O

ne of my favorite holiday memories is waking up early on Easter morning to the spring sunlight streaming through my bedroom window. The air felt new and crisp throughout the house; the smell of eggs and sugar told me it was a special, pastel day full of surprises. My nightgown fluttered as I ran to the kitchen where five Easter baskets waited in a jumble for my brothers and me. The boys had to be told whose was whose. Mine was the one covered with pink cellophane and full of hair barrettes, white-chocolate bunnies -my favorite-and hidden treasures inside that wonderful green plastic grass. Easter baskets are part of the magic of every child’s memory, and we become adults who smile as our own children and grandchildren make their own memories each year. Leave a note for the Easter Bunny this year with some ideas for personal, unique and surprising Easter baskets for those you love.

Page 20

EASTER

BThey’ll ASKETS Remember

Healthy Schmelthy: It’s Easter I know. Kids are getting heavier every year (aren’t we all?). But that doesn’t mean we should line Easter baskets with broccoli and baby spinach. Buy a hollow bunny, of course. Don’t turn the basket into a grocery cart full of boxed four-packs and huge treats. Opt for smaller, colorful candies and fun-sized chocolate bars strewn throughout the basket. Half the fun is digging for those surprises.

By Robin Garrison Leach

You can get by with a bag of peanuts or a random granola bar hidden among the treats. But don’t overdo it.

Make it Personal Nobody knows your children better than you and the Easter Bunny. The candy and treats inside the basket don’t all have to be Easter-themed. If your kids love popcorn, add a pack or two. Get those sour gummies that make your jaws cringe and throw in Pop Rocks (knowing they’ll make you look inside their mouths and listen to the popping all day). Forego the junky toys that break upon touching. Give your little fashionista tiny nail polishes and dollarstore bling. Boys are easy; give them anything that makes noise (whoopee cushions are a fave).

A Basket of Memories The basket you choose for Easter can be as special as what you find inside. And using the same one each year can become a tradition you’ll both cherish. The kids may not think it’s a big deal now, but the significance will grow along with them.

Find a basket (or any type of container) in your child’s favorite color. A large plastic truck or a simple jewelry box can hold plenty of Easter fun. Try your hand at making a special basket or box; it doesn’t have to be fancy; love makes homemade crafts priceless. Use the same container each year and watch it fill with meaning every spring.

Those Store Baskets: Still Fun My mother went to great lengths to give us Easter baskets she filled herself. They were always great, and we loved her for it. But there was always a part of the little me that sighed at the idea of running into the kitchen and seeing one of those pre-made baskets from our local Dime Store. They looked so full…so shiny…so magical. I didn’t know the basket was mostly grass and overpriced. I only saw the delight of the outside. Even now, I cruise the Easter aisle and peer at each wrapped basket with curiosity, wondering what’s inside. If you opt to buy your basket already made, don’t worry about disappointing your child. I promise. We -I mean, they- love those, too! FRONT COVER FEATURE - INNSBROOK

! Planning a Wedding as Unique as your Love

O

ur wedding planners at Innsbrook Resort are always getting requests from brides to help make their weddings unique. At Innsbrook, we have worked with brides to create weddings from start to finish in a style unique to them, whether it be simple, romantic, elegant, western or classic. If you’re a bride-to-be, don’t be afraid to plan something intrinsically you. Here are a few ideas: Show Your Love by the Lake There’s something inherently romantic about being lakeside. Saying “I Do” as the sun melts into the lake? Handsdown perfect. At Innsbrook, our lakeside terrace on the shore of 150-acre Lake Aspen is, by far, the favorite “I Do” spot for couples. The breathtaking 180degree panorama is a brilliant backdrop. Goin’ to the Chapel Exchanging vows in a quaint, countryside chapel has a classic flare. Our brides fall head over heels for the intimate setting of Innsbrook’s Harmonie Church. This charming, white chapel affords a peaceful, wooded setting -- like something out of a Norman Rockwell painting. Put the Top Down Outdoor weddings are a popular choice for brides and grooms looking for a naturally elegant motif. At Innsbrook, we have arranged open-air weddings in all types of settings, like under the shade

of the Big Mulberry Tree at the old farmhouse. Or maybe you’ll like the lawn of the Old School House. Mother Nature never fails to set the perfect stage. (But is your mother saying, “What if it rains?” No worries. At Innsbrook, we always have a back-up plan in case of raindrops. We have lots of flexible space under roof.) Put a Horse to Work If you have a hankerin’ for horses, there are some unique ways to work them into your wedding. At Innsbrook, our full-service equine center makes it a breeze to put a horse to work in weddings. We have had brides escorted to the ceremony by horse-drawn carriage, grooms arriving to the service on horseback, and couples riding off into the sunset by covered carriage.

