ELEMENTS OF URBAN FORM M AY 2 0 2 1

Katie Metz’ works reveal a way of seeing beneath the immense and frenetic surface of city life to the unity and human connection we have within it. Metz finds a steady and unbroken peace in an otherwise teeming, bustling urban scene. Her compositions are created from personal reference and imagination, painting the way a city feels rather than any specific locations. A never-ending fascination for the artist, she is captivated by the way a city constantly changes and grows, a vertical playground that is both hurried and hushed. Her cities come alive with character, as she applies many thin layers of paint and promptly scrapes and scratches away at the surface. Her vibrant works use subtraction to imply some structure and urban gridding, but also the shifting light reflecting on high-rise windows, car headlights, and slick wet roadways.

Metz was raised on a farm outside Boulder, Colorado. This setting provided her imagination with a vast playground on which to envision endless ways of seeing the world around her. Metz developed traditional painting skills studying alongside notable established painters during the late 1990’s. By 2000, She was showing her work in venues throughout the Boulder area. In 2005, Metz moved to Seattle intent on furthering her career as an artist. In her new urban environment, Metz began expanding her painting methods by experimenting with new approaches and materials. This led to her style and invention of what she calls “scratchboard painting”, using razor blades in tandem with the brush to create expressive, anonymous cityscapes.

Over the last 10 years, Metz’ cityscapes have been exhibited in annual solo exhibitions and group shows in the Pacific Northwest and in the Southwest. Her works are held in numerous private collections around the world.
