Dawson Trail Art and Heritage Commemorative Trail Plan

The Dawson Trail Art and Heritage Tour has announced a Commemorative Trail Plan. It aims to install permanent markers highlighting traditional names and topographical features of the Dawson Trail as they were known at the time of construction. These trail markers will more or less follow the traditional Dawson Trail route starting from the Red River colony (now known as St-Boniface), rural communities of Lorette, Dufresne, Sainte-Anne, La Ste. Anne between 10:00 am and Coulée, Richer and beyond! Thank you for your structure, while the stacked horisupport. zontal lines behind the interpretive panels are reminiscent of the corduroy road that was built along much of the historic trail that ran through swamps (or muskegs as the Métis called them), and a rough ter-

rain that extended from the boreal forest to the east, over gravel ridges and a landscape of lush, rich flora and botanicals, across the waters of the Whitemouth and Brokenhead, and along the La Coulée and Seine Rivers, to finally arrive at the open prairie fields leading west towards the Red River colony. With the help of a heritage consultant and curator, Mireille Lamontagne, they took it one step further to create specific symbols for each of these segments. These will further distinguish the inherent character of the regions and create “visitor experiences” specific to each one. Stay tuned for those designs coming soon!

Feelings of fear and dread are very common when we are faced with contemplating our own death and is the experience commonly known as Death Anxiety. In fact, Wikipedia defines it as anxiety caused by thoughts of one’s own death; it is also referred to as thanatophobia (fear of death). This type of anxiety is characterized by fears of bodily failure, pain, separation, and loss of control and power. Fear of death comes in many forms. When the fear of death and dying develops into a preoccupation, this fear can develop into an anxiety disorder and begin to affect your mental health. Some people are afraid of everything related to dying whether it be bodies, graves, funeral parlors, while other instances are more concerned with the fear of their own direct mortality instead. Death is more of a universal fear. It is also important to note that you can have a fear of death without having an anxiety disorder since death is something that most

people are naturally programmed to fear for the sake of evolution and the survival of the human race. In some cases, fear of death can be all encompassing and consuming, halting normal day to day living. These intense, paralytic thoughts can be indicative of an anxiety disorder. It’s only when the phobia drastically alters the way you live your life that it becomes a serious problem. If you go out of your way to avoid certain everyday situations or are intensely afraid of anything that even resembles danger to the point where it causes significant disruption in your life, your fear of death represents a problem that may require treatment. Death management theory also states that not everyone will develop death anxiety like a fear of flying, but risk factors including age, traumatic events, parents experiencing death and our own health are definite considerations that can cause a predisposition.
