Geppetto’s 1st Annual Chili Cook Off Joins Battle Against Breast Cancer
By Cathleen Roy The First Annual Chili Cook Off held at Geppetto’s in support of fighting Breast Cancer in early September was considered a complete success. The day included a silent auction complete with a grand prize of two 50 yard line Box Seat Tickets to a Winnipeg Blue Bomber game. A total of eight contestants entered the competition.
For a $5.00 donation spectators were able taste and vote for their favorite. Spectators were handed a bowl and took part in tasting each contestant’s chili entered into the contest. When the tasting was complete, the adhoc judges were asked to vote for their top three favorites with a first, second and third place rating. Cash prizes were handed out to the top 3 winners. Third place
took home $25, second place received $50 and first place put a $100 in their pocket. “I’m glad I saw the ad in The In Seine Newsletter,” said Sue, Second Place winner. “I had a great time and will definitely be entering again next year.” “My Chili is my own creation and this is the first time I’ve made it,” commented Rick , the third place winner. “I think it turned out
good.” Contestant Roger says he heard about the Chili Cook off when he stopped in for a hot dog and saw the sign. He said he will be back next year and this event seems well organized. “My Mom is a close family friend of Sandy’s (owner of Sandy’s Snack Shack) and I think this is a great concept,” said Hillary Chaput. “My mother, Ruby Chaput, is battling Breast Cancer. Ruby is the whole reason the Chili Cook Off came to be.” Organizer, Sandy Cote said she would like to thank everyone for coming out to supporting this great cause. 1st place winner was awarded to Marie. The event helped raise $1,000 for the fight against Breast Cancer. “I hope everyone marks there calendars for next year when we do our second annual cook off in August 2013,” concluded Sandy.

Fire Causes Ross To Evacuate A fire burnt out of control recently starting just north of the Trans Canada Hwy just off of PR 302 which soon became out of control causing the evacuation of the community of Ross. The fire started in a farmyard where a barn burned and the flames then spread northeastward. The seriousness of the blaze forced the Province of Manitoba to send in water bombers and helicopters to battle the fire from the air while approximately 75 emergency personnel fought the fire on the ground. Along with the evacuation of Ross, a number of other homes in affected areas were also evacuated affecting approximately 70 people. The community centre in Ste. Genevieve had its doors open for a bi-weekly food hamper distribution when the fire started. Without hesitation they quickly opened their door to the evacuated residents. The evacuation was lifted and all roads where open for travel by late the following day as the firefighters received some much need assistance from Mother Nature with the rain and snowfall. No injuries were reported or homes lost, just a few storage buildings.

While walking through the mall the other day, my 3 year old son said, “Mama, is this the mall?” “Sure is,” I replied. He then stopped in his tracks and said (with arms waving and a funny British accent), “Mirror, mirror, on the wall, who is the most beautiful of the-mall?”
Dead Geese Disposed of in Ditch
My 3 1/2 year-old daughter was playing with her toddler brother one afternoon when she came running up to me, upset. Syd: Mom, he bit my cheek. Me: That’s terrible! What should we do about it? Syd: I think we should give him back to the doctor! After explaining to her that he’s OUR baby and we can’t give him back to the doctor, she suggested we try returning him to the hospital!
Rhonda Funk spotted a horrible site on October 3. Just outside La Coulee - right at the intersection of Dawson Trail and Faucher Rd in the south ditch she stopped to investigate. She saw these geese, 6 in total. Rhonda took a look to see what had happened and was sickened to find they had been shot and left there. “Some body parts were missing. One had no neck, others the chest was ripped open. I don’t think this was caused by an animal as there was no evidence of that,” Rhonda told the In Seine Newsletter. “Not sure if they were shot there or dumped as there is no evidence of that either, just scattered.” “This is sick, inhumane and gives responsible hunters a bad name. Reality is we may not know who did it and may never catch the person but maybe residences nearby can keep an eye out,” continued Rhonda. If anyone has information on this senseless crime please contact the Steinbach RCMP at 204-326-1234.

A little laugh... Old Ms. Robinson went out into her backyard to do some gardening when she heard some noise coming from the yard next door. She peered over the fence and saw that her neighbor’s little daughter was digging a hole. “Sally what are you doing with that shovel?” asked Ms. Robinson. “My goldfish died, so I’m burying him,” replied young Sally. “Oh that’s tragic. I’m very sorry for your loss. But why are you digging such a big hole for your goldfish?” asked Ms. Robinson. ”Because your darn cat ate it!” replied Sally.
