Ste. Anne Student Wins Player of the Year

Congratulations go to the winner of the AA Basketball Male Player of the Year Raymond Hiebert from Ste. Anne. Raymond plays for the Ste. Anne Collegiate Lynx Basketball Team and was awarded the Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the Week back in December 2013. This 6’4” forward led the team to a perfect 7-0 record during the pre-season. He also led the Lynx to a tournament win in Niverville. Raymond averages 35 pts and 25 rebounds per game. “Ray is the hardest working player I have ever coached or seen at this level,” says Coach Erik Leefe. “He is always in the gym working on his game and helping his teammates with theirs. He never stops working during a game no matter what the score or stakes.” Hiebert is a grade 12 student who maintains an 85% average, while also participating in Volleyball, Badminton and Track. Modern moms have an average family size of two children, while mothers in the 1950s had an average of 3.5 kids? In the 1700s, women gave birth to seven to ten children each.

Drug Production Cause House Explosion Submitted by Janet McPherson

Submitted by Melissa Berard

Submitted by Katrina Snell Submitted by Katrina Snell There was an explosion in the garage of a Gagnier Bay house around 3:30 pm April 6th in Ste. Anne that sent three men to hospital with one man in serious condition with burns. All three men were in the garage manufacturing illegal drugs when the explosion and subsequent fire occurred in the garage of the home. "The damage was pretty extensive. One garage wall was blown out four feet and the garage doors were blown off," said Chief Ken Dayment of the Sainte-Anne Fire Department. "It went from there right into the attic and we managed to stop it in the attic." The man who is in serious condition was taken to the Health Science Centre in Winnipeg due to the serious nature of his burns while the other two men were taken to hospital in Ste. Anne. Ste. Anne Police Chief Marc Robichaud says it appears the manufacture of illegal drugs led to the explosion. He said a search warrant was carried out on the 7th. "We discovered items that would be conducive to the production of cannabis oil. We recovered a number of containers, used butane containers, which are common in the production of cannabis oil along with a quantity of marijuana and some materials that are used in making cannabis oil or hashish oil." The damage to the home was estimated at about $150,000-200,000. Charges are pending.

PTH 12 Getting $28 Million Facelift The Manitoba government is investing over $28 million in repairs and upgrades along PTH 12 south of the Trans-Canada Highway. Work starting this year will include rehabilitating the Seine River Diversion bridge, just south of Ste. Anne, improving the intersection at PR 311 near Blumenort and paving seven km from south of PTH 52 to Park Road in Steinbach. The north and southbound lanes of the six-kilometre stretch from the TransCanada Highway to the Seine River Diversion will also be paved. Borland Construction has been awarded the contract for that project and paving will occur over the next two years. “The new projects include bridge replacements and paving and resurfacing of this roadway, which is a direct link to the Trans-Canada Highway, the national highway system, and CentrePort Canada,” said Manitoba Premier Greg Selinger.

A Little Laugh... Husband Down Eddie and his wife June are shopping in their local supermarket. The husband picks up a case of Heineken and puts it in their cart. “What do you think you're doing?” asks June. “They're on sale, only $15 for 24 cans,” Eddie replies. “Put them back, we can't afford them” demands the wife, and so they carry on shopping. A few aisles further on along June picks up a $30 jar of face cream and puts it in the basket. “What do you think you're doing?” asks Eddie. “It's my face cream. It makes me look beautiful,” replies the wife. Her husband retorts: “So does 24 cans of Heineken and it's half the price.”
