Ste. Anne Sparkles

The Ste. Anne Lions Club recently hosted their annual town cleanup. “We had a great turnout and the weather was perfect, everyone did a great job, said Cathy Roy, a member of the club. Teams even showed up eager to start the day with bags of garbage already collected along their way to the park. As participants arrived they chose sections of the town they wanted to tackle then teams went out and cleaned up debris that accumulated over the winter. Two of the Lions Club members went around visiting businesses offering to wash their windows. After done participants where invited back to the park for a free barbeque lunch and free face painting for the little ones. The Ste. Anne Lions Club would like to thank everyone who came out to enjoy the day with them and to the schools for helping the week prior.

New MLA Voters in the constituency of Dawson Trail have elected not only a new MLA, but a new party. Bob Lagasse who represents the PC Party of Manitoba becomes our representative in the Provincial Legislature. Lagasse garnered more votes than Terry Hayward of the Manitoba Liberals, Roxane Dupuis of the NDP and David Sutherland of the Manitoba Party to win the seat on April 19.

Final Funding Stretch for “Accessible” Playground

Ecolé Ste. Anne Immersion’s (ESAI) Parent Advisory Council (PAC) is reaching out to the membersof the community for donations. The goal is to add some wheelchair accessible play elements and a new play structure along with a decentralized play space at ESAI. Over the last 6 years, the PAC has raised over $115,000 in cash donations, time commitments, and savings. Their shortfall is now under $9,000. The PAC has recognized the fact that Ste. Anne has no wheelchair accessible play structures. They are in the process of updating and adding 4 handicap accessible elements. They have also planned a

green space that adds two additional wheelchair accessible elements. About 1/6th of their cost ($20,916) comes from adding essential equipment that welcomes children and families of all abilities. The parents of ESAI formed a non-profit organization and took on a long-term capital project to fundraising $125,498.90 to modernize, add wheelchair access, increase the capacity, and add a decentralized natural play area. They have also just completed an engineering inspection and the plan is to remove three unsafe parts immediately and make it safe until it can be decommissioned by the end of the school year. The proposed natural play area will include boulder, log, and mound features – will also include some new ideas for the schoolyard. It adds a creative, quiet space, and an outdoor classroom. during the Annual Kite Festival on June 11 at the Ste. Anne soccer park just south of the fire hall. The Walk registration is planned for 10 am and the walk will start at

10:30 am. Participants can choose two options for walking... a short walk of approximately 20 minutes or a longer walk for those who really want to get some exercise (about 30 – 45 minutes). For participants to join it’s a minimum donation of $25 for adults. Walkers will receive a donation receipt. Kids walk for free. There will be team challenges. A team of 10 who commit to raising $1,000 receive matching team t-shirts. Gift cards giveaways are available for other levels of funds raised. “The Alzheimer Society has been providing services in Ste. Anne since February of this year,” said walk organizer

Leona Doerksen, who is also the Regional Coordinator of the Alzheimer Society. “We are so honored to be asked to share in the Kite Festival Family Day. Families are so important especially to people who have been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s or other dementia. It is possible to live well, even with dementia, when we have the help and support we need. Thanks to the Lions’ Club for this opportunity to have a Walk for Alzheimer’s to bring awareness and help raise funds for the Alzheimer Society.” For more information or to register for the walk you can contact Leona at 204-326-5771, email alzse@alzheimer.mb.ca or visit www.alzheimer.mb.ca.
