Orthocouralogy or The Scientific Method of Haircutting "The Journal of Orthocouralogy and Associated Disciplines" (JO-AD) will be a publication introducing a new discipline: the formal, academic study of the art, method, technique of haircutting, designated by the term "orthocouralogy." This journal aims towards the dissemination of research findings which are scientifically based, in order to improve both professional and teaching performance in the field. Such scientifically designed methodology had previously been regarded as undefinable by many or eagerly awaited by others. Overdue, then, since the early years of the 20th century, "JO-AD" should cause a significant turnaround. It is intended for all professionals, salon owners, manufacturers, and enterprises with interests in this flourishing field. STRATEGY involves two main stages of dissemination. The first involves publication of existing haircutting theories and commonly held technical beliefs, along with challenges to those assumptions. In the second stage, unlimited publication of articles dealing with non-technical aspects, such as political or legal ones, would serve as a platform or forum for investigators. BREAKTHROUGH adapts mathematics to the system of haircutting. Art is translated into science in several logical and explicit chapters. A new philosophy for instructing and also practicing is put into place. Some major institutions in the beauty industry, as well as professors, doctors, librarians, and trained stylists have already been receptive. "The creation of orthocouralogy is revolutionary and should change the way haircutting is learned...This program boosts the level of education way up." MANDATE constitutes the need to review and reform and re-analyze the validity of all previously held standards. Orthocouralogy and the journal, "JO-AD," invite a thorough, serious investigation of professional regulations on all levels, including cosmetic licensing. This will prove to be essential for all existing and potential students. Such reform is imperative and inevitable.

Logical Methods
Before Orthocouralogy - After Orthocouralogy In preparation of the Haircutting Master Program
The need to investigate the validity of other haircutting technical principles Without investigation, research, and discovery of rational proof that the art of haircutting could be practiced logically, haircutting education could only continue to be subjective. This meant that without employing rational proof, it remained impossible to evaluate technical knowledge, and thus impossible to develop knowledge tests that are fair and objective. The research and development of orthocouralogy made it imperative to pay more attention to, and carefully review, all existing haircutting methodologies, techniques, and theories available, without discrimination (including in France). This involved legal research processes, and consideration of other available sources of information. Reasonable conclusions were founded mostly on evidence and rational thinking. In brief, and with all due respect to the entire cosmetology industry, it is safe to state that at least several technical haircutting theories and methodologies are highly questionable, to the point that some of those theories are even not applicable. Ethical beliefs From an ethical point of view, and in the name of progress, we believe it is essential, ethical, and fair at least to review all questionable theories. Furthermore, it is difficult not to question the fairness and value of haircutting exams (therefore cosmetology exams), based on the dubious validity of their technical contents and common principles, including subjective artistic theories.
REVIEW, REFORM, AND RE-ANALYZE
Left-handed versus Left-handed
Why the distinction between left- and right-handed procedures
! !
?
What is the purpose? Is it useful?
Is it a good reason to distinguish between procedures depending on whether one is left- or right-handed? Procedures that are efficient for a specific haircut design have no need to be adjusted for the left or right hand. A procedure stays the same regardless of dominant handedness. One might elect to begin a haircut one way because it is easier physically, but he or she will eventually have to face the issue of maneuvering in the opposite direction. Left- or right-handed people are likely to feel more comfortable cutting hair in one direction than the other. The reason is purely physical, and is due to having more latitude and therefore ease cutting hair moving away from the handed side. Differences exist between left- and right-handedness, but they do not necessitate or justify the use of different procedures for cutting hair. For example, the direction of the actual cutting (segment cut/SC) may be different. A right-handed person will cut right to left, and a left-handed person will cut left to right, upward or downward, relative to the position of the head. However, that fact should not affect the haircutting procedure itself. What may vary, but still should not determine the choice of procedure, is the level of physical skills one has developed to perform equally well working in one direction or the other. The notion of ease in efficiently performing physical haircutting operations and maneuvering in any direction is an issue which must be pointed out at the earliest stage of training. Students must know that imbalances in dexterity are absolutely normal, and that it takes time and practice to develop the fine motor skills to perform technical haircutting operations in all directions.
REVIEW, REFORM, AND RE-ANALYZE
Left-handed versus Left-handed Unless you are ambidextrous and able to cut hair equally well with either hand, you will have to develop the necessary physical skills to maneuver asymmetrically in order (as an example) to layer symmetrically. This type of issue can easily be resolved with proper training, the duration of which can be shortened if the issue is addressed early and relevant knowledge is introduced to resolve it. However, when haircutting is practiced in an intuitive mode, the level of attention given to this type of technical haircutting issue is unfortunately low. There is more than one obvious reason why it is important to develop precise, and accurate physical haircutting skills whether you are right and left handed. One of the main reasons involves ergonomics, a science which can be applied to maximizing technical haircutting quality performances. This study includes and seriously addresses all physical elements involved in the ergonomic haircutting platform -- Study and theory of hands, bodies, equipment, positioning, and alignments. Other reasons, such as health factors, for cultivating equal physical skills in all directions will be discussed in a future edition of the Journal of Orthocouralogy. SHORT CONCLUSION We find no explanation in the literature to substantiate that procedure. It is our believe that there is no educational use for “Left-vs right-handed procedure”. Remark In January 2012, I was invited to meet a team that develops, designs, and publishes instructional materials on haircutting and hairstyling standards. The "leftvs. right-handed procedures" theory was discussed at this time. I was critical of the left-right distinction, and voiced my concerns about this and other content. According to marketing personnel, readers liked this content; therefore, if such marketing considerations are going to drive the content, it is likely that misinformation about "left- vs. right-handed procedures” will remain in future editions. Although questioning this material compelled me to reveal an important analytical part of the orthocouralogical program, I took the risk and disclosed it at that time. Interestingly, only one person at the table agreed with my analysis. It is now important to let the industry decide. Students and instructors are the most invested in this issue, since giving and receiving correct instruction at the earliest stage of the learning process will directly influence professional behavior and success.

