P AT R I C K S T E P H E N

Hello. M y n a m e i s Pa t r i c k Stephen I am a 3rd year student at the University of Waterloo School of Architecture. I have always been fascinated with stories for their capacity to communicate ideas and inspire action. They exist in any image, any craft, and every person who walks through architecture. A story, at its root, begins with questioning what came before, what happens now, and what will happen next. They inform how we might design and inturn, how we might live. In this portfolio you will find various mediums of exploration. While my passion for film and photography naturally coincides with telling stories, the idea of questioning (intrinsic to storytelling) has impacted the way I see design. In both my academic and professional carear, it is this perspective that has driven me to constantly grow as an artist and designer; to question the way things are, and how we might impact the future. ASCENSION Ascension is a journey through three distinct environments. These environments are intersected by columns of light which act as both commodity and inspiration for the city structure. Unlike cities of earth which rise towards the sun, this city must cling to the light which is provided. These vertical pillars naturally invoke a sense of gravity, reflecting the draw of the underground city and the climb one must make to reach the city of light. year | 2017 term | 2a project | design / installation

LIBRARY 789 Although named from its street address (789 St Claire Ave), the name of this library also invokes an aura of production and evolution. It is this idea which drives the design for LIBRARY 789. At the center is a LEARNING CORE which houses the knowledge and resources for the library. Adjacent to the core is the Maker’s Lab, a space where individual learning informs practical applications. These two spaces create a cyclical integration of practice and study. year | 2017 term | 1b project | design

THE VESSEL This installation examines the pairing of an animal instinct (the frog) and a symbol (the vessel). Frogs inherently embody transformation, whether that be a biological metamorphosis from tadpole to frog, or a personal journey through which the frog symbolically acts as a “guide. When one considers the vessel and its connotation to journey and transportation, an image of experience begins to form. year | 2019 term | 3b project | installation

THE VESSEL brings these elements of transformation together through sound a light, transporting the user beyond the immediacies of our physical bodies. Although the “vessel” is object itself, this installation is less about the physical as it is about ritual and experience, for both the user and the outside observer.

RENDERING Rendering and visualization has fascinated me because of its ability to create that which does not or cannot exist. As a medium, it allows the exploration of ideas beyond what is possible, to propose or suggest a new way of thinking or living. Personally, I still have a great deal to learn in regards to the technique and application of rendering. However, the idea of infinite possibilities has often been a source of inspiration to explore and experiment with new software, technique or stories.

PROFESSIONAL WORK In my professional career I have worked on projects involving schematic design and visualization. These two projects above each presented unique challenges. From landscape and aesthetic design, to modelling and rendering, I have had the opportunity to work on commercial, institutional and residential scale projects; creating drawings, layouts and visualizations that the end client has used for promotion, fundraising and construction. year | 2018

YO U N G P E O P L E S T H E AT R E | TO R O N TO O N The Young People’s Theatre is one such project allowed me to take on several roles. While assisting in the initial building massing and modelling, I also created rendered views of the project, showing interior, street views, and entrance details.

WARM Warm explores the idea of enlightenment in modern society through the protagonist of “Andrew”. On what would otherwise have been a normal evening, a strange voice in Andrew’s head challenges his perception of what is real and what is illusion. As a viewer, we can observe the character’s transformation as their understanding of the world undergoes a paradigm shift. year | 2018

37

DESOLATE Desolate is an exploration of storytelling through animation and camera movement. This rendered environment is viewed by a single continuous shot allowing the scene to unfold in real time. As the camera moves, it reveals new information and context for the story. As such, the viewer must constantly re-evaluate the perceived events and their understanding of this world. year | 2019

PHOTOGR APHY Although sharing many characteristics with film, photography captures another part of the mind which film sometimes neglects, imagination. The photographic process (both digital and chemical) has been very important in developing my creative process. Through photography I learned to push boundaries and capabilities, to observe the work I make and the world around me through a new lens. Hasselblad | 503cx

Even if my camera had no film in it (or my digital camera had no memory) I might still go through the ACT of photography. A captured image is just a product of the creative process, documentation of a certain observation or idea. To go through the process of framing and composition but not record an image, to me, is not a process cut short. Do I need a camera at all to see the world in a framed view? To look and observe, to see with new perspectives and‌ take a mental note: A photograph that only I will know.
