GRAPHIC DESIGN P A T R I C K

I N F O G R A P H I C S R E S E A R C H To make simple charts, graphs and diagrams look attractive, the solution is to create a graphic design piece. But true infographics aim to explain more complex concepts, and in a visual, easily scannable and digestible form. They resonate with our visual communication culture, and their visual nature helps overcome literacy and language barriers. An infographic should tell a story. It could portray: the interrelationships in time or space among elements of a concept; a flowchart of a process; a visual timeline, for example tracing the evolution of a concept or industry.

CLOTHES/LIFESTYLE

This is a sport infographic for the summary of a college football game to inform fans, the media and the public in general, the most important facts of the game that they may have missed or want to recap.

The infographic is clearly representing the Oregon Ducks as their logo and team information are all over the page, while also displaying them as neon yellow as oppose to the dull grey which represents the opposition. This shows that the ‘Ducks’ are the ones being represented in this poster as they have more of a ‘spotlight’ than the other team.

I like how the top half of the poster is designed as it looks clean, simple yet effective however, I believe the text (body) font can be displayed better, by using a more attractive style of font.

Furthermore, I like how the ‘points scored in each quarter’ is represented by a unique number line to show the difference in scoring between each team. The designer(s) of this infographic seem to enjoy representing information in lines/ blocks as they display both the ‘Total Yards’, ‘Passing’ and ‘Rushing’ for each team in that style.

This infographic also keeps its consistency in the colour scheme to make it look, once again, clean and professional as it is important they are representing this team in that manner.

Their unique piece is including ‘The Fan of the Game’ tweet, which is something I have never seen before and maybe something I could include in my project.

The infographic concludes with the team’s logo, their motto, and their website followed by their social media, which in my eyes, should always be visible in this type of art especially in this day and age; I will keep that in mind if I ever decide to choose this theme as my main project.

AS ASSESSMENT GRID

MARK SCHEME SOLAR SYSTEM EDITION

I chose to represent the AS Assessment Grid Mark Scheme for my subject, Graphic Design, in a Solar System style purely out of imagination as it was really the only idea I had thought of, that nobody else was doing. At first, I thought of representing the mark scheme as the earth’s ozone layers, however that idea grew old and so I decided to use some of the solar system as I was creating my geometric Planet Earth. The finish of the earth inspired me to create more planets so that’s where the idea originally came from.

This mark scheme was created to display to anybody a simpler version so that others could understand the aims and development of reaching certain grades in the Graphic Design course. I believe I did a good job of designing an attractive poster however, it might be less obvious to the viewer where to look in order to see the order in which the individual AO’s correspond to. For example, it’s not obvious that the viewer HAS to look at Mercury to start the process of looking at the development of marks.

In addition to typing in the vague information for each AO, I decided to create poster for every planet to display further information for the AO just incase the viewer wants to see the fine details. Furthermore, I concentrated on keeping each poster consistent to each other in terms of the layout, text and background. Although I kept consistency in the background, size of the planet and font, I failed to co-ordinate the text and planets in the same position on the page. This makes it look less professional but now I know that I need to calculate, using X and Y co-ordinates, where to put the text and image in order to maintain consistency within my designs. In order to create the planets, I drew a perfect circle, set the opacity to around 30%, created a new layer for the outline and used the pen tool to draw an un-even circle (on purpose) to create a geometric-style planet. I then took a real life image of each planet and used the eye-dropper tool to set each triangle its colour. Some people might view this as cheating but I just see it as a way of working around.

K U C Z Y N S K I Pawel Kuczynski is a Polish artist that specialises in satirical illustration. Born in 1976 in Szczecin, Poland, he graduated with a graphics degree from the Fine Arts Academy in Poznan. Patel has been focusing on satire since 2004 and has garnered nearly a hundred prizes and distinctions since then.

Much of his artwork deals with serious themes such as poverty, greed, politics and mortality. While his subject matter is stark, his illustrative style is whimsical and cartoonish. This provides great contrast and makes his work interesting to analyse.

Kuczynski’s work is clever in that it gets you thinking long before you know the significance behind his message. In that way it challenges us to re-examine our preconceived notions - or even the notions we ignore - giving us a chance to reassess our thinking. He considers himself an observer of people
