Orthocouralogy or The Scientific Method of Haircutting "The Journal of Orthocouralogy and Associated Disciplines" (JO-AD) will be a publication introducing a new discipline: the formal, academic study of the art, method, technique of haircutting, designated by the term "orthocouralogy." This journal aims towards the dissemination of research findings which are scientifically based, in order to improve both professional and teaching performance in the field. Such scientifically designed methodology had previously been regarded as undefinable by many or eagerly awaited by others. Overdue, then, since the early years of the 20th century, "JO-AD" should cause a significant turnaround. It is intended for all professionals, salon owners, manufacturers, and enterprises with interests in this flourishing field. STRATEGY involves two main stages of dissemination. The first involves publication of existing haircutting theories and commonly held technical beliefs, along with challenges to those assumptions. In the second stage, unlimited publication of articles dealing with non-technical aspects, such as political or legal ones, would serve as a platform or forum for investigators. BREAKTHROUGH adapts mathematics to the system of haircutting. Art is translated into science in several logical and explicit chapters. A new philosophy for instructing and also practicing is put into place. Some major institutions in the beauty industry, as well as professors, doctors, librarians, and trained stylists have already been receptive. "The creation of orthocouralogy is revolutionary and should change the way haircutting is learned...This program boosts the level of education way up." MANDATE constitutes the need to review and reform and re-analyze the validity of all previously held standards. Orthocouralogy and the journal, "JO-AD," invite a thorough, serious investigation of professional regulations on all levels, including cosmetic licensing. This will prove to be essential for all existing and potential students. Such reform is imperative and inevitable.

Operational Rules
of Orthocouralogy
Haircutting Operational Rules Before the creation of orthocouralogy, there were two basic ways a haircut could be given -- freestyle and semi-controlled haircutting modes -- and the same two basic ways to teach haircutting. The fact is, no logical method existed that could be used to learn the art of haircutting, other than developing the necessary skills using an intuitive method. (The word 'logical' here is very important, and in this context it is used intentionally.) Given these conditions, personal talent combined with the efforts of a talented instructor would likely be the main factors helping to reduce the relative time of training, and to make a student feel secure about cutting hair for a living. One major result is that people who are relatively successful become so due to their natural individual talent, rather than by gaining reliable technical knowledge (knowledge which could also enhance the development of talent and artistic performance). Consequently, we can say that there is a kind of unfair natural selection determining who can or cannot survive and make a living from the art of haircutting. This effect, along with the perception of this segment of the industry, its appeal being limited to only certain types of learners, and many other issues, is caused chiefly by the low level of academic programs offered throughout all branches of the world's beauty schools. The idea of developing a non-intuitive haircutting method is not new. The interesting fact is that those who are leading the market are indeed looking to raise the level of the educational programs. However, it is clear that this has not yet happened, and perhaps that they are even regressing.
What are the fundamental reasons that induced the creation of orthocouralogy? Based on my memory, back in around 1980, I was most concerned with the concept of giving a haircut that made technical sense. Haircutting systems and procedures had to make sense in order to be explainable. The quest to find a reliable method for giving, repeating, recording, education in a minimum time, and transmitting a way to give a haircut at the highest technical quality level, led me to create orthocouralogy in 2006. My dual concerns -- giving proper and impartial education and performing at the highest technical quality level -- were the key elements that contributed to the creation of orthocouralogy. The subsequent investigation of my hypothesis may seem strange to some artists, but it is far from strange for those who are looking for a rational way to teach how to give
haircuts based on true values. For those people, orthocouralogy should be seen as a useful tool for learning, teaching, and progress, bringing success and security to those who take an interest in this new profession. Orthocouralogy is the rational discourse on the theory that the art of haircutting can be learned and practiced based on logical, reliable haircutting principles. The use of mathematics to explain and prove the validity and utility of its fundamental haircutting elements and systems represents a critical breakthrough in this domain of the cosmetic industry. Orthocouralogy obeys rules, and is subject to mechanical systems and procedures which are defined logically. Use of common sense is a must, and developing an analytical sense is part of the outcome. The practice of orthocouralogy involves the research and development of a coherent theory which can be useful in raising the level of technical quality and improving the way students learn, which consequently could improve artistic development. In terms of human factors, an important belief is that orthocouralogy will help overall to improve the quality of professional life. To define the position of orthocouralogy as to how haircutting operations are conducted, compared with other ways of giving a haircut, I had to define those other ways in the fairest and most reasonable terms. The need to define other haircutting methods and philosophies never arose prior to the invention of orthocouralogy.
