield Mall.

Mari de Villa offers a host of programs designed to to keep assisted living residents active. These range from book reviews and art classes to guest speakers. The Memory Care Wing provides activities individually geared for each resident to help stimulate recollection. Services are provided by a qualified and dedicated staff, some who have been here for more than 25 years. Throughout the community, a closeknit family atmosphere prevails. This is because Fred and his wife Mary Kay (Mari de Villa VP) live on-site along with their oldest son Fred, a licensed administrator. They raised their three children here on the 25-acre campus and are in their 28th year on the premises. Crouching, kneeling, and stretching increases blood flow and improves cardiovascular health. Throwing increases eye-hand coordination. Playing outside in bright sunlight lessens the likelihood of depression. Physical activity can improve balance and help prevent bone loss.

Engaging in activities that stimulate the brain can reduce your risk of cognitive impairment.

Mike tossed bottle caps in the air and smacked them into the weeds with a stick. Butch disappeared into the woods, coming home at dusk with our dog trotting beside him. Billy, the baby, spent his days on the swing set or riding his tricycle, with occasional cups of Kool-Aid for energy. And me? I climbed high in the trees around our house, singing to the top of my lungs and dreaming of a future as a pop star like Vikki Carr (“It must be him…Oh dear God…It must be him…”). Our days were full of PLAY…that elusive and wonderful activity that all kids know how to do. Then, we grew up. Work, family, bills, problems, responsibilities and just plain fatigue zapped our playing time. We forgot the absolute joy in doing nothing.

And we lost the spark that keeps our imaginations soaring and our bodies and minds healthy. When was the last time you played “HO-R-S-E” basketball? Colored a picture without worrying about the outlines? Sang a song out loud just because it popped into your head? PLAY: Not just for Kids We grown-ups need to remember how relaxing and exciting it is to do something without a purpose. It goes against our adult mindsets and may seem like a waste of time, but health professionals from physicians to psychologists insist that play is vital to a healthy, happy life at any age. Play is spontaneous and frivolous. It gives our brains a chance to imagine and our bodies the freedom to frolic in undignified poses. It isn’t planned, except in the most basic steps of “put on sneakers, grab a ball” or “grab the car keys, find a park”. And it doesn’t have to be physically demanding. Play can be as simple as strumming the guitar that is waiting in the closet or snapping some photos of a beautiful sunset. Regardless of the activity, anything that speaks to your soul, ignites your imagination and makes you smile is play. It makes our bodies more flexible and adaptable, it makes our brains work better and it can improve both the quality—and quantity— of our lives.

Discovering Play All Around You Adults come in all sizes, ages and capabilities. But play is ready for you, just the way you are. If you try you can remember what you used to love doing. You may have to modify your actions a bit (I look at trees and wish, but I don’t climb, sigh), but you can rediscover the feeling. Play mini golf or go bowling with friends. Set up that dusty croquet set hiding in the basement (you know it’s there) and show your kids. You don’t need a court or even a net to play badminton in the backyard. Visit a paintball field and play “army” like you did when you were 8. Learn a new skill without the pressure of perfection: square dancing, rock climbing or swimming. Hobbies are play. Scrapbooking, writing, painting, gardening…anything that sparks your creativity and takes your brain on vacation from daily chores adds value to your life. You can attend a trivia game for a good cause or just because. Go fly a kite (one of my favorites, still.). Take a walk without a destination. Remember how that felt? Recess Time Every Week While it may be unrealistic to expect a daily play period for us who support our families and juggle responsibilities from dawn to dusk and beyond, you don’t need to spend a lot of time playing to feel the benefits. Give yourself a little time, here and there, to find that inner child inside. You can hop on your bike for a leisurely ride on a Sunday afternoon, play Simon Says or Mother May I? with the kids after supper, or belt out a tune in your car or-gasp-in the yard when the mood strikes. We can improve our quality of life to remember the fun of living and the joy of having fun. It’s easy, and it’s waiting for you right where you left it a while back. Make July and August the months you visit a few unusual places you may not have noticed or known about as you’re whizzing by on your way to somewhere else. You will be surprised and pleased at what you’ll find. ANCIENT HISTORY Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site 30 Ramey St., Collinsville, Illinois www.cahokiamounds.org or 618-346-5160 Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site in Collinsville, Illinois is just 15 minutes east

