PAT R I CK LO C I C E R O TEM PE ST JA N UA RY 6 - 27, 2022 “Tempest” takes its inspiration from turn of the century seascape and landscape paintings. Looking to the time period and the idea of braving the elements, confronting turbulence, and facing the forces of nature, LoCicero creates parallels to our present-day challenges of living through and navigating a pandemic. In this new body of work, Winslow Homer plays an integral part, along with Frederic Edwin Church, Constable, Thomas Eakins and the artists of the Hudson River School. The artist literally incorporates the melodramatic, sentimental, theatrical, and romantic aspects of early 20th century culture through collaging archival ephemera from art history, poetry and music of the era into his paintings. Comprised of three cantos, or segments—departure, journey, and return—“Tempest” tells a metaphorical allegory through images of schooners, ships, skiffs and boats. LoCicero’s paintings represent his ongoing interest in combining overlap and collage with painting. His compositions reference the idea of traveling in time and space, and refer to this as a metaphor for moving through memories and their associations. The overlap and collage elements relate directly to the images he depicts, guiding him in his choice of subjects. LoCicero’s collage paintings inventively reinterpret the collage technique that was developed during the Cubist era, as he reinvigorates one of the most important modes of expression in the art of the 20th Century. LoCicero received his BFA at Ohio State University and received his MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute. He has shown in galleries all across the US and his works can be found in many distinguished public and private collections.

Breezing Up, Oil & collage on canvas, 36 x 48 in, $6,000.00
Inspired by the Winslow Homer painting of the same name, this piece contains charged compositional elements from Frederick Church and Thomas Eakins paintings. The painting is divided into three horizontal sections: water, land and sky.
Remember Me, Oil & collage on panel, 72 x 60 in, $15,000.00 This painting is a romantic depiction of the perils of schooner travel. The ring of flowers blows in the wind and is an homage to all the lives lost in such journeys and adventures.
Sails, Oil & collage on canvas, 34 x 48 in, $5,700.00
Two ships with sails up head in different directions. Choppy waters and hidden collaged fishermen navigate rough waters. The ships are stand-ins for human interaction, separated and divided, parting ways.
Sampans In Formation, Oil & collage on canvas, 40 x 46 in, $6,500.00 This piece is influenced from LoCicero’s travels in South Asia—the rich textures, light and patterns of Cambodia and Vietnam. The dynamic lighting divides the painting diagonally and cuts through both the background texture and the sampans.

Running Aground, Oil & collage on canvas, 34 x 54 in, $6,500.00 Tethered to supports outside the picture plane with collaged rigging in the waves, “Running Aground” sets up a narrative of either survival or destruction. Will the vessel crash into the rocks or be pulled to safety?
Life Line, Oil & collage on canvas, 34 x 54 in, $6,500.00 This painting metaphorically conveys the idea of struggling through rough waters with waves made up of collaged Homer paintings depicting shipwrecks, high winds and violent storms. A lonely, isolated figure in the distance waits for the safe return of loved ones. The life line rope dangles in the wind, hoping to be secured.
Blue Rose, Oil & collage on canvas, 43 x 44 in, $6,600.00 The boat in this painting teeters on the edge of a wave. Hidden roses are collaged in the upward waves. The vessel is buoyed by the hopefulness of the hidden flowers. One could imagine that the small boat’s christened name is “Blue Rose.”

Abandoned Skiff, Oil & collage on canvas, 34 x 48 in, $5,700.00 This painting is inspired by Frederic Church’s romanticized painting of 1850, paying homage to the history of sentimental boat paintings from the turn of the century. It depicts the abandoned hull of a boat at the end of its life, surrounded by wildflowers as if in a cemetery.
Low Tide, Oil & collage on canvas, 34 x 60 in, $7,200.00 This painting conveys a craft at the end of its journey, marooned high on the banks and deep into the mud and sand of a low tide. The shadows of the boat convey a more warm and bucolic setting with collaged imagery from vintage Frederic Edwin Church paintings.
Tug, Oil & collage on canvas, 33 x 36 in, $4,200.00 The purpose of this vessel is to push, tow and assist larger or disabled vessels. It is the work-horse of the industry. Tugs have a strong history in the Pacific Northwest Region.
Ferry Boat View, Oil & collage on canvas, 33 x 36 in, $4,200.00 Ferry boats are also commonplace in the Pacific Northwest and have long been a relied upon mode of transportation. For many, ferries are a means of arriving at outdoor destinations in order to enjoy the beauty of nature. This painting captures the romantic views seen from the boat in the collaged elements, as the ferry travels toward distant horizons.
Shipwreck, Oil & collage on canvas, 36 x 48 in, $6,000.00 With its frozen wave jutting up in triumph and the cold desolate terrain depicted, “Shipwreck” poetically conveys the idea of isolation. The angled placement of the boat in the lower forefront of the painting makes the viewer confront the broken warped boat among the rocks being swallowed by the landscape.
TEM P O
Historical research and initial journal development of “Tempest” came from exploring the artists, composers and poets of the time period. “Tempo” is a collection of mixed media works on canvas that is inspired by turn of the century music and prose, with each composer and writer represented by a particular animal. This collection can be considered in this new body of work as journaling or conceptual sketching that led to the larger works of art in “Tempest.” The small narrow format was conceived of in a grouping as if notes on a page.