Differences in Haircutting Methods (Brief explanation)
Freestyle Haircutting Method Freestyle haircutting is an intuitive, irrational, uncontrolled method. No organized mechanical system, procedure, nor pattern models are used as technical reference. The freestyle haircutting method has no technical standards, no logical beginning or end, no logical nor non-logical plan of action. Haircutting intuitively doesn't follow technical rules or technical principles. Freestyle haircutting does not allow a haircut to be repeated or duplicated, and cannot explain how a specific haircut has been given or record its infrastructure. For the purpose of learning it is unfair to ask a student to watch someone cutting hair intuitively. It is difficult to learn by watching, difficult to expect the next move, and you can’t expect any rational explanation from the person practicing haircutting that way. Reasonably, we can tell that only people who are talented can succeed in their carrier practicing haircutting using that method.
Semi-controlled Haircutting Method Semi-controlled haircutting is an intuitive, irrational method, but it can be relatively organized. Although somewhat organized procedures and systems may be observed or used, haircutting operations are nonetheless conducted intuitively. The procedures and systems are not logically defined, therefore not logically explainable. This category of haircutting method has a wide range of technical approaches which are more or less precise. In all fairness, even assuming that someone did perform at the highest technical quality level in this haircutting category, that person still would not be able to explain logically his or her technical performance. Furthermore, the lack of technical knowledge and understanding prevents the practitioner from being able to control, transmit, record, or repeat the same technical performance. Professionals who practice haircutting using this method, at varying levels of expertise, are likely those most concerned about quality haircutting performance, and potentially those most interested in learning orthocouralogy. Neither the freestyle method nor the semi-controlled method is defined scientifically.
Orthocouralogical/Scientifically basedMethod Haircutting Method Orthocouralogy/Scientific Haircutting The creation of orthocouralogy was the result of a philosophical approach, based on a belief, research, and a conclusion, which has given the art of haircutting a new dimension. That dimension is that haircuts can be executed using systems and procedures that are logically defined. Due to the logic behind mechanical and procedural systems, orthocouralogy can be seen as a logical axiom, versus an illogical axiom. The use and adaptation of Euclidean and non-Euclidean geometry to explain how to give a haircut logically, and perform it at the highest technical quality level, is one very important facet of the invention. Orthocouralogy demystifies haircutting, and refutes the mistaken belief that haircutting is an art that can only be performed intuitively, or can only be practiced successfully by talented people.
Orthocouralogy defines the fundamental body of relevant and reliable knowledge necessary to give any haircut design with the reasonable assurance of being able to execute it at the highest technical quality level. This has the potential effect of increasing artistic performance; however, a proficient orthocouralogist can only truly guarantee quality technical performances, since artistic values are largely matters of opinion. Other factors, such as increasing security in many domains (e.g., psychological, financial, professional longevity), are expected to be some of the positive consequences of orthocouralogy. The orthocouralogical program avoids subjectivity, artistic opinions (as to what looks good or doesn't), and what lacks coherence or common sense. Conversely, it can be said that many existing instructional materials are founded on opinions, which cannot be reasonably or fairly agreed upon. These are unnecessary and even tend to hamper and slow down the teaching and learning of haircutting and styling. One of orthocouralogy's most important attributes is the adoption of an analytical approach, which enables the professional to give a haircut safely and without guesswork. Therefore, orthocouralogy is the result of research whose guiding philosophy is nothing less than rationality and objectivity. One important requisite of this research was, and still is, not to allow any development based on opinion or intuitive communication. Orthocouralogy is a coherent collection of theories giving birth to a new discipline. It is the study of haircutting making the assumption that cutting hair can be done logically. Orthocouralogy has its own unique set of rules and tenets.
