Province Invests in Urban and Hometown Green Team Grants Bob Lagassé, MLA for Dawson Trail, is pleased to highlight a recent provincial announcement of over $10 million in Green Team grant programs to help young Manitobans find summer employment and gain work experience while supporting COVID-19 response and recovery efforts. “Our PC government recognizes the value of supporting community-based organizations and providing youth with critical work experience and income during these challenging times,” said MLA Lagassé. “These grants represent a strong investment in our youth by helping them get involved in our communities and parks while kick-starting their career prospects.” Selected recipients in the constituency of Dawson Trail include: • Town of Ste. Anne - $5,177 • RM of Taché - $14,303 • Richer Dawson Trail Museum - $4,633 • The Church at Pine Ridge $6,812 • Richer Community Club $11,986

• Division scolaire franco-manitobaine - $4,212 • Seine River School Division - $16,200 • RM of Ste. Anne - $4,768 Urban and Hometown Green Team grants allow communities to hire youth aged 15 to 29 to work on community projects between May 1 and Sept. 30. Non-profit organizations in Winnipeg and rural Manitoba are eligible to receive 100 per cent of wage costs and $250 per position for support costs, while municipal governments receive 50 per cent of wage costs and $125

per position for support costs, on a cost-shared basis. The province is maintaining its 2020 funding level for Green Teams, which had doubled from 2019 to stimulate youth job creation during the pandemic. Priorities for the 2021 summer season are focused on community-based organizations and municipal governments that can offer full-time employment opportunities for youth, and projects that support COVID-19 response and recovery efforts.

Accueil Kateri Centre is Accepting Winter Clothing Donations

With the Spring weather arriving it’s time to put away our winter clothing! Please consider giving your children’s gently used outerwear which you feel won’t fit next year to the Ste-Anne food bank, Accueil Kateri Centre. The food bank volunteers are already getting prepared for next winter, gathering items to give to children in need. It’s best if the items are functional, but they also accept ski pants which need repairs. They also need toques, mittens and socks. You can place your donations in the yellow bin behind the food bank at 132 Centrale or in one of the boxes in the RC Church, either in the Church entrance or in the office. Thanks in advance for your generosity.

Preparing For

Little Funk Library

Dear Editor: Hi, I am Rhonda Funk, your local Little Free library steward for The Little Funk Library #100068. Our Little Library is located on the north side of the Trans Canada Highway, just off Road 43e at 42139 Highway 1 East, a mile west of Richer. Our Little Free Library has been up and running since the fall of 2020. We are anticipating many guests as the summer/camping/ cottage traffic arrives. We will be connecting with local schools in the area to help spread the word that we are here and to help reach more families in the area. Literacy is important at any age and we want to make sure we are known and accessible to all, offering both English and French Books. Little Free Librarys are a free book-sharing box where anyone may take a book or share a book. You do not need to share a book in order to take one. When the time comes that you have one to share, you can give back to the one you visited or one from a different area. The adventure is your’s to have. I just love the whole concept of a Little Free Library and how it connects and builds community amongst its members. As a book lover I never miss an opportunity to

visit one as I get very excited to see what adventures it holds. As It is my passion to provide free books in our community and to those passing through, I strive to fill The Little Funk Library with books for all - young children to the elderly. I have also made plans to add little extras to our Library... currently we have hidden rocks and coloring pages. To celebrate the month of May: - We will be making bookmarks out of seed paper. Meaning you can plant them and grow some lovely flowers. These will be placed inside the library and are available to vistors. - I encourage mini seed packages for gardens to be left for sharing. -For some fun we will also have some specially wrapped books with a small description as part of our Don’t Judge A Book By Its Cover: Blind Date/ Play Date... think of it like a surprise book. Little Free Libraries run mainly on donations. If you are able, please leave a book or 2 in the library and for larger donations please contact me via facebook page “The Little Funk Library # 100068” or 204422-9848 for arrangements. OUR WISH LIST: Books aimed for boys ages 7-13 (examples are Diary of a Wimpy

End of Life Care

Kid, Dogman, Nate the Great, and adventure books), books for young adults - male, comic books, and any French books. All donations are greatly appreciated. The above is just a guide line of what we are lacking for selection. If you enjoy reading or have someone in your life who does, I encourage you to come visit us at The Little Funk Library or to go for a walk or drive and find a Little Free Library to visit. You can access the LFL maps on the Littlefreelibrary.org website and find a hidden one near you. Many Little Free Libraries have a guest book or a Facebook page to follow... don’t hesitate to leave a note for the steward, we always look forward to the messages from guests. Death is not typically something we are dying to do. This includes the daunting tasks of preparing for this event. Components such as estate planning, and pre-need funeral arrangements are commonplace in our society, but with the innovations of medical technology comes the responsibility to ensure that wishes for our medical care are documented. Advance Care Planning focuses on this preparation. In Manitoba the document is a Health Care Directive and you must be 16 years of age. It is a document best written when one is healthy and able to make decisions to guide health care teams on personal requests for medical or non-medical care when you are specifically unable to speak for yourself. You may name up to two proxies or designates to be consulted with regarding your decisions. It is advised to engage in detailed conversations with your family and proxies regarding specific wishes and you’re guiding beliefs and values that make your life worth living. It is imperative to be as specific as possible as to which treatments and procedures are acceptable and which are not. This will ultimately direct caregivers in what may be end of life care. While it is impossible to include every medical scenario, your directive can clearly speak to your wishes when you cannot speak for yourself. Ensure to involve your doctor or nurse practitioner and although it is not necessary to consult a lawyer, you may wish to do this. It is critical to make sure that your plan is accessible. Provide copies to your proxies, health care team, leave a copy where it would be available to first responders and take copies with you when traveling. Lastly, review this document every three years or anytime circumstances change that may affect prior decisions. A copy of the Manitoba Health Care Directive form can be downloaded at Health Care Directive (Living Will) gov.mb.ca). Written by Elizebeth Kischook, End of Life Doula www.yoursinlifeanddeath.ca
