ESSENCE
The project focuses on a mixed-use development at 10th and Monroe Avenue intersection. The design explored a rich site with strong circulatory forces.
The duality between the beltline and context is given a poetic connection with the programmatic proposal of a large-scale dance studio - including artist residency. This decision was informed by how cars and pedestrians seemingly dance along every edge of the site’s perimeter. The notion here is further developed through translucent material - allowing for a visual experience viewing from the outside. The blurred silhouettes of dancers can be seen, but with the details of the dancers blurred - the art is distilled to it’s purest form.

The sculptural form model considers key site factors to amend the divide between pedestrian and vehicular traffic Atlanta is currently facing.
The large breezeway is carved to establish a deeper connection from the beltline to the surroundings.
Secondly, the dance hall cantilevers and extends to the higher topography with a bridge - again considering the circulation in and around the site. - The cantilever of the dance hall also carves out an exterior performance space that engages with the pedestrian traffic, giving way to moments in time that bring people into the site. Its visibility to the higher topography lures people from Virginia Ave to experience the ramp alongside the retaining wall - in a moment where their circulation becomes a secondary performance.
The separated volumes set the opportunity for rooftop activities - namely, with the project’s retail portion.
