Audra earned her B.F.A. from Laguna College of Art and Design and her M.F.A in painting from Claremont Graduate University. Since then, she has exhibited extensively, and her work can be found in private and public collections throughout the world—from New York and San Francisco to Hong Kong, Abu Dhabi and Singapore.
While I was raised and live in Southern California, I spent many summers with my grandparents in the Pacific Northwest where the dense green forests and vibrant spring flora were an oasis compared to the intense sunlight and ocean views that defined my native landscape.
This past winter I revisited “Waterfall Alley” on the Columbia River in anticipation of my first exhibition at Patricia Rovzar Gallery. It was during this trip that I was again struck by the sheer power and drama of the waters falling and finding their way through the rocky crevices. Yet the atmospheric mist reflecting colors across the spectrum was by turns calming and meditative.
The play of light on water has always inspired me. My work often re-presents such shimmering, movable surfaces in an abstract, painterly way–one that can provoke an emotional response. These recomposed surfaces can also give us a glimpse of our inner states, creating a dynamic space between reflection and projection.
My technique—whereby I “find” the composition while vigorously sanding through layers of paint covered in a veil of white—also gives the work a more sculptural depth that encourages viewers to immerse themselves in a deep, natural experience.
