Ste. Anne Goaltender Backstops Canada to Gold at U18 World Championships
Ste. Anne’s Raygan Kirk is living up to the community legacy of top calibre players competing on the world stage. The 17-year-old star goaltender led the Canadian women’s U18 team to the top spot on the IIHF tournament podium, following a thrilling 3-2 overtime win over their rivals from the United States. The Ste. Anne’s product says she’s not entirely used to having the gold dangling from her neck. She told the media “It’s definitely a little heavy, that’s for sure, but it’s great. It’s one of the biggest accomplishments of my life.” Canada captured its first gold medal at the IIHF tournament since 2014. “Canada’s back on top. We did it,” Kirk said. “It’s something I’ll never forget.” Kirk was named most valuable player of the tournament as she stopped 25 of 27 shots thrown her way in the final game. She played the final four
games with a 2.08 goals-against average and .878 save percentage. Kirk was more than happy to share the success, giving credit to her teammates for their great play. Kirk will probably be between the
pipes for the U18 team representing Manitoba at the Canada Winter Games and have company from Ste. Anne as forward Kate Gregoire will also hit the ice.
When asked about the possibility of competing on the biggest stage in women’s hockey — for an Olympic gold medal — Kirk said making the team is “the goal.”
Jocelyn Larocque Named to Play Rivalry Series Twenty-three of the nation’s top players have been named to Canada’s National Women’s Team when it faces the United States in the three-game, cross-border Rivalry Series next month in Southern Ontario and Michigan. Canada’s roster was selected by head coach Perry Pearn, alongside Gina Kingsbury, director of women’s national teams, with support from head scout Melody Davidson, as well as the coaching staff and regional scouts. “It’s exciting to have the opportunity to showcase our sport and its elite athletes from both sides of the border, and we hope to inspire young girls to play the game,” said Kingsbury. “This series will also be an important evaluation process and measuring stick for us as we look ahead to the IIHF Women’s World Championship in Finland in April.” The series kicks off Tuesday, Feb. 12 at 7 p.m. ET at the Budweiser
Gardens in London, Ont., followed by a game Thursday, Feb. 14 at 7 p.m. ET at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto before shifting to the U.S. for the series finale on Sunday, Feb. 17 at 12 p.m. ET at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, Mich. Canada’s National Women’s Team roster for the Rivalry Series includes: 17 players who won a silver medal with Canada’s National Women’s Team at the 2018 4 Nations Cup in Saskatoon, Sask. (Bach, Fast, Fortino, Gosling, Jenner, Johnston, Krzyzaniak, Larocque, Maschmeyer, Nurse, Poulin, Rattray, Saulnier, Spooner, Stacey, Szabados, Turnbull); 14 players who won a silver medal with Canada’s National Women’s Team at the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in PyeongChang, South Korea (Fast, Fortino, Jenner, Johnston, Lacasse, Larocque, Lacquette, Nurse, Poulin, Saulnier, Spooner, Stacey, Szabados, Turnbull). Ste. Anne Community Sells Out Two Local Fundraisers
A Bud Spud Fundraiser was hosted at the Ste. Anne Hotel to support a local family. They where offering 5 seatings over the Friday/Saturday event with each seating accommodating approximately 75 attendees. The community pulled through and sold out this event. What an amazing accomplishment. To maximize efforts they also held a large silent auction and a 50/50 draw. This February there are 2 planned paint nights for the family, also taking place at the Ste. Anne Hotel. The Ste. Anne Lions Club will host
their annual Coffee house in February this year featuring Laurie Sutherland as Patsy Cline. The evening consists of coffee, tea and desserts, a silent auction, a 50/50 draw and entertainment. Unfortunately for those without tickets, this fundraiser is sold out!

One of my favourite recipesis one my friend passed on to me. I like to make it when I have limited time before guests arrive. It’s so easy and quick to bake and makes the kitchen smell so nice. It pairs well with a hot cup of tea or coffee.
Quick Coffee
Cake
1/4 cup butter 1 cup sugar 1 egg beaten 1/4 tst salt 1/2 cup milk 1 1/2 cups flour 2 tsp b.powder
Cream the butter. Beat in sugar and egg. Add portions of milk alternatively, with portions of flour, baking powder and salt. Pat into a buttered pan 6x10 or 9x9. Topping - Mix 1/2cup brown sugar ,2 tbsp flour, 2 tsp cinnamon, 8 tbsp melted butter, 1/2 cup chopped walnuts. Pour and spread over cake batter and bake at 375° degrees for 20 minutes. Or until toothpick comes out dry. You can use chopped pecans for a richer taste
National Flag of Canada Day was officially proclaimed on February 15, 1996. February 13 was chosen as World Radio Day because it was the day United Nations radio was established in 1946. February frequently occurs in lists of the most commonly misspelt words in the English language. The Americans have trouble with the word February too – last year, a press release from the White House consistently spelt it as “Feburary.”
