Tyson Grumm’s “Contrapparatus” is inspired by legendary Reuben Garrett Lucius Goldberg, aka Rube Goldberg. A sculptor, author, engineer, and inventor, Goldberg became famous when the newspapers of New York published his cartoons of absurd inventions in the early 1900s. Grumm and Goldberg share in their unyielding drive to push the limits of the practical and improve upon systems, if only for the sake of absurd theatrics. Grumm’s style of surrealism shines in a world of ongoing creation and imagination, where the ideology of constant modification regardless of logical purpose takes hold. Of course, the laws of reality might limit any real application of these strange contraptions, however, art is where those limits can be ignored for the pursuit of beauty, humor, delight, and curiosity.
