GRAPHIC DESIGN P A T R I C K

K O T O W S K I

I N F O G R A P H I C S R E S E A R C H To make simple charts, graphs and diagrams look attractive, the solution is to create a graphic design piece. But true infographics aim to explain more complex concepts, and in a visual, easily scannable and digestible form. They resonate with our visual communication culture, and their visual nature helps overcome literacy and language barriers. An infographic should tell a story. It could portray: the interrelationships in time or space among elements of a concept; a flowchart of a process; a visual timeline, for example tracing the evolution of a concept or industry.

This is a sport infographic for the summary of a college football game to inform fans, the media and the public in general, the most important facts of the game that they may have missed or want to recap.

The infographic is clearly representing the Oregon Ducks as their logo and team information are all over the page, while also displaying them as neon yellow as oppose to the dull grey which represents the opposition. This shows that the ‘Ducks’ are the ones being represented in this poster as they have more of a ‘spotlight’ than the other team.

I like how the top half of the poster is designed as it looks clean, simple yet effective however, I believe the text (body) font can be displayed better, by using a more attractive style of font.

Furthermore, I like how the ‘points scored in each quarter’ is represented by a unique number line to show the difference in scoring between each team. The designer(s) of this infographic seem to enjoy representing information in lines/ blocks as they display both the ‘Total Yards’, ‘Passing’ and ‘Rushing’ for each team in that style.

This infographic also keeps its consistency in the colour scheme to make it look, once again, clean and professional as it is important they are representing this team in that manner.

Their unique piece is including ‘The Fan of the Game’ tweet, which is something I have never seen before and maybe something I could include in my project.

The infographic concludes with the team’s logo, their motto, and their website followed by their social media, which in my eyes, should always be visible in this type of art especially in this day and age; I will keep that in mind if I ever decide to choose this theme as my main project.

AS ASSESSMENT GRID

MARK SCHEME SOLAR SYSTEM EDITION

I chose to represent the AS Assessment Grid Mark Scheme for my subject, Graphic Design, in a Solar System style purely out of imagination as it was really the only idea I had thought of, that nobody else was doing. At first, I thought of representing the mark scheme as the earth’s ozone layers, however that idea grew old and so I decided to use some of the solar system as I was creating my geometric Planet Earth. The finish of the earth inspired me to create more planets so that’s where the idea originally came from.

This mark scheme was created to display to anybody a simpler version so that others could understand the aims and development of reaching certain grades in the Graphic Design course. I believe I did a good job of designing an attractive poster however, it might be less obvious to the viewer where to look in order to see the order in which the individual AO’s correspond to. For example, it’s not obvious that the viewer HAS to look at Mercury to start the process of looking at the development of marks.

In addition to typing in the vague information for each AO, I decided to create poster for every planet to display further information for the AO just incase the viewer wants to see the fine details. Furthermore, I concentrated on keeping each poster consistent to each other in terms of the layout, text and background. Although I kept consistency in the background, size of the planet and font, I failed to co-ordinate the text and planets in the same position on the page. This makes it look less professional but now I know that I need to calculate, using X and Y co-ordinates, where to put the text and image in order to maintain consistency within my designs. In order to create the planets, I drew a perfect circle, set the opacity to around 30%, created a new layer for the outline and used the pen tool to draw an un-even circle (on purpose) to create a geometric-style planet. I then took a real life image of each planet and used the eye-dropper tool to set each triangle its colour. Some people might view this as cheating but I just see it as a way of working around.

K U C Z Y N S K I Pawel Kuczynski is a Polish artist that specialises in satirical illustration. Born in 1976 in Szczecin, Poland, he graduated with a graphics degree from the Fine Arts Academy in Poznan. Patel has been focusing on satire since 2004 and has garnered nearly a hundred prizes and distinctions since then.

Much of his artwork deals with serious themes such as poverty, greed, politics and mortality. While his subject matter is stark, his illustrative style is whimsical and cartoonish. This provides great contrast and makes his work interesting to analyse.

