T YSON G RUMMM TH E STORY O F... J UN E 2021

Patricia Rovzar Gallery is honored to present our 23rd annual solo exhibition with Tyson Grumm. Over the years, we have seen Grumm’s imagination stretch into the most fantastical and whimsical places. Many of his characters have developed into familiar friends, while others have just entered the scene. This exhibition calls into action all of Grumm’s enthusiasts, a type of collaborative visual storytelling. Z

TYSON GRUMM The Story of … An Artist’s Statement I make stories not by words, not by pen, but with paint. Why do I choose to spend the majority of my life making up stories with a brush and paint? I am not sure I can fully answer that question, but I do know that every day I look forward to making up yet another story with my brush. There is magic in making a visual story with no words and no sound and at its core it’s very primitive. My stories are told in the one language that every person at every age understands, pictures. Telling a story is not as simple as you might think. A good story needs to draw you in, it needs to be compelling and make you want to know more. Some stories are simple, some are confusing, some are complex but they all must be thought provoking. I have told thousands of made-up stories and have thought of thousands more that I’ve never told. I spend my days living inside my head seeing fragments of what could later become chapters in my stories. Now here comes the weirdest part; when I get done telling a story with my paint on wood and I share it with others, they actually have a different story than that of mine. That’s right, it’s a story that when viewed through a different lens, actually mutates. I don’t fully understand this alchemy. It’s like, we as humans all want to make up stories. I tell a story with paint and the viewer is compelled to make into a new story.

Let me show you my latest story and let’s hear yours.
