Bad Christmas Tree Three-year-old Maria’s new secret puppy pooped under the Christmas tree before her father could put it in hiding. When Maria came home from her Grandma’s on Christmas Eve, she went to look at the Christmas tree. Seeing the poop on the floor, Maria quickly ran into the kitchen to her mother. “Mom, I think you need to give the Christmas tree a time out.” “Why?” her mom asked curiously. “It pooped on the floor.” Christmas Massacre Four-year-old Keiran ran into his mother’s room in a panic. “Mom, you need to get Duke out of here.” Confused, his mom looked at him curiously. “Why?” “Duke ate Ellie the Elf, and Santa’s probably going to call the cops,” Kieran said frantically. At just that moment, an overweight bulldog came sauntering into the room merrily with a Santa ornament hanging out of his mouth. Keiran put his hand on his forehead and sighed. “Well, there’s no hope for him now.” Try Before You Buy Myra was going to the Christmas office party but needed a new party dress. In the clothing store she asked, ‘May I try on that dress in the window, please?’ ‘Certainly not, madam,’ responded the salesgirl, ‘you’ll have to use the fitting room like everyone else.’

THE GIFT OF PRIORITIZING YOUR OWN WELL-BEING Author: Stephanie den Hollander Phenomenally You Life Coaching www.phenomenallyyou.ca As the hustle and bustle of the holiday season is upon us, it is important to consider your own well-being and worth as you give to others. It can be quite common for people to focus so much on the materialism of giving to others, that the stress of trying to get it all bought, made, wrapped, and delivered can be overwhelming and dim the joy and meaning of the season. You can’t pour from an empty cup, so here are a few tips to support your ability to maintain your health and wellness so that you can enjoy more fun and quality time with those you care about as you spread holiday cheer! CALM Make time in your schedule to relax and slow down. CLEAR Create boundaries for yourself and others when planning gatherings and events. Remember, Brené Brown said it best, “Clear is kind. Unclear is unkind.” This helps to reduce misunderstandings and frustration for everyone. SIMPLE Often the most meaningful moments are simple and spontaneous when it comes to family traditions. Ask your family members what they love most about the holidays and their favourite memories. You may be surprised by their answers and can use their insights to focus more energy and effort where it really counts, and let go of some things that just don’t really matter. Prioritize what brings you all the most joy! GRATITUDE We all have the ability and opportunity to cultivate gratitude. Rather than complain about the things you think you deserve, take a few moments to focus on all that you have. Developing an “attitude of gratitude” is one of the simplest ways to improve your satisfaction with life. It’s also FREE and something you have complete control over doing, so choose wisely in this gift to empower yourself. Just a few of the many scientifically proven benefits of practicing gratitude: ~ Opens the door to more relationships ~ Improves physical and psychological health ~ Better sleep ~ Improves self-esteem ~ Enhances empathy and reduces aggression ~ Increases mental strength and resilience The best gift you can give to your family, friends, colleagues, and community is a healthy and happy YOU!

Sudoku is a logic-based, combinatorial number-placement puzzle. In this CHRISTMAS sudoku, the objective is to fill a 9×9 grid with the letters so that each column, each row, and each of the nine 3×3 subgrids that compose the grid contain all of the letters from the word CHRISTMAS. The puzzle setter provides a partially completed grid, which for a well-posed puzzle has a single solution.

Cookies in a Jar Create a thoughtful and inexpensive gift with these DIY Christmas Cookies in a Jar. Equipped with recipes and printable stickers and tags, you can give the homemade gift of the season! Ingredients 1 and 3/4 cups All-Purpose Flour (spoon & leveled) 1 ¼ teaspoons Baking Soda 1 teaspoon Salt 1 ½ cups Dark Brown Sugar (or packed light) ½ cup Granulated Sugar 1 cup Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips ½ cup M&Ms (plain mini or regular size) 20 tablespoons *gift recipient will add: 10 Tablespoons (145g) softened unsalted butter, 1 large egg, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Instructions To make the jars: Combine the first 3 ingredients (flour, baking soda, salt). Now it’s time to layer the ingredients in 32 ounce mason jars. I suggest layering the dry ingredients into the jars in a thoughtful way so each layer stands out. Dark (cocoa powder), light (granulated sugar), dark (brown sugar), light (flour + baking soda + salt), dark (chocolate chips), then the peppermint bark or M&Ms. Use a spoon to layer or, if you’re particular like I am, use a funnel so the layers are extra neat. Seal the

lids, decorate with ribbon, and gift with the free printable tags. To bake the cookies: In a large bowl using a hand-held mixer or stand mixer fitted with a paddle attachment, beat the butter, egg, and vanilla extract together on high speed until combined. Don’t worry if the egg isn’t fully combining with the butter; it’ll all come together with the dry ingredients. Add all of the jar ingredients and mix on low speed until combined. Cookie dough does NOT require chilling. Drop by rounded Tablespoonfuls onto parchment paper or silicone baking mat lined baking sheets, about 3 inches apart. Bake in a 350°F (177°C) oven for about 10 minutes until the edges are set. Each recipe yields about 2 dozen cookies. Cookies stay fresh in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 week or in the freezer for up to 3 months. Cookie dough balls freeze well for up to 3 months. Little Funk Library Happy Holidays Everyone! Many people struggle to find that “perfect” gift for their loved ones and there is always that one person who is harder to buy for. Well, I am here to help you with the bookworm on your list with ideas that are not books. A mini reading light for those nocturnal readers, headphones for the audio book lover, nice book ends for the book collector, bookmarks for the reader, a book binder/case for the on-the-go reader (small laptop bags work as well), a book table for the in-thetub reader, cozy blanket and tea selection for the cuddle and relaxed reader. Providing literature as a gift for the holidays is an excellent idea for all ages. It’s the season to slow down, come in and relax in comfort and warmth, wishful hibernation. Finances can be tight for many so I like to encourage people to reuse items. Therefore, our Little Library would be happy to help; we have LOTS of young adult and adult novels in stock. If you would like to get some gently used books to add to your gifts, please contact me or come down and visit the library as I restock often. Thank you for visiting! Happy Holidays and New Year!