Unique Photo Ops a Plenty We hear married couples complain all the time about how they rushed around between the ceremony and reception to take photos. With 8,000 acres and 100 lakes, Innsbrook gives couples the chance to relax in between because we have photo ops around every turn. Some couples take to the greens for some sporty golf shots, others have found the perfect lakefront spot, and some have even stopped by our nature trails to get pictures with the wildflowers. The possibilities are endless! Tailor Your Menu as Much as Your Dress Many brides put artists to work for their dresses, the floral arrangements and the cakes. Shouldn’t the details of your meal be as well thought-out? At Innsbrook, our own executive chef sits down with our brides to craft menus that are custom-fit. Whether it’s a plated dinner, buffet, cocktail hour with hors d’oeuvres or a bridal luncheon, our meals will make your guests’ mouths water. End it with a Bang Some couples love to end their day with a bang. At Innsbrook, we’re wellversed in big bangs. We’ve had a love for pyrotechnics for the last 30 years. (Our July 4th fireworks show is the largest private show in the state!) It’s always great to see the faces of the bride, groom and their guests as the night sky over Lake Aspen lights up in a booming celebration. We invite you to discover more about how our wedding planners at Innsbrook can make your day as unique as your love. Visit www.innsbrook-resort.com, call (636)928-3366 ext. 884 or email weddings@innsbrook-resort.com.

GOLF TALK

Recovering From and Avoiding Bad Lies Advice from Innsbrook Resort Golf Course on how to clean up your golf game before the warm weather hits. Sometimes You Just Have to Take a Stroke

L

ocated just 30 minutes west of St. Charles, Innsbrook Resort Golf Course is carved out of the rolling, wooded hills of Warren County. This championship course is long and tight enough from the back tees to provide a stern test for low handicappers, while being fair to the high handicapper from the shorter tees. This 18-hole public course first opened for play in 1989. The course was designed by network golf commentator Jay Randolph Sr. and Innsbrook’s Director of Golf Mark Waltman. With rolling fairways that bend, twist, bank and climb uphill and down, the course at Innsbrook Resort may find you in some interesting predicaments. Here are some tips for those tricky lies:

A Better Bunker Shot Let the Club Do All the Work With Innsbrook’s 30 sand bunkers, you’re sure to find yourself in one of them during the course of your game. The key to coming out of a bunker successfully is to have your swing follow along your body line. Hit two inches behind the ball, and accelerate the club head through the sand. The bounce of the sand wedge will dictate how much sand you will catch between the club face and the ball. Remember not to “scoop” the ball.

What makes you end up in the rough? Certainly an imperfect swing. Don’t compound your difficulties by trying to pull off an againstall-odds rescue shot. As much as you hate to do it, it’s usually best to get the ball back in play, lose a stroke if you must, and move on. A lot of golfers make the mistake of following up a bad shot with another bad one. The key: Minimize your mistakes.

Water at Your Right? Water at Your Left? Stay Straight! Do you dread the holes on the course where you have water on the left or the right of the fairway? It’s important to train your brain not to focus on the water, but rather on your target. It’s a mistake to try to line up to the left if the water is on the right. Most likely, you’ll end up hitting across the ball - yup, massive slice into the depths! Concentrate on lining up your hips and shoulders on the target line, and resist the urge to aim away from the water hazard. By the way, Innsbrook has plenty of water hazards - 12 to be exact. 26

With beautiful spring weather right around the corner, the par-70, 6,527-yard course at Innsbrook Resort is just the spot to try out some of these tips. The course is complemented by a practice putting green, driving range, practice sand bunker, pro shop, and restaurant and bar where you can brag about how you escaped the bunkers, navigated the water hazards, and played smart to shave strokes off your score! To find out more about Innsbrook’s course or to book tee times, visit www.innsbrook-resort.com, email golf@innsbrook-resort.com or call (636)928-3366 ext. 203. Be sure to inquire about their discount email program and 2012 Free Greens Club membership program.