of St. Louis, but in that short distance you’ll be transported a millennium away. This site preserves the remains of the central section of the only prehistoric Indian city north of Mexico. Within its 2200 acres you’ll see evidence of the Native American history of our country. With self-guided tours, guided tours, trails and other attractions, you’ll want to stay all day. July and August hold special events at the Mounds; the Indian Art Show and Sale is July 14-15 and August 4th is Archeology Day, with crafts, digs, storytelling and other activities. One famous steamboat, The Great White Arabia, sunk near Kansas City in 1856. More than 132 years later, the Arabia was found and salvaged from the Missouri River. See the sunken ship’s cargo: from bottles and buttons to pistols and porcelain figurines, a six-ton stern section of the boat and many other artifacts that give a glimpse into the history of steamboat and Midwest history.

Jefferson Barracks served as a gathering point for troops and supplies bound for service in the Mexican War, Civil War, various Indian conflicts, Spanish-American War, Philippine War, and World Wars I and II. Today, the 425-acres park uses original stone buildings from the post as museums for permanent displays, special exhibits, as well as tours, classes and seminars. In commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the American Civil War, the site now offers the new exhibit: The Civil War in the West, with uniforms, equipment and artifacts of many key battles.

As if that weren’t enough, the museum also has a vintage soda pop collection of over 3000 bottles. Your kids will have a great time and a unique topic for their “What I Did on my Summer Vacation” essay. The first Missouri Capital, St. Charles is brimming with places to see, things to experience and activities to enjoy.

Brimming with fun and facts, the area will lead you to many other historic sites around the county you may not realize exist. For a new perspective of St. Charles, take a spooky tour at night to hear about those inhabitants who loved St. Charles too much to leave. Recommended for older children and adults, this is a great way to get reticent teens in on some summer fun. t. Louis’ summer heat requires golfers to take some precautions to enjoy the game to the fullest and remain safe at the same time. Here are several key tips to stay strong during both practice and play. Dress for Success The heat certainly requires golfers to be mindful of proper preparation and dress. Light-colored clothing is always a safe bet, but with the everchanging apparel options tech materials exist now that can make for a much more comfortable experience. These polyester spandex blended materials wick the moisture from the body which in turn keeps your shirt dry. It has been scientifically proven that an all-tech black shirt will keep the body cooler than an all-white cotton option. These tech shirts are a great buy as they hold their color, their shape and their size. In the summer heat a new cotton shirt can be ruined with one hot day. For the traditionalist, many vendors have introduced blended materials that combine both tech and cotton – this option is still better than no tech at all. Don’t forget about your feet too. Moisture wicking socks and light weight breathable shoes are your best bet. If you plan on buying shoes, take extra time to be fit properly so as to avoid blisters and sore feet. Some styles and brands fit some people differently so find the brand that works and feels best for you.

Equipment Needs If you are walking or riding in a cart during a round of golf, be sure to include more than just your golf equipment. Your golf bag should include: sunscreen (preferably a spray that can be applied easily during play), band-aids, a pain medication like aspirin or ibuprofen, and an insect repellant. Note: As bug spray can be extremely harmful to course turf, be sure to apply sprays prior to the round or if you reapply during play, be sure to apply away from the grass and only on cart paths.

