On The Runway At 103

It all started last month when Valerie Laroche, an employee at the Villa Youville got married. A number of residents mentioned they would love for her to wear her wedding dress to work. “I thought no way am I doing this alone, so I asked other staff members and residents to join

me and put on a just-for-fun fashion show.” The runway models were mostly staff members and a couple residents who joined in the fun, dressing up and walking down the runway for everyone to enjoy! The models where mostly showcasing grad dresses, wedding dresses, and evening wear with some having gentlemen escorts dressed in lavish suits. One runway model was Mrs. Luciean Sluis who celebrated her 103rd Birthday this past may. Mrs. Sluis was a delight. She recollected about her childhood and how her parents passed when she was very young. She grew up on her aunt an uncle’s farm

where she has fond memory’s of sneaking into the pigs’ pen when she was no more then 4 or 5 years old. She would play with the piglets, playing with their curly tails. She went on to remember starting to work on the farm around 13 where she helped out with various farm chores. Mrs. Sluis said she met her husband Theodore while they where working together. He was painting and she was cleaning and a mutual friend said they where both alone so they should be together and went off to successfully arrange it. She was 40 when she married Theodore, who was a widower. She became step mother to his children after their

mother passed not quit a year earlier. When I asked Mrs. Sluis what her secret was she threw up her arms and said it must be God’s will. I’m still here! She mentioned she has a family member who lived to 100 and 3 months.
