CONTEXT

High Flood Hazard Moderate Flood Hazard

Wuhan, China.

A city that is recognizable for its political, economic, cultural and

transportation of central China. Cultural and urban development have led to attract people from all over the country; the issue comes when natural disasters happen and slow down progress and improvement of the city. Flooding has been devastating throughout the years so planning for future habitants and the future of Wuhan needs to work by the side of water. Water and land, techonolgy and nature, juxtapositions that can be somehow broken and work together.

The illustration is trying to expose this edge condition be-

tween the existent urban density and water, and how we can forecast urban and landscaping strategies to connect people to the waterfonts.

We came to the conclusion that it

all starts with changing the canal. First, we implement a new grid system focused on directing the campus waterfront. By doing so, we develop a clear center of the camus. This center allows for the manipulation and massing of buildings to dace the canal and speak to each other. The grid creates a matric of needed density lacking from the current unrponounced campus layot. and intimacy with Huxi’s River;s historical context.

water filtration plan will clean water from river outlets, which does not address surface runoof. Therefore, the future plan will incorporate rain gardens, green roofs, green walls, and bioswales to capture, clean, and filter the water before it reaches the Huxi River.

TUSTINABILITY

CONTEXT

Tustainability is about creating spaces that truly belong to the resident; to make it their own, and to protect a piece of themselves. We want to solve a growing problem of development which is promoting the awareness of cognitive health through sus-tainable design. Mental health as defined by former U.S. Surgeon General, Dr. Vivek Murthy, declared loneliness a serious health epidemic, a “more common pathology than heart disease or diabetes in his practice experience. Loneliness directly impacts mental and physical health, and is a gateway condition to deviant behavior. A design that brings people together to interact on a daily basis is key to achieving good mental health. Bringing people through well-designing parks and lakes. recreation facilities such as playgrounds and sitting areas and an Basis on com-munity gardens. Such facilities as kindergartens, preschools, daycare, after-school programs, programs for the elderly ensure that all can enjoy and be in the company of others. The sense of community is enhanced by courtyard activation zones. With less loneli-ness, we will see a rise in good mental health among residents.

SITE

The intent behind master-planning this

community is to allow strangers to become acquainted with one another, with the hope of forming life-lasting bonds. From simple nods to actually stopping to engage in conversation, and then inviting each other over for occasions.

Our

team’s

architectural

concept

of

“pixelation” is to pull masses in and out to create a terraced effect. We maximize the use of space, and give a more equal ratio of outdoor and indoor spaces to encourage an outdoor lifestyle within the comforts of one’s home. The terracing effect that we have designed gives a visual effect of larger courtyards in what would be smaller spaces. These spaces appear larger, but give an intimate effect of walking through a garden

Oppressed Deck Rendering. Photoshop.

The Shift collaboration explores how architecture can be a catalyst for changing perceptions and paradigms about liberty and freedom in today’s society. We approached design believing that terrain can work with built structures to evoke feeling of oppression, danger effort, and achievement providing an impactful experience of liberty and freedom for everyone. Freedom and Liberty two words that through the period of this course we’ve tried to define. Two words which in my opinion are approached differently by everyone, based in their backgrounds and stories lived through their lives. These stories have shaped the way they think, act, talk and defines themselves as a human. Although, everyone has it’s own definition I believe freedom and liberty are defined by fighting for your goals and dreams in life. Fighting for your personal goals and dreams will give you another reason to live, to fulfill you potential, to finally come in peace with yourself. The Shift is about how I believe the universal definition of freedom and liberty is, by starting to go through paths where people can’t see the end of the tunnel but they experience the path and learn from the journey so when they are prepared, they are able to set free of the oppressed journey and see the light, the Statue of Liberty.