Kuczynski’s work is clever in that it gets you thinking long before you know the significance behind his message. In that way it challenges us to re-examine our preconceived notions - or even the notions we ignore - giving us a chance to reassess our thinking. He considers himself an observer of people and their relationships. This exceptional artist travels around the and finds pleasure in meeting interesting people.

According the Kuczynski, war, poverty, hunger, racial discriminations, ecology, money are as immortal and timeless as art, and that’s why he addresses these issues in his artwork. In addition, he uses satire and black humour, which reflect the sad reality we live in. Deeply influenced by Caravaggio and other baroque painters, he uses light in a similar way to them. Pastel colours, simple shapes and forms give his artwork a timeless look.

Pawel Kuczynski poses important questions about the present and the future of the world, but, most importantly, about whether we are able to deal with these questions. With his thought-provoking artwork and ongoing projects, this brilliant artist will always make us question our everyday lives.

K A W S Brian Donnelly is currently best known as the artist, KAWS. KAWS is a New York-based artist who has made a name out of him designing limited edition toys and clothing. He is a world-renowned artist who exhibits in museums and galleries internationally. His art stands somewhere between fine art and global commerce. KAWS moved beyond the sphere of the exclusive art market to occupy a more complex global market.

Most recently, KAWS has designed toys and clothing for well-known companies such as Original Fake, A Bathing Ape, Undercover, Kung Faux, Nike and Vans. In the early 2000s, he also reworked many familiar television and cartoon icons such as characters from The Simpsons, Mickey Mouse, the Michelin Man, the Surfs, and even Spongebob SquarePants.

Last year I managed to witness KAWS’ work at Yorkshire Sculpture Park, a college trip. There were paintings similar to ones shown to the left and his most popular, statues of Mickey Mouse. This is where he has been highly praised for his work, on acrylic paintings and large sculptures. One of the more popular KAWS sculpture is that of a grey scale figure based on the Mickey Mouse whose face is obscured by his both hands.

L E E In these colourful illustrations, Lee Juyong, illustrator from Seoul, Republic of Korea, shows us a view of the modern life. Lee Juyong takes his illustrated characters through different worlds. Below the world of work, money and competition. This perfectly depicts Eastern Asia as the increase in competition and work skyrockets due to high demand in the enormous population.

Lee has a unique, comic-style illustration while also consistently using dark blue colours and also bright neon yellows and pinks to make the image really stand out. Lee also displays a similar concept of his illustrations to Pawel Kuczynski, where they are trying to send an important message about todays world problems. This is something I want to incorporate into my work and hopefully display it in my final piece, but of course, I would need to tell my own story of something these artists have not done before; I will show my ideas in the ‘initial ideas’ page.

His pieces have a lot of depth as it seems the vanishing point seems to go on forever; there’s always something in the background with quite a lot of detail. There are a lot of objects / subjects you need to look at in order to completely understand the whole image because everything connects together. bechance.net/juyong

J U Y O N G

L E E J U Y O N G I M A G E A N A LY S I S I love this piece, ‘work or life’, by one of my favourite artists at the moment, Lee Juyong, because of his old-school, retro, neon, comic-style illustrations that not many do at the moment. I particularly like how he laid it all out and the colour scheme used to create the moody atmosphere that he intended to do. Furthermore, he highlights the key objects that he wants to get across to the viewer so that the intention of the illustration is reached and understood. Vibrant colours come alive to send a message and create a bold contrast between cold and warm. Lastly, I like how throughout his pieces, he keep the designs consistent in terms of how objects, people and animals look.

This can influence my work in a way so that I can represent ‘ever-day problems’ which can tie in with my main theme, Digital Dreams, in the illustration style of Lee Juyong. I could take inspiration from his use of the blue tone colour scheme to create this idea of depression and also use the idea of using a couple of bold colours to make them stand out to send the main message. I don’t have to create huge pieces that are shown in the previous slide, I can create ones like the size of this to get my message across; it’s not necessary to aim too far.