Creation and Implications The creation: The search for a reliable way to give, record, repeat, transmit and explain a defined way to give a haircut at the highest quality level led to engineer the creation of orthocouralogy. The implications: Orthocouralogy has the potential to revolutionize the practice of haircutting, raise professional standards, positively impact the community of beauticians, and bring greater esteem to the industry. The idea was to create a logical method based on true values, mathematically defined. One difficult issue was to create and defined the fundamental parameters necessary to make it possible, and prove it correct. After that goal was successfully achieved, my eyes turned toward the existing textbooks, and began to analyze their technical value in a more philosophical way. To define the position of orthocouralogy as to how haircutting operations are conducted compared with other ways of cutting hair, I had first to define those other ways in the fairest terms. Some interested parties have shared my thoughts about this. Although I could not say it myself, they have said that orthocouralogy is revolutionary. The investigation of my hypothesis may be strange in the eyes of some artists. This small revolution will only be a revolution for those who desire it, and who can see it as a useful tool for teaching, learning, and progress, bringing success and security to those who pursue this new profession. Freestyle Haircutting • • •
Irrational haircutting method; no ortho-bio-mechanical system nor orthobio-procedure. No standard. Haircutting intuitively doesn't obey rules or follow principles; no rational beginning, no rational end. Not scientifically defined.
Semi-controlled Haircutting •
Intuitive organization.
•
Can follow pattern and procedure, but is not logically defined, justified or explained.
•
Use of systems and haircutting procedures conducted intuitively but not scientifically defined. One of the basic proofs of this statement is that no fundamental building element is defined.
•
No rational beginning and no rational end.
Orthocouralogy/scientific method of cutting hair •
Scientific method for giving a haircut.
•
Orthocouralogy is rational.
•
It obeys rules, and is subject to mechanical systems and procedures which are defined logically. Uses common sense.
Orthocouralogy is a coherent collection of theories giving birth to a discipline. It is also the study of haircutting, making the assumption that giving a haircut can be done logically. Orthocouralogy can be considered as an axiom. It is based on the theory-specific assumption that a haircut can be given using systems and procedures that make sense and seem logical. It involves the use of Euclidean and non-Euclidean geometry to describe the shapes of the Fundamental Building Elements. From there, standard and non-standard pattern models and mechanical systems are used and their rationales explained.

Founding of the Theory Orthocouralogical isolation principles Classification of the orthocouralogical fundamental architectural/structural haircut designs (OFAHDs) The idea and process of isolating each fundamental haircutting architectural structure contributed to the invention of a rational haircutting theory, which can be used to plan logical haircutting instruction. Curiously, though perhaps understandably, this was an instance of common sense, logic, and a touch of science meeting art. The origin of the theory was simply in having observed the structures of a large number of haircut designs. The observation phase included looking at people's hair in the streets of Manhattan without any discrimination. Experience, memory, imagination, and a great concern for technical quality performance were important factors in forging this theory. Another phase of the visual analysis was the elimination of all structural variables, in order to simplify the process and avoid confusion. The plan was to search for common technical structural denominators usable to give any haircuts. The observation was therefore made randomly, using the same analytical approach for each haircut design being studied. Later on, this experience allowed for some simple assumptions, research, and reasonable conclusions. Once most techniques for cutting hair were listed (e.g., layers, blunt, thinning, hatching, slanting, etc.), the goal was to decide which ones could be considered as being the primary/fundamental applicable techniques to give any haircut design. Without making a fair and rational choice of which techniques could be called "fundamentals" for giving any haircut design, no logical haircutting theory based on fundamental architectural principles could be possible or acceptable.

•
Allows the formalization of logical haircutting theories
•
Allows the creation of new curriculum
