“Whether I paint skies, roads, houses or trees, I use light and shadow in a very deliberate way to communicate my ideas and emotions within a given painting. I am interested in light as a life-giving force that binds us— a common presence we feel in our separate lives, reminding us of our shared reality. The sun that glimmers on a wall or shines on a face is the same light that is beheld by human eyes everywhere. It is an energy that guides us through its warmth, rejuvenation and joy. The sun has long been one of the most powerful symbols in art, representing all aspects of humanity. In this body of work, I have chosen the sun as a symbol, and I define it as a unifying message of love. My objective in painting this exhibition is to express the beautiful and poetic power of light, and I hope the message that is discovered is one that leads us out of darkness and reveals truth and beauty in all its manifestations.” - Mark Beck
