VIEW FROM THE INSIDE
MARK
SEPTEMBER 5 - 28, 2024
“I’ve chosen the theme of the interior with a window as a metaphor for consciousness. The window refers to the world outside and the interior refers to our inner world. We are created and formed by the world and, in turn, create our worlds, both inside and out.
I’ve always been drawn to a narrative, but not in the usual sense as a complete story. I prefer an open-ended and somewhat ambiguous story, but with an implicit poignancy. There is subjective content and meaning in each piece, but I’m not eager to get too specific beyond the title because I don’t want to prejudice the viewer unnecessarily. I want the viewer to be able to take the image freely, according to their own lives and experiences.
Edward Hopper said his aim in painting was to get at himself. That has always struck me - the simplicity of his goal. My aim is similar. I want to define what I find beautiful for what it reveals about me and the world I see.”