Hydration Stations Persimmon Woods has numerous water stations (and cold towels stations) located at various points on the course during high heat and humid conditions. If you are on a course with limited access to water, be sure to have water bottles or energy drinks available to you at all times. Hydration is critically important to avoid cramping or more serious conditions like heat stroke. Every year we see golfers fall victim to the heat due to the lack of preparation before their round when selecting the proper clothing and maintaining proper hydration throughout the round. Absolutely avoid any consumption of alcohol during a hot, humid round of golf as this will only speed up the dehydration process. Have fun and stay safe! Tasty Tidbits from Eateries in and Around Chesterfield

PM BBQ Smoked Chicken, Pesto, Bacon Panini

his is one of Amy Ruck’s recipes that the Ruck & Lamers families (owners of PM BBQ) use for any leftover chicken that they have. It would also be great with a pound of freshly pulled chicken from PM BBQ. This recipe can be made with smoked turkey as well. The panini can be made ahead of time and served at room temperature for a picnic or at the lake. If a panini is not available, this can be made by grilling the sandwich in an oiled skillet, with another skillet or a brick wrapped in foil on top to weigh the bread down and fuse the flavors together. They have won numerous awards for best BBQ in town. Try it out soon for some delicious real hickory smoked BBQ. They offer dine in, carry out and catering services. RECIPE: • 1 pound pulled smoked chicken • 8 ounces sliced provolone, havarti or similar cheese • 12 slices cooked bacon • 4 TBS pesto • 4 ciabatta rolls or 8 slices of good sourdough or multigrain bread. Slice and open rolls, or lay out bread. Top one side with 1 ounce

cheese, 4 ounces chicken and 3 slices bacon. On top of sandwich, place 1 ounce cheese then spread with pesto. Close sandwiches. • Spray each side with a little cooking spray. Place 2 sandwiches at a time on hot panini press and grill until brown & heated through. • Would also be great with roasted red peppers or sundried tomoatoes!

If You Are Hot, Your Wine Is Too A letter to Gary Bilder of Lukas Liquors... Dear Gary, Summer is upon us. Most of us will be sitting on our decks, entertaining and drinking. DON'T FORGET - the proper serving temperature for red wine is 65° and white wine should be 55°... "Really, Gary?! It's 95° outside and you want us to think about keeping our WINE at the proper temperature?" A lot of my friends put ice cubes in their white wine. The ice melts and ruins the wine, but if ice cubes aren't used, the wine gets too warm. When it comes to reds - too many of us give up, or drink them altogether too warm. Here are some hints from Gary for serving wine on a hot day. The temperature won't be perfect, but the wine will taste good.

• Put your red wine in the fridge 30 minutes before you plan on opening it. Fill up a shallow-bottom tub with ice and put a thin kitchen towel over the ice. Lay your red wine on top of the towel to keep it from getting warm before serving. • Buy red or green grapes. Place grapes in a Tupperware container and freeze. Put one or two grapes in your serving glass for reds and three or four grapes in your white wine glass. When your guests finish their glass, they eat the grapes! It's fun and it protects your wine. Have a great Summer and enjoy your libation experiences!

Serving Beer From a Keg...

Cool Summer Drink Recipe: Sangria Best served by Charles on the Bistro 1130 Patio. However, just is case you want to indulge at home the folks at Bistro 1130 shared their recipe with us. Now this is for a couple gallons worth of Sangria, so invite your friends! • • • • • • • • • •

1 1/2 cup Camus VSOP brandy 1 cup orange juice 1/2 cup pinneapple juice 1 bottle Syrah 1 bottle Pinot Noir 1 cup Cointreau 6 limes & 6 oranges sliced in rounds 6 lemons sliced in rounds Best to let all sit over night. When dispensing each drink over ice, top the cocktail with your favorite ginger ale. This will give it that fresh effervescence you want.

In St. Louis there are approximately 250 beers available in kegs. Kegs come in three sizes: a half (1/2) barrel contains about seven cases. A quarter (1/4) barrel has three and a half cases. A sixth (1/6) barrel has about two and a half cases. A handful of beers come in a quarter barrel, including Bud Light. When serving beer from a keg make sure you serve it in a 12 oz cup. Beer in a 16 oz cup gets too warm. The keg needs to be iced down at all times. This requires three 20 lb bags of ice for 1/2 barrel. If your keg is not properly chilled you could lose 10% of your beer to foam. A tapper system is used to pump the beer through a hose to a dispensing valve. If the hose is not covered with ice it will get warm. Cold beer going through a warm hose will also result in foam. You’ll save 10% of your beer if you keep the hose cold.