As I stated before, I really like the use of colour in this piece as the shades of blue depict the moody atmosphere Lee is trying to represent but to also highlight key objects / areas that he wants to point out such as the text ‘LIFE’ and the pieces on the floor; I don't believe he could have used a better colour scheme to create this atmosphere. As a result this concept creates high contrast in some areas while also keeping consistency in others. For example, most of the room has the same tone apart from the poster, the objects on the floor and the sunlight reflection on the character’s face and the dog.

There is one problem I have with the image, and that is the alignment and position of the text on the wall; it is slightly out of position and tilt which doesn’t look right, in my opinion. The use of text is not parallel to the end of the poster or the wall. On the one hand, I believe the size / scale of everything in the image is perfect and nothing is really out of proportion. The types of shapes used are mostly 3D to create a sense of depth into the image and to create a semirealistic piece. This is the style he has kept throughout his work to show consistency and to create his own unique selling point.

I haven’t managed to find out anything whatsoever about this piece or his technique, but using my knowledge and experience, I can say that he has create a digital piece ‘free-hand’. This is because you can carefully see that the vertical lines are not perfect and it can be argued that this makes it look not clean and un-professional, but I just believe it’s Lee Juyong’s style and this is what sets him apart from other artists in the industry. Lee probably sketched the basics of each area and then gradually built everything into detail; this is something I can look up to and use for my ideas so that I can be successful in my final piece.

This artist has positioned everything well to create a good composition so that it is neither too congested or too basic. The focal point is clearly in the middle where the character is sat on the bed, the dog on the floor with the ‘objects’ and the poster above the man. The movement of the overall image flows in the vertical direction because of it’s 3-D shapes going upwards; the image is also neither too stale nor too quick. The lines and strokes used are straight and quite thin to create somewhat of a clean illustration while also not being to plain.

Lee Juyong has used negative space very well because the black is clearly used as shadows and borders of objects to finish the image and use as a frame. I don;t really understand the meaning very well but I will soon, I hope…

I N T E N T

My idea for this project is to create a satirical illustration (digital art) in the style similar to artists such as Pawel Kuczynski’s, KAWS’ or Lee Juyong’s; maybe a combination of all. I intend to cover area(s) in our society today that is controversial and make the viewer think twice about their actions and thinking while also covering the main theme, which is ‘digital dreams’. It’s quite complicated because my idea also ties into the theme of ‘society today’ so I thought of joining the two together to create ‘Society Today and Digital Dreams’ as my new theme. ‘Society Today’ does connect with my main idea because it represents what the world is right now which is mostly on the negative side. Digital Dreams can be represented in many ways because it can reach a vast audience and it doesn’t necessarily mean that the graphics need to be done digitally because it can be displayed using traditional materials. However, I believe it’d be better to represent the theme digitally purely on preference. I’ve always used traditional materials and I want to work on my digital art techniques to improve. However, I will be sketching initial ideas and concepts on paper (traditional) because I feel more comfortable using that technique and then I would upload the sketches to the computer and then draw over them with the tablet. This means I’ll be using a combination of techniques to show my talent and and development in this project to create my final, satirical piece. However, I want to create a realistic piece that won’t take too much time because of my lack of working quick, especially when it comes to creating art. I like to take my time so that I don’t create mistakes and have to step backwards and not progress. I don’t think it needs to be that big in order to send a message, like I want to. I won’t be getting source material because there is no need to because of the intentions of my project but just in case, if things were to change, I would probably read articles about a certain illustration, artist and possibly watch a video on Youtube on how to draw something specifically. For example, if there was a body part, object or something that I would not know how draw correctly. In terms of what I want to achieve in the end, I would like to create a final piece with a selfconscious illustration that makes the viewer re-think about their actions and thinking in todays world problems such as poverty, wealth, political, etc.
