Ste. Anne Lions Club held a fundraising craft and bake sale this past December to raise funds for the Knights of Columbus Christmas hampers. “It went well. We raised $311 and two boxes of groceries for the Christmas hampers, said Lion Rick shortly before Knight Roger stopped by the show to pick up all the proceeds and take a photo with the Lions. The bake sale also raised $230 for future Lions Club projects in the Town of Ste. Anne.

Tupperware Vendor Suzanne donated 10% of her sales to the Knights of Columbus. for Christmas Hampers.

Success at the Ste. Anne Adult Ed Centre Tiffany was working at a minimum wage job in an agricultural processing plant when she decided she wanted something better in life. She was pregnant with her first child. “I just couldn’t see myself staying in that job with no benefits and long hours. The problem was I quit school when I was 16 so the job opportunities were pretty limited.” A friend told her about the Adult Learning Centre in Ste Anne. After she had her child, a little boy named Wyatt, life changed. “I wanted to be a good example for my son so I decided to go back and finish my education and graduate.” In the fall of 2012 she started classes. “Walking through that door and registering was really hard, but I knew if I wanted to change my life I had to stick with it. School was never a place I felt I belonged.” Wyatt is going to be two in a few months. A short time after his birthday Tiffany will be graduating from the Learning Centre with her Mature High School Diploma. “I want my son to be proud of me and finish school like his mom did. My dream is to go on to college and become a nurse.” The Ste. Anne Learning Centre’s Executive Director, Fiorella LaVergne, says, “Tiffany is typical of most students who come to the Centre. Everyone has a different reason for coming back to school, whether it is to upgrade skills or just finish their high school education. That’s what we are here for.” The Centre has seen almost a thousand students pass through its doors since it opened in 1999. Tiffany is just one the many graduates that will be donning a cap and gown in June and finishing something they started a few years ago. “I’m very excited. Now I feel I have a future or at least a new start in life.”

Bibliothèque Ste-Anne Library Celebrates 20th Anniversary The Bibliothèque Ste-Anne Library (BSAL) celebrated its 20th anniversary in conjunction with the re-opening of the new children’s corner. This new area is dedicated to the Ste. Anne Royal Canadian Legion La Verendrye Branch 220, as their generous donation of $5,000 was used to enlarge and brighten the children’s area. Nine members of the Legion were in attendance along with previous directors, library volunteers, members of the community including the Town of SainteAnne Council and Ste. Anne Lions Club, Father Gabriel Levesque, and a few children from the pre-school program which is held in the library. The children presented a wreath to the Legion president in honour of the 100th anniversary of World War I and Remembrance Day. Clément Charrière, one of the original founders of BSAL was asked to cut the ribbon and Norbert Ritchot, the previous president, was invited to give a short history of the library from its inception. Michelle Larocque, president of the library council, thanked everyone in attendance particularly the volunteers and the Legion members for their dedication to the library. The Lions Club was also thanked for the loan of their peace posters prepared by students from two elementary schools in the area. It is hoped that this year, new programs will be offered at the library to serve the community in a positive way. The BSAL welcomes your suggestions. The library is located at 16 rue de l’Église in Sainte-Anne. A free membership for all members of the Town and the RM of Ste-Anne can be obtained by contacting librarian Mona Gauthier at 204-422-9958. The municipalities pays the library directly for their residents’ memberships.

Christmas Fun at the Villa

Ste. Anne Lions Club had a fun evening when they escorted residents from Ste. Anne Villa on a bus tour around the town to view all the Christmas lights. Even two elves jumped on board to accompany them. On the bus Lion Chris Barnard was the emcee and kept everyone informed of what street they were on and pointed out past winners of the town’s Christmas light contests. When everyone got off the bus, Lion Santa Claus, Lion Mrs. Claus, Lion helper elves and Lion Pat Barnard where eagerly waiting to serve them cookies and hot chocolate. After a snack everyone joined together and sang Christmas carols and had an evening of fellowship. “We had a good turnout and everyone had lots of great questions about the Lions Club. We would also like to thank the Seine River School Division for donating the use of a school bus for the last two years. The Lions Club looks forward to touring the town again next year.
