Local Youth Curls for Ste. Anne

Local Youth Cody Funk was one of the 24 finalists in Curl Manitoba’s province wide Hit-Draw-Tap Competition assembled in Winkler late February to determine provincial winners in three age categories. All seven Manitoba Sport regions were represented in each competition along with an eighth youngster from the host Winkler Curling Club. Now in its second year, the competition began with nearly 600 young curlers competing at the club level for the privilege of moving on to regional competitions. The 24 finalists played three different shots – a draw, a tapback on a rock in the front of the 12 foot circle and a takeout on a stone on the back of the button. Scoring was based on final position of the delivered stone with a one for being in play in the free guard zone up to five for a rock biting the button. The two older age groups, the 9-10 year olds and the 11-13 year olds, played full sheet shots while the youngest group, the 6-8 year olds, played

short sheet shots from the hack to the nearest rings. This is Cody’s second year at the provincials representing Ste. Anne in the 6-8 age group as the Hit-Draw-Tap Regional Champion of the Eastman Region. In 2017 Cody attended the Provincial championships in Portage la Prairie tying for first then in a shootout placed second scoring 14/15 in the first round and 13/15 in the shootout. This year Cody won his seat as Regional champion with a score of 14/15 and at the provincial championships he scored 11/15 and placed 3rd overall in Manitoba. The Hit-Draw-Tap program began a year ago in Manitoba, a good idea borrowed from the Ontario Curling Association. Just over 450 participants in 2017 grew to 600 in 2018. As the program continues to expand, it is expected to become a major aspect of CurlManitoba’s youth development program. Every curling facility in the province is invited to host a club competition and a key point is that participants do not have to be members of the club’s junior program. All Manitoba children are welcome to participate. Cody told his parents that the ice this year was tricky as it was a little slick. Overall he had a great time.

Successful Community Calendar Fundraiser The Sainte-Anne Community Calendar Fundraiser held by Soccer Sainte-Anne and the Ste. Anne Lions Club was a huge success. “Through the support of local businesses and donations raised from calendars in stores we were able to raise around $2,700 to support our programming and the Ste. Anne Lion Clubs many activities,” said Soccer Sainte-Anne President Dave Nelson. “We would like to thank all of our advertisers and all of the community that supported us.” The fundraiser has closed for this year but Nelson says “For sure we will do it again next year! In fact, planning has already started. For anyone who wants to advertise or put their event, birthday or memorial in the calendar or if you would like to submit your Sainte-Anne photos, email calendar@soccersainteanne.com.” Photos are also being accepted throughout the year for the 2019 calendar.

The Ste. Anne Lions Club hosted their 4th annual Evening of Coffee & Entertainment recently. This year’s show was once again sold out. On top of coffee and treats, there was a silent auction and a 50/50 draw where one
