ach year the last Saturday in January, artisans who specialize in ice carving congregate to St. Charles’ Historic Main Street to complete and demonstrate their talents to the public. Ice carvers use chisels, chainsaws, and blow torches to sculpt blocks of ice into beautiful, elegant pieces of art, which depending on the weather, could become puddles within a day or two! The festival is fun for the entire family. Put on some warm clothing, your caps and mittens and head on out to Main Street on January 28 from 10 am until 3 pm. Hot drinks are available and fire pits to warm up! For more information contact the Greater St. Charles Convention & Visitors Bureau at 636-9467776 or historicstcharles.com

et moving on your New Year’s resolution to get more exercise at the Renaud Spirit Center (RSC)! With all that holiday cooking under our belts, January is a great time to “lean up” through regular exercise. Exercise has other benefits, too – study after study shows that one of the best ways to boost your health and improve your mood is by boosting your heart rate through exercise. But it’s tough to keep motivated when chilly, rainy weather sets in, and short winter days mean that it’s dark when we get home from work. And who’s going to watch the kids while we go jogging? To jump-start a healthy exercise program that will keep your motivation running on high all year long, join the RSC. O’Fallon’s indoor recreation complex offers memberships for individuals and growing families alike, with professional-level exercise equipment, certified trainers, an indoor track, a swimming complex, open play in the gymnasium, child care, a food court, and a host of exercise and leisure programs for all ages and abilities. It’s not just the state of the art, 66,000-square-foot facility that’s so attractive; it’s the variety of exercise programs taught by professional staff and trainers. Sign up for group spinning, learn to lift weights safely or train for marathons, improve flexibility with Body Fusion or Vinyasa Yoga, get your kicks in Cardio Combo, ease joint pain with lowimpact water aerobics, and get

or a child with learning disabilities, school can be a daunting place. The challenges of meeting standardized academic goals while trying to maneuver through the emotional and physical environment of school, can create havoc with a student’s educational progress. Many students have different styles of learning and struggle with attention and distractibility issues. In a traditional school setting, these issues may cause loneliness, low self esteem and a defeated attitude. Because 4 out of 10 students in our country struggle with some form of learning disability, many children would benefit from an alternative to a traditional school environment. The Academy of St. Louis in Chesterfield serves students grades kindergarten through twelfth grade. The Academy is a faith-based school that provides an environment that welcomes the individuality of each student, and offers a curriculum that challenges them personally while providing accommodations designed for each student’s personal success. By cultivating self-confidence and socialization along with tailored academic goals, the Academy provides their students with the tools and opportunities to reach their personal best in life.

Academics Alone Do Not Measure Success Many students diagnosed with a learning disability or developmental delay are also challenged in the area of social development. Many social situations that may be second nature to most, often times cause anxiety and frustration for these children. The Academy of St. Louis provides a structured, social skills curriculum giving students the opportunity to role play and experience in “real life” settings, the appropriate response to different social interaction. The Academy also provides leadership opportunities for these same students to exemplify their talents and ability to lead.

Director, “We believe our specialized curriculum, together with our high school transitioning program, prepares our students for postsecondary education, trade school, employment or volunteer placement.” Academy high school students work with transitioning coaches, career networking professionals, educational specialists and other business professionals to set and meet goals for post-high school opportunities. The Academy understands a parent’s worst fear is the future of their special needs child. What will happen after graduation? Will my child ever live independently or have a future outside of our home? The Academy of St. Louis provides the resources and knowledge to plan for a successful transition for each student. Graduates who fulfill the requirements set by the state of Missouri receive a high school diploma. Other students receive a certificate of completion.

Tailored Learning For Top Results The curriculum at the Academy integrates educational goals as well as functional and social skills to build competency for students in their future lives. A maximum of five students per classroom assures individual attention and learning goals that are introduced in a physically and emotionally safe environment for each Academy student. Classrooms are spacious and bright, encouraging learning. Along with the core subjects- math, language arts, religion, science and social studies- students are taught social skills, and neuro/diversity to help them gain an understanding and appreciation of their individual strengths and challenges. Students also enjoy many other enriching classes: art, golf, drama, computer skills, nutrition and physical education. Bi-monthly service and educational field trips throughout the St. Louis area give hands-on experiences to enrich each child’s view of life outside the classroom. To help foster social values, the students of the Academy serve the community by participating in various service projects throughout the school year.

Success Beyond School: Learning Through Love and Dedication The staff and faculty at the Academy of St. Louis are dedicated, professionals, working together to create an “alternative learning environment” based on each student’s individual needs. Their personal and professional dedication makes the Academy of St. Louis the right choice for parents looking for an alternative to traditional school. Terri O’Daniel, Academy Advancement Director, says, “Every child is born with significant potential in life to succeed. This is what we believe...fulfilling this mission is our commitment to our students and their families.” The Academy of St. Louis is currently accepting applications for the January 2012 semester. know you’ve heard it before: exercise is good for you. But current research indicates that you need regular exercise, just like you need a balanced diet, to maintain optimal health. Research indicates that once you begin an exercise plan, it’s important to stick with it on a consistent basis. Two researchers at the University of MissouriColumbia recently published a study in the Journal of the Physiological Society. Their research involved rats, but their findings give us some important clues about our own bodies. In fact, many physiological functions in rats are very similar to those of humans, so it is instructive. The MU scientists put their subjects on a regular exercise regimen for three weeks. Then they allowed the rats to be sedentary for a couple of days. They found that even in such a short time period, the rats were not able to use insulin as efficiently as they had while they were exercising on a regular basis. Why is this important? Because the body’s inability to efficiently use insulin is related to increased risk of diabetes, heart disease, obesity and high blood pressure. Insulin allows glucose, or blood sugar, to be converted into energy by our muscles. Regularly exercised muscles use insulin to facilitate a transfer of glucose from the blood to the muscle tissue in a very efficient manner. It appears that when a muscle

has not been exercised, it uses less insulin, and glucose consumption slows as a result. This means that the glucose stays in the bloodstream longer, which is not optimal for good health. It’s not possible to draw definite conclusions about human health based on a single study, but it is safe to say that this study adds to the growing body of research pointing to the benefits of regular exercise. Itimproves mood, alleviates fatigue, burns calories and cuts the risk of cardiovascular disease. A simple walking program can offer all these benefits, and can be done wherever your schedule takes you and where you’re most comfortable. If you don’t want to walk outside this time of year, walk around the mall for 30 minutes. Nike knows what they’re talking about when they say, “Just Do It.” Make a point to do something for yourself with regular exercise and you’ll find you’re more productive, more filled with holiday cheer, and best of all, more healthy.
