I’ve been considering the idea of rewilding since about 2010 when I became interested in shamanism. What followed is an ever-growing interest in ancestral skills and learning about mutual aid, colonialism and equity. In my artistic practice, this has manifested as a shift to an interest in painting whole-body tattoos, as well as bringing in the magical element of animal spirits. Examining how I can free myself from old concepts of comfort was further prompted by my back injury in late 2020, primarily caused by an accumulation of stress and created neuropathic pain. I had no choice but to cut my workload in half to make room for a gentler lifestyle. I had already been shifting toward watercolor, but this part of my practice has become even more focused since the injury. There is an immediacy to the technique that requires utmost attention yet also carries the tenderness of the moment in a way that feels physically and emotionally very good to me. All of my figures in this exhibition are bald, a direct opposition to the societal definition of femininity’s long flowing locks. I explore baldness as it relates to the deep sense of vulnerability that I experienced during the injury, but also the vulnerability we all have felt in our two years of the pandemic. I want to show a vulnerability that also faces the viewer with strength and courage, not victimhood. We are all hungry for profound authenticity in sharing ourselves with all our flaws, insecurities, and fears, but also in our resilience during these times. I choose to find my own wild path, less groomed and certainly not paved.