Master Program
Orthocouralogical procedure - sequence or order: Viewed in the broadest terms, is a series of ac/ons conducted in a par/cular order. The most basic func/on of an orthocouralogical procedure is to indicate the order rela/ve to a specific pa:ern a haircut is given. The fundamental and overarching reason for the study, research, and development of haircutting procedures is to give haircuts in the most efficient and qualitative way. Development of these procedures also facilitates haircutting instruction, and enables fair and impartial assessment of students' technical knowledge. Understanding the purpose and utility of haircutting procedures induces students to develop their critical and analytical sense, ultimately equipping them to design haircutting procedures applicable to their own artistic creations. The study and development of haircutting procedures aims to improve many aspects of cutting hair, including " 1. the amount of time required for giving a haircut, " 2. the ability to record how a haircut is given, " 3. the ability to transmit to another person how a haircut is given, " 4. the ability to repeat or duplicate a particular haircut, " 5. corrective procedures, " 6. haircutting action planning, and " 7. designing new haircuts. Procedure, or orthocouralogical-procedure (ortho-procedure), viewed in the broadest terms, is a series of actions conducted in a particular order. However, the same ortho-procedure can potentially be used to give either similar or different haircut designs (Categories, Classes, Styles, Types, Models). Haircut procedures should be engineered to provide orderly, usable technical informations which are indicated, recommended, or considered as preferred for giving specific haircut designs. A recommended or standard haircut procedure can be altered. However, the goal is to develop haircut procedure that can be considered as the most reliable, true, and efficient way to give a particular haircut. A procedure can be partial, abbreviated, or extended.
Categories of ortho-procedures (EXAMPLES) ! - Verification procedures " - System procedures " - Tracks procedures
Three basic types of standard verification (Vrif) procedures 1: Overall or all around verification/inspection (wait and dry conditions, check list) 2: Fine technical Vrif procedure (wait condition, check list) 3: Final Vrif procedure (specific conditions, check list)
Ortho-procedures technical plate or chart An ortho-procedures plate or chart is a written and/or graphic document designed to give the technical information on a specific haircut design in the shortest amount of time using using the ‘Universal Code of Haircutting’ or (UCH). When no other choice, written text technical descriptions and remarks can be made. Other specific notation (non standard) can be mentioned. Standard technical informations commonly found in ortho-procedure charts" " " - the type of pattern model (PM) used to give a haircut " - the tracks/paths order or sequence (ortho-sequence table) -‐ the direction (Tracks/paths starting and ending points) -‐ the type of technical haircutting elements used (types of OFBE/ ortho-prism -‐ the VHW (coded peripheral path description that can be used treat and structure the rest of the hair-mass) -‐ The number of ortho-tracks although more information concerning the physical properties of the hair can be included. -‐ the type of OFBE In different terms " - where (e.g., starting point and ending point; scalp/source of origin, or " " SO); ! - when (sequence, order); " - how (e.g., hand position, client position); " - why (e.g., blend, correct); " - what (pattern modes, systems, ortho-prisms, and other elements, for " " the purpose " of haircutting instruction and operation, and/or involving " " other technical actions, e.g., color, hairstyling), and " " - who (who is doing what).
" Standard Ortho-Procedures (SOP) have a logical beginning and end, and are engineered to give a haircut that is considered standard -- or, in different terms, considered as an Ortho-Fundamental Architectural Haircut Design (OFAHD) -- or a combination of OFAHDs. Standard ortho-procedure (SOP) if not logical must should sense. Non-standard ortho-haircutting procedures don’t follow a standard technical formats. The following are examples of technical haircutting elements that can treated or be found in a ortho-procedure. descriptions of orthocouralogical procedures and technical chart. There is no limitation regarding the quantity of technical informations that can be given in a technical chart. • VHWs • Construction Section (CS) mechanical system procedure (e.g., orthopolar, ortho-peripheral) • Transition Section (TS) mechanical system procedure • Parts • Distribution Center-Sector (DC-S) • Layering mechanical system procedure • Verification mechanical systems procedure • Directional surface procedure • Sequence procedure • Starting and ending point procedure • Number of ortho-tracks • Style of the Haircut design (e.g., short, long, very long) • Hair categories, hair class, hair type • Measurements
